My little ones are starting to eat veggies now. I have been sticking to basic stuff but last night picked up some bok-choy. I have never eaten it myself so I don't know what part to give them. I would assume the leaves...can they eat the stem as well? :thinking

yes, they can have stems and leaves...
cut the stems in small sections as it has stringy stalks.
very healthy and my guys love it...:thumbsup

Florida squirrels have far more sophisticated taste buds, I think. I watched Jackie in Tampa lovingly cut up bok-choy for her babies a couple years ago at Squirrel Central, so first thing when I got home I tried some on mine......no takers. I'll keep trying, though! :dono

I've never been able to convince any of my guys to eat it either. I've stopped trying...tired of just throwing away money.

Thanks Jackie!! :)

IR and MM...that's what i'm afraid of too but I thought I would at least try it. Whatever they don't like I'll eat! Going to get them some broccoli and cauliflower too...I hate the stuff but maybe they will like it! :D

the only veggie that I offer and always throw away is zucchini..
they hate it!
but I have a large land tortoise that is not picky...eats what everyone else rejects...
my guys love kale too...
I seldom spring for big ticket veggies..
they love radicchio, but unless a case of 9 heads is $10 I don't buy it...
I shop wholesale bulk when I can.
it's $5 a head at the grocery store and the size of a softball..
doesn't go far when you are feeding alot of sqs..

I've asked every grocery store manager around here about radicchio and they look at me like I have 3 heads! So far, none has been able to locate it to buy it, or at least that's what I've been told. I still can't believe how limited our squirrel friendly veggies are:(

So...bok-choy is not a hit. They each picked up a tiny stem piece, put it in their mouth and dropped it about 2 seconds later. Guess I'll be eating it! :(

Honey loves endive, but it's pricey and hard to find. :tilt

Try leaving it in there for a while and see if they'll go back to it later. Miss Hope is too picky for her own good. She'll sample something new and toss it at me. I found that if I left it in her dish for a while she would go back when Momma wasn't supposed to be watching and nibble on it.

Thanks, I'll try that next time! They are napping so I cleaned it out. :)

I've gone hard-core this season. EVERYONE eats blocks, nomatter what. Mazuri and HHBs. Kale, chickory, acorn squash and sweet potato are their basics, besides block (and FV, those who aren't weaned yet). An almond or a chunk of apple as a treat. However, this season there are NO:
*sugar snap pea pods ($8/lb, lasts 2 days)
* endive $3.79/lb
* radicchio $4.79 each and half is usually rotten....

First off, they are all ridiculously expensive when you have 9 squirrels and soon to have 17. Secondly, I can only get them at certain stores at certain times and I am sick and tired of driving around (with $4.25/gal gas) to find this stuff! I swore last season, after the third store that did not have any pea pods left, that I would not let my fall babies ever know this stuff existed.....and they don't. :D

JAckie and IR, you guys are pretty lucky, Skeeter wont eat endive, or kale. I have tried sooo many times with Kale and Bok Choy. Actually anything leafy, she really just throws out of her bowl, very seldom goes back and eats or nibbles at it. I did try to smush some avocado on many leafy things, and she just licked it off. BRAT! :shakehead
I only have one, so I dont care what I spend on her if she is eating healthy. So yes, she does get the radicchio, but again, only bits she eats because it is leafy, oh, and good for her :rotfl Did I say BRAT!:Love_Icon

My boys get Acelgas ( Swiss Chard) its about $1.50 here in Costa Rica, but that is for only 2 or 3 pcs. I guess a "bunch" would be $10.00

My girls are very different, Minnie LOVES vegetables, zucchini and tomato are her favourites. Micky loves the sweet stuff, she always prefers bananas and mangos.
