yes, bactrim can be used for pneumonia, but I never used a tablet.
Let me contact a few experts who might help you with dosing

I've never used the tablet either.
This web site has info used in rats but I am too mathematically challenged to convert it.

What mg is the Bactrim tablet?

this is a good dosage calculator, but you must know all the imformation for the drug. http://www.ratclub.org/dose_general.htm

1:The dosage mg per pound. [ that will be on the packaging]. if not there is a link to rat guide to help.

2:The mg per ml.[ the strength of the liquid. For example: if you have a 500mg pill and crush it into 10ml of water it would be 50mg to 1ml so 50mg/ml. MAKE SURE YOU GET THE MATHS RIGHT!]

3: weight of squirrel in grams.

Hopefully one of our experienced people will double check my instructions and see if it's worth making a sticky.

I recommend the Bactrim. Cut the pill into quarters. Dissolve 1/4 tablet into 5 ml of water. The dosage will be .01 ml per 25 grams of body weight twice a day for 10 days. Since your babies are all close to 50 g you should dose .02 ml.

The Bactrim DS does not have a mg on label anywhere. Don't understand that one. it says.. sulfamethoxazole/TMP DS substituted for:Bactrim DS tablet. That's it..:dono

Bactrim is available in tablets in two strengths; 400 mg sulfamethoxazole and 80 mg trimethoprim and the "DS" form which means double strength, 800 mg sulfamethoxazole and 160 mg trimethoprim.

I stopped by the vet today and got a whole bottle of Baytril. They were only about $1.25 each.

Can you get meds from a vet? Where are you at? Close to KY? I can't leave my kids, but would share Baytril if you close enough.

Here's the amount of medicine in each Bactrim DS tablet: BACTRIM™ DS (double strength) TABLETS (white, oval shaped, scored) containing 160 mg trimethoprim and 800 mg sulfamethoxazole

So the tablet has a total of 960 mg of medicine combined. Hope that helps.

Hugs

The pill has IP/272. It is the Sulfamethoxazole. I'm in MS. I will hit the vets office in the morning for Baytril. But I wanted to do something tonite just in case it takes a while for me to get my hands on something tomorrow. If I cant get baytril.. Will amoxi drops work? I'm just trying to cover my bases.

Lucy gave you directions on how to use the Bactrim DS.... did you understand the directions she gave? Sounds like she knows how to use it on squirrels.

the amoxicillin drops would probably help. sigh... read me the bottle, and I will do the math on the dosage IF YOU WILL WAIT TILL I FIGGER IT AND NOT GIVE MEDS BEFORE I FIGGER THE DOSE? OK???

I slow at math, so it gonna take a while if you want to use the amoxicillin drops.

You do have a syringe, with Metric markings on the side?

You know how to measure out correct dose Lucy said?

Be careful. Are you giving some yogurt in the formula? It helped my boy keep diarrhea away.

Good luck little squirrel, get well soon.

Yes.. I believe I have it. Thank you all sooo much. I don't have Amoxi or Baytril. But I am going to try my hardest to get some tomorrow. There is one vet that works with local volunteers that I am told will prob give me the meds. I just don't know how long it will take me to get the meds. The vets office is over an hour away, So first thing in the morning right after the babies feeding, We are off on a road trip to see the wizzard (Vet).:bowdown It won't hurt to try. I appreciate all of your help. I will feel better getting something into them now so hopefully they won't get worse. Thank you all again. I would have lost my mind had I not had you working to help me help my babies. I will check back in tomorrow and let you know how they are doing. :thankyou :thankyou :thankyou :jump

Some times it takes a while to get the diarrhea under control...... I had a few little babies that had diarrhea for a month before we finally got it under control with pedialyte, Imodium D, yogurt, and Flagyl. Jackie in Tampa...... dosed the Flagyl for ME!!

Ohhh we will be getting some yogurt and Imodium on our road trip tomorrow. Figure I will get it all... that way I have it on hand. The 2 bigger ones seem to be getting better but the antibiotics may undo the progress. I will be prepared this time.. :)

Since the babies are also having diarrhea I would stick to the Bactrim because it is easier on their digestive tract.

What formula are you using, how much and often are you feeding them? What are you using to feed them with? How old are they and how long have you had them? Is their poop mushy, watery, smelly and what color is it?

Sorry for all the questions, I am just trying to get an idea on why they have diarrhea. If you told us any of this before I really didn't have the time to read it all.

One more thing, Imodium should only be used as a last resort to stop extreme diarrhea. I would not use it now.

Wow!! My internet was out for days.. I thought I was gonna go mad. Here is the update.. I was able to get Amoxicilln from a vet the following morning. But it was too late for the littlest baby "Piper" . She was just too weak by the time I got the meds. The other two were weak but still eating good and by the second dose of AB they were perking up already. They have lost a good bit of weight with the diarrhea and not feeling to good. Yesterday I was beginning to worry me with their weight loss. But today they both have gained a little back. They don't have diarrhea any more but the poo is still really soft. Would adding some yogurt to their fox valley help firm them back up? OH, and they both opened their eyes yesterday. Yay!! They are just the sweetest little things.. The whole family has come to love them so. Hubby has been with me all the way thru this and he has even come to accept getting pooped on.. So, my question is... What can I do to firm the poo up some?
