Tonight I treated Little Man with Revolution. He's an inside/outside squirrel and I really don't want him bringing home friends. So I'm giving him his good night skritchins and feel something weird under one arm. I do believe it's a disgusting bot warble. So my question is--will the Revolution kill it and if it does won't that put Little Man in danger of a nasty infection and if so should I start antibiotics NOW to keep that infection in check. I've seen one warble hole on a sweet outside squirrel. I'm frantic that I've unwittingly hurt my Little Man!!!!!:hissyfit

The only way to really tell if its a bot fly is see a pic of the area..... and yes it is possible that the bot fly could die and if not gotten out that an infection could come about...... but thats if this is a bot fly --pic please.

I'm looking all over for my camera. He's in his cube and I saw the thing by flashlight. Sure looks like a warble to me--lump with a hole. The hole looks juicy--like something is in there. Where in tarnation is the frikkin CAMERA!!!!!!!!

I've never heard that revolution kills bots. If it's an adult squirrel I'd let it run it's course and hatch naturally,(hopefully while he's outside). Of course if he'll let you handle him and would tolerate it you could pull it. I use hemostats and you'll have to clean with diluted betadine. Good luck!

OK--this is taken with an alien camera from inside his cube. He's as sweet as they come, but even he has his limits and being manhandled in the middle of the night by flashlight welding papparazi is NOT making him happy. Is this enough to get an idea?

I am sure that this is a horrible idea, as so many of my ideas seem to be.
We had a kitten when I was a little girl with one of those maggot things like you got in a kitten's neck.
My Mom put 2 drops of turpentine on a cotton ball. Then she put the cotton ball over the entrance hole in it's neck. Then she wrapped gauze over the cotton ball.
The next day, she removed the cotton ball and the maggot thing was attached to the end of the cotton ball dead. Just pulled it right out.
It really worked good, got rid of the pest and the animal was fine.
Should you try it on a squirrel? I ain't gonna Tell you to do it...i'm no Expert for sure.

I'd never say any idea is horrible--specially when it comes to evil bot wurms. My folks are from the hills of North Carolina and some of their home remedies sound crazy but they work. Thing is, Little Man goes out during the day. I could close his cage but he'd likely have a fit and maybe hurt himself cause he's not used to being confined--and certainly not turpentined. Oh I'd do it if his life was in danger but I don't know it is and he's in and out all day so I CAN get hold of him. Vet won't be open till Monday and I'm worried if the thing dies IN him it'll poison him. This is the first summer I've seen bot warbles. I don't like em. I do have some ABs on hand so I can start them if I need to. I'd not have noticed the thing except he was scratching it and I thought he'd cut himself with his sharp little claws. Are bot flies good for anything other than defining the word "nasty."

I would start ABs also.
I do not remove bots unless they are life threatening.
As you have posted, they are dangerous if they die inside the warble,
infection is sure to follow.

I'd read up a little bit on this last night...well because I can't sleep and didn't quite know what this was...disgusting.
So I watched a video on removal also disgusting when you saw how large the bot warble thing was...
The removal remedy that worked was to utilize and agent to clean and shave the surround area or leave if it can't be shaved then apply a second skin tape. 24 hours later the bot warble was dead. No air and suffocated him. Once the tape came off the pull of a tweezer and it came out.
No medicines, digging, or anything.
Not sure it'd work on your little man, but it looks irritated in the picture. :-(
Good luck to you both

Sorry this will be a rough post-on the nook. He's scratching the thing--guess it itches and his claws catch. Jackie--what,s the best ab to give him? I think he's not feeling too good as it's 9 am and he's .still inhos cube. He let me cuddle him in my arms. That's nighttime behavior not daytime behavior. I still have SMPTMZ and Baytril. I don't have a good weight on him anymore since he decided he likes hanging out in the trees but he's ovet a pound. Gotta find the neosporin. I put it down in thedark last night.

Neosporin is water soluable. Of course LM is being his ol ornery self and cleaned most of it off--hopefully cleaning the warble thoroughly while he was at it. Took his doctored pecan this morning and is out being a squirrel. He checked in while I was feeding the babies--is scamming for nuts at the back door--seems OK. I'll keep a REAL close eye on him. Hopefully I'll get a good look at his botboo during snuggle time tonight

I read a post on here about bot flies today. Lots of members said they put peroxide in the hole, covered it for a min , the bot fly came out, cause it was being suffocated, but thats after it had hatched in there ( u said u didn't think it had)

LM is in his cube--came out and ate his medicated pecan. I'm going to try to get a better look at the botboo tonight during skritchins time. There is a pore--pour--poor--however you spell it-- so I think somebody's home but really can't see anything except it's a hole kinda juicy in the middle. It's been over 24 hours since Revolution--a decent size drop cause he's usually moving and a normal size drop ends up partially on me (OK so I won't have fleas). He is eating and was tearing around outside today. I hope beyond hope that Revolution doesn't affect Bot warbles--at least not enough to kill them. If it affects them enough to make them LEAVE that's a very GOOD thing and I'd suggest spraying the yard with Revolution. I don't think the frikkin bot warble cared for Neosporin one way or another. Most likely not all that much got on it as LM cleans himself pretty thoroughly and I didn't stuff it in the hole--just rubbed it on the bump where he'd scratched. Anybody know of something that will kill the eggs of a Bot fly? Diatomaceous earth? Anything? I'd like to cut infestation at the source next year. I've heard the warbles can be removed with hemostats but doubt I can handle that without some help--and it'd be SO easy to crush the fu&*%ng thing. If I thought peroxide would flush it out I'd sure try that. If I messed up he'd just be wet and sanitized and the bot would still be in it's hole. I'll get back on here in awhile after I check him out.

He's messing with it. His cage is closed--a sure fire way to piss him off but he's going to the vet as early Monday morning as I can get him there. It's pretty darned swollen and if he's bit the damn thing he's in danger of being poisoned. Poor sweet Little Man. Think healing thoughts for a very sweet little guy please.

Little Man is in his cube. He's had a quiet day--obviously unhappy that he's not going about his squirrley business but not pacing or agitated and that could be good cause he's so laid back or bad cause he's not feelin well. He's eaten some but not his ab laced pecan. I saw the nasty worm wigglin this morning but the thing has kinda scabbed over this evening and he won't let me mess with it. I sure hope I can get him in the travel cage in the morning. Vet opens at 7:30. I don't think the vets are there that early tho. I don't want to stress that sweet boy out any more than he already is (I think he's handling himself PERFECTLY. I doubt I'd be as even tempered). Hopefully by this time tomorrow it's all done and wurm is history (a nasty chapter).

My sweetie had the damn things ALL over him. Wonder that only one other yard squirrel seems to have a bot warble--vacated.
http://i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/gimpyoneleg/2012%20babies/Sept24-poorLittleMan.jpg
I was worried about the one under his arm that I could see but look at my poor boy. I wondered why the vet said keep him in till stitches came out--coupla weeks--WHAT stitches!--maybe ONE. I dropped him off as soon as the vet office opened--bout 8:00. They called me back and said it'd cost $500 dollars. For a bot warble! Now I see why. By the way--they didn't charge me $500. It was $60 for the meds. WELL worth it. If I'da had to cough up the big doh I'd have done it but hubby would have KILLED me and I'd likely be working two jobs. Thank heavens for Lakeside Animal Hospital!!!!!!!!
So Little Man is NOT pleased. It took awhile to get him back in his cube. Hope it isn't the enemy now. I closed the opening and lifted him inside the cube into the travel cage this morning. He's had an awful day. I'll see if he's up for skritchins this evening. I did reward him with a locally grown chestnut. He wasn't feeling bad enough to refuse THAT. Send some healing vibes to my poor boy. He needs em (and a few "don't chew" vibes won't hurt either)

Thanks. I just checked in on him and gave him some artichoke leaves. He loves those things. He's eating at least. He was frantic to get OUT! I had to barricade the window. Took forever to get him in his cube. Found chestnuts are VERY good bait for hesitant squirrels--and I don't blame him for being shy since I wrapped him in that cube to bundle him into the cage for transport. I just can't believe there were so MANY!

How many were there? and were they alive? did revolution kill them? if they were alive - why did the vet take them out and just not let them take there course?
Sorry so many questions - but just very curious
With the revolution - is this something we have to be careful of - to check and make sure no bot fly - before putting it on?

They were ALL alive and well (yucccch!) I had no idea there were more and didn't know the extent of the surgery until I got him home. There were several on his side, the bad one under his arm and a couple more towards his back legs--maybe 8 in all. As awful as he looks I'm thinkin that many bots could have caused trouble as they got larger. He's hording tissues for a nice fluffy nest so even tho he's not as happy as he would be out squirreling around he's OK. I could tell earlier he didn't feel good--he hung his little head out for some lovins. I think he's uncomfortable as he's restless tonight--but then he's been restless the last few nights--likely from being eaten by warbles. I wudda been real happy to drop those little fu%&ers in the bottle of alcohol.

Wow - that is a lot - poor little guy - can you imagine have those things crawling around inside you - gives me chills! Glad he is ok - although he did get stitches - I still bet he feels better with tall those things out of him
I have a squirrel names Little Man also - He is a little over a year old - I still have not released him yet - he was and still is very small - and I am just afraid he would not make it out in the wild - and I also kinda think he is just a little off - He still loves to loved on - he is still very very affectionate - has never shown any aggression - He is in a outside release cage - but shows no interest in wanting out - I have brought him in the house a couple of times and he does not like it - I can take him out of the cage outside and he could care less - as long as I am standing there loving on him he is fine - and then he wants back inside the cage - So it looks like he will be with me for awhile unless he starts wanting to be free

Little Man has eaten some and seems to be feeling better. He just wants to go OUT. I'd let him run around in the room but the way outside can be easily breached by a determined squirrel. I have his door open right now but it's night and he's gone to bed. I get to love on him when he's in his cube--now filled halfway with kleenex. Oh well--gave him something to do. He's leaving his stitches alone--and that's good. I just want to treat the soil with something to eradicate any bot pupae. Flame thrower?

He was out of his cage for awhile this evening--mostly looking for a way to get out--despite the fact it was dark outside (he didn't know that). He's bored. The wounds look so much better tho I think he might have popped one stitch. He grabbed my hand when I reached in to give him a nite nite skritch a while ago. Didn't hurt me but made it clear he wanted my hand OUT--and this is the same boy who let me examine his bot hole thoroughly (and I'm thinkin that hurt). I may have broken a trust (still glad I did--evil wurms is gone) and it'll take some time to reconnect. He can't run off his energy and he's gonna be antsy-er and antsy-er till he can go back out.
http://i405.photobucket.com/albums/pp137/gimpyoneleg/2012%20babies/Sept26-letmeoutMom.jpg
Till then he's in jail--and the birds don't help--they're noisy and flying around. One went into his cage today while he was out and he did NOT like that. I need to move them temporarily--easy with the older one--not so easy with the babies. It'd be nice if he'd let me take the stitches out when the time comes--one less horrible trip to the vet--but I'm thinkin that won't happen. He's getting anxious cause he wants to go out soooooooo bad!--no trees inside dadburnit!

The hawks are plentiful here and always had me very worried and then I talked to a gal at an event who has educational birds including hawks. She said that they miss 95% of their attempts at catching prey. That eased some of my anxiety and then she showed the toes of the hawk. It was missing a few when a squirrel bit them off which caused it to become NR along with an eye injury.
I love all animals however when you put so much time, love and care into them I really want to see them enjoying their freedom for as long as they can.
