Hello everyone. My name is Dana and I am new to The Squirrel Board. I have a little boy (Peanut) that my husband found in the bed of his pickup truck that I have been rehabbing. He was maybe a few hours old when he found him and is now 8 weeks and 3 days old. I have rehabbed squirrels years ago when we lived in the Northwest Florida area but that was a very long time ago and they were always a bit older than this one!! This is the first time that I have rehabbed one that was a newborn.

My husband had went out to leave for work and seen the little guy in the back of his truck and thought he was dead but he moved. (He was parked under a real big oak tree.) When he looked up...about 50 feet high there was a squirrel nest. The baby was freezing and laying in water in the back of the truck where it had rained that night. He picked him up and brought him in the house and gave him to me and I immediately went to work warming him up and all the usual protocol! Afterwards, I tried to get momma to come back to get him but that didn't happen so now 8 weeks later here we are!!

I found The Squirrel Board when I started researching feeding and care since it had been so long since I had rehabbed squirrels and especially one this young and this forum has provided me with all the information I could possibly have needed and I appreciate it so much. Thank you all for the wonderful information that has made the rehabbing process so simple!!

I am going to try to attach some photos from 3 days to 8 weeks...I hope they work!!!

What a wonderful story. I'm glad your husband found it in time. I got my first newborn this summer too. She looks about the same age as yours. I'm from Alabama as well. Looking forward to networking with you!

She's got these bluish silver rims around the black part of her eye. All my other babies have brown there. Is this normal? Is it an age thing? IDK?!

What a beautiful baby! You've done a great job with him. I am also from Alabama and just joined TSB last week. I've never raised or even seen a baby squirrel till I found Chipper in my back yard 6 wks ago. Thankfully he was a bit older than yours, idk if he would have survived. Congrats!

Hi guys, I'm from Alabama also.

Danamnw, I sent you a pm with some questions about Peanut's cage setup.

kastillo, I don't think the blue eyes are age-related. About 6 years ago, I had a little girl that I raised (from a pinky) and released and she had blue eyes but all of the others that I've had did not. Here's a photo of Spot (so named because for many days until she got furry she had an ant bite in the middle of her forehead):

Presently I have 1 little girl about 9 weeks old - she came to us a few days before her eyes opened. She was cold, dehydrated and covered in bot fly eggs but has thrived since then. Here are a few recent pictures of Baby:

Please ignore the messy floor & bookcase; I have found that between work, kids and squirrel, chaos has begun to reign. (Not that I'm ever a neat freak in the first place. :D )

:morning Danamnw Welcome to TSB. :Welcome
What a Beautiful Little Peanut. You are Very Lucky and Dedicated to of raised a Hr old pinky. :bow You've done a Wonderful Job. :bowdown
Hear is a few cites which will come in handy when ordering Baby Squirrel Supples. :thumbsup What Formula are you feeding? We Now Recommend FoxVally 32/40, or FoxVally 20,50. It is made Just for Baby Squirrels. Esbilac, & Hartz is no longer suggested for use when raising Any Baby Squirrel or Flying squirrel. Their had been some many deaths, and Diarrhea Problems. Henry's Pets makes a Squirrel Beginner Block For when you Start The weaning Process.
If you order them now you can put them in the freezer and pull out as you need them later on down the road.

The Mothering Silicone Nipples and the ORing Syringes work wonderful. They even make a Neonate Gray nipple for pinkies. The O Ring Syringes do not stick like the Plunger ones do. :thumbsup3
Can I make a few Suggestions? :thinking Please Put The Heating Pad Under the Container Half On and Half Off. Put it on low. Laying directly on top the Heating Pad can Severely Burn the Babies, When they are young.
(That is why they are making auto shot off Heating Pads, every 2hr. People were getting 2 and 3rd degree Burns.)
Keep all Towels out of Container/cage. Babies can snag their little toenails on the strings/threads, tangle them self up and strangle. Fleece is the best. You can also use Old Cotton Tshirts. Put Peanut in the container with lots of Fleece.
You wont the container to be warm when you put your hand on the bottom. Give Peanut a Dog Toy Stuffy to cuddle with. (Small and bendable to cuddle ,& Snuggle.) :thumbsup5
Squirrel Nutrition If you get a chance stop in and read up on the Squirrel Nutrition and Healthy Diets. It will refresh your memory alittle. :D

Just remember Fall Babies would stay with Mom Throughout the Winter. So you will be overwintering Little Peanut. If you have any Acorn Trees. Start collecting some of the Ripe Acorns to freeze for the winter.
Good luck with Little Peanut. :grouphug
