I found a baby in my yard about six hours ago and i'm not able to get him to an animal hospital until early tomorrow morning and ive been trying to give him water mixed with gatorade to rehydrate him but he doesnt want to drink

he's probably about three weeks, his eyes are closed. i don't have a syringe so i've been using a qtip to try and get the water to him but he jerks away from it every time and i don't know if he;s getting any and i tried to check if hes hydrated at all by pinching the skin between his shoulder blades but its hard to tell because he wont stop moving

and now he's twitching or something and when i pick him up he crawls all over me but when i put him down he just lies there jerking and i just don't know what to do

Does the baby have fur or is he mostly pink? They like their fluids very warm so that could be why he is refusing. Which part of SC do you live in?

he's definitely not pink but he's not furry either just kind of fuzzy. how warm is very warm because i have been warming the water some. I'm in charleston.

BABY SQUIRREL CARE:

First thing needed is to warm the squirrel.
Now check for any injuries and/ or wounds.
Hydrate the squirrel right away (use a 1cc syringe) and go slow.
Give homemade pedialyte every hour for eight hours (max 24 hours).
Once hydrated make Goats Milk formula, feed 5-7% of their body weight every 4 hours.

IMPORTANT: Babies must be kept WARM --NEVER feed a cold baby.

I recently just has this issue with a juvenile I found out in the cold after a storm, she was severely dehydrated and she was twitching just like yours was, once I was able to hydrate her though her symptoms started to subside.

Just be cautious when feeding the juvenile because they will try to eat as fast as they can but if you feed them too fast it could end up getting into the lungs and causing pneumonia.

This is an old thread that was started in 2012....

Yes I have a question about when the homemade pedialyte no longer necessary to give to them. Should I still be giving the juvenile the pedialyte after they stop having twitching episodes?

Generally the solution is given no longer than 48 hours.
