View Full Version : Squirrel attacked by 2 dogs;

Smaller squirrel (not a baby but not full grown) was attacked by 2 dogs - it's breathing is stable and I hear the chirping of the mom (or I think the mom) in the tree above. The bite wounds are pretty bad - it looks like it's liver may be hanging out (maybe spleen/stomach? I'm not well versed in squirrel anatomy, unfortunately) and it's not wanting to move it's back legs.
I read the local wildlife rehab site here in Raleigh and I put it in a box with a tshirt like they said to and I'm not sure what to do from here. It's getting cold out so I don't want to leave it in the cold but it's mom is still out there so I feel weird about moving him away from her.
I'm not sure what to do and I feel really bad.
I think I've been tearing up for about 15 minutes now.
I've tried and left a message with the wildlife rehab in Durham and tried getting a hold of the rehibilitator in Raleigh and left a message. I feel helpless.

Oh no poor baby! Mom can't take an injured baby though so by all means take it in and put the container half on a heating pad on low. It needs to get to a rehabber though or a vet. Sounds like it is in bad shape.

I'm hoping the rehabber will get back to me - her message said within 15 minutes. I'm keeping my fingers crossed - it's late now so no one seems to be answering.
I don't have a heating pad available (I'm house sitting and this happened at the client's house); is there a good alternative?

Is there rice and a sock available? You can fill a sock with uncooked rice and microwave it for 30 seconds at a time until it is warm but not hot. Then cover it with a tee shirt and put it into the container wit the baby. If not available use a plastic bottle full of hot water wrapped in a tee shirt. Not too hot! Don't want to burn the baby.

Not sure about rice but I'll check her cabinets in the kitech!
I may be able to do the plastic bottle w/hot water + tshirt - I know she has plastic bottles around. I'll do that now.

I had a flying squirrel a few years ago back when I lived in Florida; I have a soft spot for squirrels. I hope he'll be okay.
Hoping this little one will make it. :Love_Icon :grouphug :Love_Icon
So do I; I'm going to feel terrible if he doesn't. >':

Yes please keep this little one heat, warmth. Most likely he is in shock, and he needs the heat. If you have a heating pad set it on low.
Warm, dark, quiet. I will look for someone to help you.

Well taking him in and getting him warm is best no matter what the outcome. Thank you for taking the time to help him. :thankyou

I have him set up in a dark, quiet area (well, as quiet as I can get with 3 dogs in the house); I don't have a heat pad but did do the warm water/plastic bottle+tshirt.
Thank you for your help; it's extremely appreciated.

Hm, it says they close at 6 so I'm not sure if they'll answer. I called the Durham Rehab group they list on the Wildlife Section and already left a message.
I guess I'll try to give a call and see if anyone answers; maybe they have an informative message system.

Just left a message; I'm going to try to call the rehabber in the town over and see if they answer as well.

How's he doing?
He's laying next to the tshirt with the water - he's breathing fairly stable but slow - I think he may be okay until I can get help if he doesn't aggravate the wound.
I wish I was better versed in this; I was a vet assistant but only with cats and dogs. >:

Any chance you can get a 1cc syringe and some pedialyte?

I'm actually about to head out and see if I can get both of those; I was hoping she had a dropper in the house but I can't find one.
I'm going to run to some stores and see if I can find a syringe or small dropper; the pedialyte should be fairly simple to find.
I'm just worried about moving him since he has a pretty bad stomach wound - hopefully he'll be able to eat in the position he's currently in.

Ask at the pharmacy say its for a kitten and no needle just a 1 cc syringe. Usually free actually

Needs to be on stomach to avoid aspiration. Syringe MUCH better than dropper

Headed out now - I'll see if I can get one (hopefully someone can help me; I'll try the various pharmacy stores)

Like Sissy mentioned, I found the rehabber in Raleigh and she was a lovely individual (who had multiple squirrels) and is going to be calling a couple vets and get him all stitched up; she gave me her contact information so that I could follow up with her tomorrow - she does work through Wildlife Welfare.
Thank you to everyone - you really helped me get through this. A giant thank you to Sissy and Saverywood who helped me over the phone.

I only got word of this this morning. Sorry to respond so late. First and foremost I am greatly relieved that your squirrel was able to get help, and that the rehabber you found is so close by. Thank you for being so caring and kind.
I am in Edenton, North Carolina about 4 hours from Raleigh.
I no longer rehab animals as my neighbor kills any squirrel in our yards, and the town in which I lived condones the act. While I still hold my license, I will never rehab for North Carolina ever again.
If you want or ever need any information, you will have to PM me. Believe it or not, the local police department followed my previous posts on this Board.
Please keep us up-to-date on this little one. I will continue to check in.
Thank you all for doing what you do. It has been so difficult for me to give up taking care of animals, and I am so appreciative that so many of you step up to assist when so many won't. You have my deepest gratitude.

The more and more I hear thing like this I think that other countries have it better then here in the USA. The police will stick up for someone that kills a harmless squirrel what happens when it progresses to killing a person????? Will they condone that????? :dono
What a shame that this is the way society is going right down the ****ter:thinking
