Hello everyone! New here on the forum, long time animal lover. About 5 weeks ago we had a little grey join our family. She had fallen out of a very tall tree and had broken her back leg. From our best estimate she just had opened her eyes and her tail still skinny, making her about 5-6 weeks old. Her leg has healed now and for the last two weeks shes been getting around really well. She is very healthy and energetic, nice coat and bushy tail. My concerns are that her balance is still not all that great, but getting better every day and she does not make any sounds. Once or twice she has grunted, but other than that she is not vocal. I have successfully rehabbed and released squirrels in the past, but never had one soooo quiet. It is making me question if she is going to be releasable. She is such a sweety too, anyone have any info?

When she fell and broke her leg she might have damaged her vocal cords when she screamed. I have two cats that meow so softly you can barely hear them from that very thing. (one fell 50 feet from a tree and never meowed again after that hideous scream, and one got bit on the fanny from a bigger cat as a kitten and took a while to get his voice back) She lived for 5 years with that condition (she passed to cancer the vet couldn't treat) Give her time her vocal cords might heal.

I have a 3 year old male gray and I nicknamed him Marcel Marceau because he is a man of few words...

He grunted and purred only as a baby. He still purrs, and if I make him do something he doesn't want to do he will give me a little squeal, but nothing else. I have never heard him bark at other squirrels, alarm cry, or anything else. He is certainly capable - he just doesn't.

I think some of them just have less to say...

Thank you, that makes me feel better about prepping her for release. Just want to make sure she is going to be o.k. She found the toilet paper by her cage this morning and decided that it would go well in her "nest". She's been busy girl all morning - Too funny...:jump

My male only growls at his sister when she steals his food and never another peep. My female ALWAYS has something to say about everything she is the loudest mouthiest little thing I have ever seen:D

With ours it is very soft but you can feel it too. She does it when I scratch her under her arm or up near her face/ear is. She'll hold up her arm and start purring just like a kitten!

My Spicy make piggy-grunting purry sounds when she wants something and is happy to see you. She chitters when she sees an invisible monsters but rarely barks unless she's really upset. She also makes grunty "Eagh,Eagh!" when she's mad because she has a fav food and your in her space. Occasionally, I hear a random squeak but I don't know why she did it...maybe dreaming.

Skeeter is very quiet too. Never really makes a sound. She purrs every time I cuddle her, so cute, I cant stand it:Love_Icon . Little squeaks every now and again when I am checking her teeth, ears, etc. I actually hold her in one hand on her back, belly up and sometimes she loves it and sometimes she doesnt. Only once, she made a very loud sound, I actually thought it was a motorcycle revving down the street, nope, it was her. I never heard it again.

Our Missy started to make more sounds today - she must just be a late bloomer!

Don't know if this had anything to do w/ it - About three days ago I was messing w/ squirrel videos in where we keep her. Some of them really upset her (marked "cute squirrel sounds) actually it was angry mama sounds!) then I started "previewing" them w/ no sounds. The ones that were not angry or alarm sounds I let her hear. Then we had two full days of rain and one lazy girl. Today the sun was out and she was full of it!!! Even grabbed my sons mint Oreo (she's never grabbed people food before) and hauled butt w/ it! After 2-1/2 hours of non-stop squirrel antics she decided to perch herself on my pillow and "talk" to me!!! It was the cutest thing :Love_Icon - she was just tellin' me all about it w/ tail and even got on her back legs and used her little hands! She was making little grunts and chook-chook noises :multi I could just eat her up!

My first squirrel would "sing" a long loud call, it was pretty cool, but he didn't do it much.

I wonder what he was saying? He would make this noise for about 30 seconds at a time.... sorta yak, yak, yak yak, yak.. dealie.

I would like to know what it was.
