My kids found a dead nursing squirrel, and I'm fairly certain that it is Cecil whom I raised and released last summer. She was a singleton and we were very close. She has taken up residence at a neighbor's yard who see her daily so I am waiting on positive ID from the husband. He sees her on a daily basis and comes to him when called. I called at the base of the tree and there was movement in the nest but no squirrel emerged.
How in the world do I get those babies down? I thought about a tree man, but I'm sure I can't get one tonight. It will be in the 40's up here tonight. Will they survive the night without Momma?
Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. I am soooo upset!!! It is bad enough to lose her, but to know her babies are way up in that tree just adds to the heartbreak.

Got any friends that are firemen? Can you climb the tree? (I am not saying that to be a smarta$$...just that some trees are climbable)

No and yes, but the tree is not climable. The limbs start way too high and the one the nest is on is dead right above the nest. I don't think it would hold me.
I think a treeman is the way to go but it will be tomorrow. UUUGGGGHHHH!!!

call the fire dept and BEG for help... maybe go to the Fire DEpt and CRY...... those men can't refuse ya if ya crying good.
Shouldn't be too hard... what a shame.
Tell them pet squirrel mamma died and the babies are gonna starve... heck I'm about to cry myself.

I would call the fire dept. and just explain. Worth a try. Electric company? Praying it isn't Cecil.

Okay, it's not Cecil!!! She came down for him when he called. THANK YOU, GOD!!! I've lost my 2 favorite wilds in the last week and couldn't bear to lose Cecil & babies too.
My neighbor said she heard a huge ruckus and a hawk squawking earlier right where they found the female. She said she heard what sounded like baby birds, so I am assuming the hawk was attacking the nest. I am praying the babies are okay and will be stalking the area this evening and the next few days to try to locate the nest.
I had not thought of the Fire Dept. and will definitely keep that in mind. I am certainly not above bribery!!!!
I am going to go bury the poor Momma!! RIP Dear Girl!!!

You might like to go on down to the Firehouse with some cookies and a few squirrel stories. Sorta "prime the pump" so to speak...:D

LOL!!! I think I just may do that. Luckily, I used to be a preschool teacher and taught quite a few of their nieces and nephews. They would always come to the preschool to teach the kids about fire safety. Why I didn;t think of them I have no idea. I think it was sheer panic.
