View Full Version : MILA NEEDS HELP AGAIN :(

Our sweet Mila is having a very rough time out there it seems. After being re-released only days ago she is now back in her release cage - came back to it of her own volition - and today she didn't want to leave the cage. She stayed in her nest most of the day but, when she did come out - to drink, she seemed VERY thirsty - I noticed that her left eye is all puffy. The upper eyelid is all swollen and her eye looks dull.
Now what do we do? I can't see any hole, she barely lets me look at her, hiding in her nest box all the time, but that eyelid is really very puffy. She certainly cannot see well out of that eye right now. I'm guessing she'll need antibiotics again, but the question is, what kind?
Sorry for the fuzzy pics but those are the best I could snap with my son's small cam. In the 1st pic you can see how much smaller than the right her left eye is.

She might just need some eye ointment for the eye....... maybe she scratched it while out there jumping from limb to to limb. Try and get a better look at it and see --do you think she will let you put some drops or cream in the eye?

She will let me do this.
What kind of cream?

I have some Polysporin eye & ear drops, which my vet had prescribed for my cat's conjunctivitis. No prescription needed for it however.
I'm more concerned that it may be with the eyelid itself... Like a stye, or some infection starting & turning into an abscess as the result of a scratch/fight.
Poor little girl sure is not lucky :(

That would probably still work..... as I was thinking some thing like Terramycin Antibiotic Ointment.
I keep this on hand:

Sounds good too... and same number of times to administer: 2 drops 4 times a day for the eye drops. Probably less likely to try and rub it off though since those are drops. :dono

I have the "Fucithalmic Vet Eye Gel".
Active ingredient: Fusidic acid 10mg/g
Fusidic acid, the active component of Fucithalmic® Vet Eye Gel, exerts antibacterial action by interfering with bacterial protein synthesis. Fusidic acid exhibits in vitro activity against a number of Gram-positive and Gram-negative cocci. Almost all strains of Staphylococci including penicillinase-producing strains, demonstrate in vitro sensitivity to fusidic acid. Staphylococcus aureus and in particular, Staphylococcus intermedius, which are responsible for the majority of external eye infections in dogs and humans, are both sensitive to fusidic acid in vitro. The slow-release formulation of Fucithalmic® Vet Eye Gel results in prolonged retention within the conjunctival sac. Thus a single application provides inhibitory levels of fusidic acid against sensitive organisms over a period of 24 hours.
Dosage And Administration
Instill one drop into the eye once or twice a day. Continue treatment for 48 hours after the eye has returned to normal. If the dog has one infected eye, it may be advisable to treat both eyes to prevent cross infection. In such cases it is better to treat the uninfected eye first in order to avoid transferring infection via the tube nozzle. If a clinical response is not evident within 5 days, the diagnosis should be re-established by the treating veterinarian. Prior to administration, pus and debris should be removed from the corners and surroundings of the eye with a piece of cotton wool moistened with warm water or a ready made eye lotion. The dog should be appropriately restrained with the head held firmly in a slightly raised position. Pull the lower eyelid down, instill 1 drop of Fucithalmic® Vet Eye Gel into the lower conjunctival sac, and then release the eyelid.

News of Mila this morning are not good. Her whole head is swollen now, and because of the swelling even her right eye is slightly smaller today. There appears to be a bump at the back of her head. Also yesterday I noticed her cute upturned nose - I had never noticed that before - like a little ski jump kind of nose some juvies have, but today the bridge of her nose is all swollen... along with the rest of her head. Even her jaw line is all puffy.
Clearly something is very wrong here and I'm pretty sure she needs ABs... question is, what kind and how much? HELP PLEASE!!!
Again the pics are not great but here they are:

Does she have any discharge from her nose? If so, wipe it and see if you can detect an odor.
I am wondering if this is more fall related. Can you feel the back of her head? I just wondered if it felt like fluid is in there.
Poor baby.
Can you handle her, can you bring her inside?
I think she needs lots of TLC.
Baytril seems to be the ab of choice. :dono
Could she have some how fallen and injured her teeth, or punctured the roof of her mouth?
Would that account for this type of swelling......just throwing things out there.

I agree -- if there is some type of infection going on in there, and most likely there is, the Big Dog is needed to knock it out. You may even need to 'stack' ABX, like Baytril and Sulfatrim, or chloro........poor Mila!

Thanks for moving this here.
There does not seem to be any injury to her mouth - she grabbed a nut and ate it this morning. Iwonka cannot make it here this morning but she is coming to pick her up this afternoon and will take her home so she can treat her. For the moment the poor baby's in her release cage, inside her nest box and she doesn't want to come out of it. At least it's soft and warm in there.
Going to check on her every hour until Iwonka gets here.

No discharge from her nose, her teeth seem fine. She is swollen under the jaw but we can't pinpoint any hole there. However, there seems to be a little hole behind her ear and on the other side of her head. Iwonka wonders if there's a chance it might be a sting or insect bites that could have caused the swelling. The chances might be slim but we figure better to ask.
We thought maybe to administer Benadryl, in case it is, but we wonder what the dosage would be and how long would it take for the swelling to go down IF it is a sting or insect bite.
Would it be OK to administer the ABs along with the Benadryl or should we wait before administering the ABs?

I did see a very small scratch on that left eye. Hard to see.
The small hole is behind that ear that had the puss in it... JMO but I'm thinking the whole is narrow but was deep and the infection is coming from there into her ear and that whatever it is, there definitely is infection now and she needs the ABx. Usually a bite will swell much quicker than this did - yesterday the swelling was not nearly as bad. It was just her eye... today it's her whole head, kinda like an infection that spreads under the skin of her head. Again JMO...

:thumbsup She's back at home, indoors at Iwonka's again, has started her ABx, yes - Iwonka's doing the same kind of protocol she did for Elli, if I'm not mistaken. She is also flushing the wound to make sure to keep it clean and draining. I do think that the hole being so close to the ear, the abscess has spread into her ear and it is pus we see there.
Poor baby, if not for rotten luck she'd have no luck at all :(

The liquid you see might be dried blood mixed with pus, and if you can flush that much liquid in the wound then it could be because part of it goes into her ear. That hole is awfully close to her ear... which would explain the mess you found inside her ear yesterday.

If the abcesses are gone and no more have popped up for some time, it shouldn't be an issue (unless it is a large area, then might want to give some time for regrowth.) But with a new spot, this could go on for a bit. Abcesses can be very tough to completely heal and get rid of. The poison in them lives under the skin and can pop up randomly. Are you piggie backing abs?

She was one week on Baytril and now Amoxi for 5 days already.

copying this from the wild mammal babies book:
Clip the fur around the wound. Lance if necessary. the wound needs to be open to drain. If the opening closes, another abcess pocket may form. Sometimes a Penrose drain is necessary to keep the wound open. Flush the wound with Novasan flush or Chlorhexiderm flush or a dilute solution of
Betadine and warm water (the color of weak tea). Use the antiseptic solutions for the initial cleaning. If wound need to be flushed daily, use warm water or normal saline solution. Abcesses contain anerobic bacteria. Hydrogen peroxide can be syringed into abcessed wounds; the oxygen released from the hydrogen peroxide help kill anerobic bacteria and will also flush out dead material. Rinse out the hydrogen peroxide with normal saline solution. Repeated us of antiseptic solutions may delay healing. Debride (remove) any dead tissue surrounding the abcess. The tissue may be block or dark-colored, scabby or yellow and dry. It can be cut away using clean scissors that have been disinfected. Removing the dead tissue also creates clean edges which facilitate healing. Healthy tissue will be pink. You may only need to scrub away dead pieces of skin. The wound may bleed a little. This is OK and means you are doing a good job. Apply an antibiotic cream that is water-soluable (avoid ointments). Apply hot packs several times a day for 15-20 minutes. Hot packing is easy. Use hot water and soak a washcloth. Squeeze out the excess water and wrap the washcloth around the area until the washcloth cools. Repeat. This encourages wound drainage and softens the dead tissue. The cloth should be as warm as possible w/o burning the baby. Oral antibiotics are often needed to treat or prevent sepsis. If the animal does not show improvement after a few day on antibiotics, a culture of the wound may be needed to determine which bacteria are present and what medication(s) will be effective. Severe cases that do not improve should be seen by a vet who may need to open the wound and insert a Penrose or other type of drain.
Again, copied from the Wild Mammal Babies the first 48 hours and beyond, second edition.

Looks like you are doing good with the treatment. I would continue on the Ab's for a few more days. Bite wound abscesses can take a while to resolve. As long as the wounds have healed you should be able to release her again, even though the fur on her head hasn't regrown, it will grow back quickly if she is strong and healthy otherwise. Do you feed a source of Omega 3 Fatty Acids like Flax seed? That is a good anti inflammatory and helps with healing. When you are flushing bite wounds, you can used diluted Betadine flushes until the infection is cleared up. Just add Betadine to warm water until the solution is the color of iced tea. It won't be too irritating to the tissues and will help kill the bacteria. The infected tissues are going to slough off and will be replaced anyway. Sorry I haven't been responding to very many posts, but my horse had colic surgery a few weeks ago, and I have been having to hand walk him every few hours and try to get some sleep and take care of the 8 cats, dog, other two horses, squirrel and the rest of the household as well.

I washed the wound with the watered betadine once I brought Mila home. After this I used a salty water only.
As the wound is all open now, I think I will use the Derma Gel. I had a good results with Eli's open wound.
FYI.
http://www.derma-gel.com/
Derma GeL® - Unrivaled Efficacy.
- Maintains a moist wound environment to prevent scab formation.
- Allows epithelial cells to migrate across the wound, multiply exponantially and enhance healing.
- Encourages wounds to heal from the sides as well as the bottom; increasing wound contraction rate.
- Allows for production of new epithelial cells that minimizes scarring and avoids hair discoloration.
- Does not harm the wound.
- Does not contain any mutagenic agents or steroids.
- Provides thermal insulation and a bacterial barrier (no bandage needed).
- Decreases pain and helps to lower inflammation.
- Speeds up the healing process.

Precious, precious baby. I do hope it is safe here out there for you. Ièm beginning to wonder about that... with Hansel coming and going from the same general direction and now having vanished... with little Black Rip gone mysteriously too... I'm so damn scared there might be something or someone out there harming them.

Well... I don't know the more secure place for Mila now :sanp3
At least she is coming back to the cage when she is sick...

I know... it's not like we have other options :sanp3 All I can do is keep my eyes open to try and keep predators away - if that is what has happened to her.

From the look of it Lea would rather move inside my house in Hansel's cage: she's the one now who sits in the flower box at the dining room window begging every day :jump

She is doing great.. but the wound takes time to heal completely... it's badly situated ... the skin is moving and the wound gets reopen. The stiches would be a fast solution but I cannot and I don't want to do this. We going to wait.
The photo below is from this morning.. it looks wet from the polysporyn.

Could superglue work on a squirrel wound? My last surgery they glued me together.

10-16-2012, 03:24 PM
It will heal. Using anything to close it could very easily cause another pocket to form if anything is left in it. As long as she is not digging at it, it will heal. You can squirt saline it it to help continue to help it, and continue to put antibiotic ointment in it. It looks really good!
Now, I am thinking as Scooterzmom, too.

What is in the release area..? Woods or other homes ??
My yard is roughly one acre, halaf of which is wooded and that is where the release cages are. I have lotos and lots of squirrels around, including territorial little red ones. Beyond my yard there are neighbors. There are cats and dogs around but not usually IN my yard; I always thought or hoped that my yard was remote enough to be safe but there is one darn cat who does come around. I've been chasing him away with the water canon. :soapbox
This whole entire area (the town I mean) is quite wooded and we do have racoons and hawks too. It,s really hard to find a place without any predators whatsoever ... if it's not that, then you'll have hawks or owls... In other words, we have all kinds of things around and the area from which Mila preferred coming and going is very wooded; one where there are neighbors but also where I did hear racoons at one point. There is no easy way to find out what is out there really. :(
Iwonka: Mila is looking better and better. :Love_Icon She's on her way :Love_Icon

She's such a sweetheart... super gentle by nature. She'd be inside her nest and if I put my hand in, she would growl but did not bite. Now that momma Iwonka has poiled her silly I hope she's still as sweet when she comes back to auntie Mitch's. :D

Making sure she has a nice warm nest always ready in the release cage. That way, if she gets hurt she can still find a safe, warm spot to come to and auntie Miche can call momma Iwonka to the rescue. :D

Because you think I am not? :( :sanp3
I'm preparing a nest just for her.. isolated, in case she will sleep alone. Mitch allows to put it close to the house so maybe she will stay there for the winter.
Perhaps booballs and pecans will help to convince her :D

Our Mila was all snug in her nest last night - she must have been, I didn't see her leave it after Iwonka left. :D
I didn't see her late this afternoon among the usual crowd but I'm purty sure hubby must have seen her this morning; I haven't asked him yet. She's lucky to have the house she has: with the winds already picking up and the rain coming (all the tail end of Sandy who knows what it's going to be like out there. Many of the poor little wilds will see their dreys damaged, I'm sure. :(

Release is probably the most important aspect of rehabbing. If you don't have a good release spot, I honestly believe that most of what we do is for nothing.
They are at a disadvantage anyway from not having their mama, and to just place them out in a cage, open the door, and keep your fingers crossed doesn't work for me. They need a place to go back to if they are hurt, they need food to be given until they learn how to fend for themselves.
They rely on us, and you cannot just turn them loose, and never look back. I disagree that the role stops the moment of release, I think our role becomes even more important then.
Mila depends on you and I'm glad that she has you to watch over her.
Stay safe little one.:Love_Icon
