I don't use it in my sq cages, but alot of members do and alot more use it in make shift litterboxes...yes, some sqs are potty trained...
so they say!

of course you will have to remove it if you see them eating it..
not the norm, but it has happened.
can cause blockage I would think.

I use it in my rabbits litterbox and it works well as far as odors!:thumbsup

Thanks Jackie:thankyou My Squirt pees like an elephant sometimes..lol:rotfl Right now i use fleece lining and towels at the bottom of the cage and im changing it 2x a day, then i heard about this stuff and not having to change it more than once a day. The one good thing is is that he doesnt peepee on the fleece only on the towels but his nails are getting sharper everyday and i dont want him to get stuck on towel threads. It hasnt been a problem yet but i dont want it to be either.

Carefresh all natural unscented, I use it, works great! Absorbs really well, lasts a long time, never an odor problem. :thumbsup

Oh one more question. What type of bedding is this? Is it wood chips or fluffy stuff?

Manufacturer: CAREFRESH

Free from dust and contaminants like pine or cedar oil, so its safe for your small pet.
Provides a more natural living environment. Keep your home smelling cleaner! Carefresh Basic provides better absorption and odor control compared to traditional woodshaving bedding. Traditional bedding may also irritate your small pet's sensitive skin with pine or cedar oils. Made of select soft woods and reclaimed virgin cellulose, Carefresh Basic is less likely to irritate your pet's skin.

I couldn't/wouldn't rehab without it. When you've got 10+ squirrels in a small apartment, and you're eating within 5 feet of the cages, ODOR is a big issue. This stuff is wonderful.

i forgot to mention something. How do i prevent it from falling through the bottom of the cage into the pullout tray? or do i prevent it at all? lay something down first?

I adore carefresh.

Got the idea from IR. I place the carefresh in any kind of box. My babies (age 8 weeks) love it in large empty tissue boxes. You can use coke 12 pk boxes cut in half length wise. I use any kind of box they can fit in.
All of kids potty in it. The carefresh inside the box is soaked at the end of the day and I pitch.
You can also lay the carefresh in the bottom of a cardboard flat used to carry 6 packs of soda? They hop in and use. Saves on them laying in wet blankets all day.

You don't need too much of it either. A little goes a long way. It is amazing stuff. I should make a comercial:wott

I put it in a box in the bottom shelf of Sammy's cage. He uses it as a potty box even though it was intended as a dig box...lol

So i dont line the whole bottom of the cage with it?? Wow good thing i asked otherwise my Squirt would be bathing in it 24/7..lol...do i still line the bottom of the cage with fleece and towels or can i take those out? i heard that its not good for the squirrels feet to be on the wire all the time?

My Richard loves his blankets in the bottom of his cage. I got a triangular plastic container that hooks on the corner of the cage for his carefresh potty. It only takes two to three small handfuls of carefresh in the corner container. I change his potty carefresh about every three days. The rest of the cage bottom is fleece. Richard is my two year old NR.
He NEVER pees on his blankets, only in his carefresh potty. Nice.
I use disposable cardboard for my three eight week old babies on daily FV.:wave123

Right now i have one side lined with white towels and the other side has his fleece. He always pees on the towels and not on the fleece. i did see those corner containers for ferrets but wasnt sure if it would work with squirrels. thanks for the info:D

Ok so I just got the cagefresh in the mail today. I put some in a tissue box and put it in Squirts cage. He seems to be eating it, well chewing on it then spitting it out(I hope). What happens if he eats it?

Havent used carefresh but organic kitty litter in a little sandwich container... he pees in it great and has cut down the odor MAJOR. He tried to eat it at first but quit after a day, didn't hurt him

Do not worry, all of mine have eaten it at one time or another. I have never encountered any problems.
Just make sure if they are old enough to use the care fresh they are old enough to have block of some kind in their cage and they will decide to eat that instead.
Not sure how old your baby is, but even an almond in the shell or a good tiny branch will give them something to chew on.
I had one baby in a group of triplets last year that ate carefresh all of the time and did not have any problems. The other siblings chewed on newspaper which I believe is about the same difference.:wave123
Of course if it is eaten continually maybe you should hold off on using it until they are a little bigger. This last group of mine ate the carefresh for only a couple of days until they realized it was not the good stuff and I haven't seen them eat it since.

My Squirt is 11 weeks old. I just noticed this morning that he pooped in the tissue box with the carefresh..Yay:wahoo He didnt pee in it though, at least not yet. He seems to play with it and i dont think he's eating it now.

I toss mine in on the wire over the whole cage bottom, it works it way to the bottom tray, but does keep little feet off the wire. Had the same problem of it dropping out on the floor so I am making little elastic cage skirts to keep it inside. Of course I am dealing with mostly flyers who don't nipple(chew) on everything in sight! Love that Carefresh!

Sammy and Peanut will use the corner litter in their cage and we use the Carefresh.

When they were introduced to their new cage (which has 4 levels with plastic shelf's) We kept track of where they were peeing, once that was established we would wipe up the pee with a paper towel and place it under the Carefresh. It took a few days for them to get use to the newly placed corner litter box (see picture below, upper right hand corner), so if they did pee just outside of the litter box we would continue to wipe it up and place it under the Carefresh.

Now they both pee inside the litter box, it didn't take that long and wasn't hard to do and it made a better environment for them.

Now if we could just get them to flush the toilet when they poo.... (just a joke) they poo everywhere in the cage. :peace

Yay he will start peeing in it too. As you said with Squirt, usually the nibbling of carefresh does not last long. They figure out real quick it is not food.
Like Anne says, I love care my carefresh.
It really doesn't take much either. It fluffs up very well and absorbs urine for quite a while.
Thanks for posting the progress:wave123 Hi Squirt:wave123

Thanks everyone. I may try the trick of wiping up the pee with a tissue and putting it under the carefresh if he doesnt start to pee in it. It was nice to wake up today and not see chocolate presents scattered all over the cage:rotfl
