View Full Version : Plastic zip ties no match for wonder squirrel !!

I got the Henry's cage with 7 doors for feeding.
I read that one could zip tie them with plastic zip ties.
They are sure not lasting long, takes just minutes for one to DISAPPEAR.
I think it is Houdini, but it could be General Forrest! (it is)
Soo any advice? I'd like to keep them in the cage.
I am afraid he will chew through bread ties too!

All joking aside if you want to secure something it has to be chew proof.
I recommend getting snap clips (like the ones you have on the end of a dog leash).

Just went through this (I did know better, but thought were I put them, she could not reach them.) Here is what IR posted (I actually do use this, but was out so did the zip ties. Not an excuse.)

Works great, wire cutters and you can cut whatever size you need and you can put them on and take them off and reuse the pieces, too.

I used the ones for construction.. the super heavy duty ones that you use to fix car hoses and what not.... or electrical work or whatever...
they just disappear in the nite.. never to be seen again.... little devil!

Hot glue them in? Come on... Really? Sometimes we need to take a few seconds to think before we post thats all. No harm intended on my part, I said I was joking because I had like a million thoughts in my head.
Just remember, plastic is no match for squirrel teeth! Geeze, sometimes I think they could bite through steel! :D

I've put up walls with hot glue gun.. Walls!
oh I loves my hot glue gun.
maybe I should just solder them shut with my trusty soldering gun... would that work?
it will be a couple weeks before I go into town again for supplies. My mule team is feeling poorly

I used little metal clips on my Henry's door. I loved all the doors so I could put my hand in without Simon getting out, made escape harder....but it wasn't a good cage for him, he needed horizontal bars not vertical. His poor little mangled legs got stuck too much.

squirrel see, squirrel do... ya know? lol
this is first time I've ever had a squirrel that could see.

Lowes will have the clips....... but please know that you will need a special tool to put them on with.
The sales person will be able to help you at the store.

You can order them online and have them delivered. The wire works really well, not just for the cage, either.

I don't know what the latches look like on this cage but if you have a lot of key chains the metal loop might work well.

Been there - done that! Yep small dog clips from your Menards work great. If you want to keep closed forever - local farm stores have these great clips for making bunny hutches - little metal pieces that you close with a pliers - I keep a bag handy.

I've used all kinds of weird things. Paper clips, random wire, tiny C-toggles, S hooks, the little clip for fishing lures, zip-ties (which as you found got chewed through), tiny bungees, etc.
Whatever you come up with just remember that if it ends with a point, make sure that point faces AWAY from the cage unless you can file it, bend it back, or rubber coat it (which they'll eat it they can reach it).
