I got a baby girl this morning The finder said the dog brought it in throught the doggie door. Not a single injury I can find. Just some ant bites on her head I think
Very small with the umbilical stump attached 24 grams. Is it two hours or three for one this young I am thinking less than a week. She is eating well not dehydrated poops are still black so I know she was nursing not long ago. 183014

OMG it is so little and cute. Good luck with the wee one something tells me to feed it every 2 hours, but that may just be the Italian mom in me:D

Every two hours unless you are using FV as it seems to stay in their system longer. 24 grams, you would feed between 1.2 and 1.7 cc's. Look for the milk line before each feeding, we don't want to see it when you're ready to feed.:thumbsup
So cute!:Love_Icon

Been a while since I updated this thread. Two things with this baby first I just noticed a knot on her knee she is not favoring it much still eating the same and all. Must have caught it on something but she has never been in anything but fleece. The second thing is she opened her eyes today and I thought she is way too young for that but looking at my first post I have had her a month today so the time is right but look at how small she is. I guess I lost track of the number of days but she only weighs 44 grams and eats up to 6cc of fv at a feeding and I feed her regular every four to five hours. She eats until her milk line is half way up. She must be a runt I wonder if her momma kicked her out because she was not right. She is sweet and acts normal she is still on heat and has been with the paralyzed squirrel and they stay in a pouch all the time.
Any thoughts on either issue are welcome I am not medicating her she does not seem to be in any pain.
She is skinny and the loose looking skin is pre feeding the round belly is post feeding I do not believe she is dehydrated she eats regular. Fox Valley 1-3 with a little Yo Baby Vanilla yogurt mixed in because I have a baby on antibiotics. She pees great her poop is formed and round perfectly mormal maybe the pellets are a little small. Is there such a thing as a runt failure to thrive baby. I thing she is maturing except for size

Pat, yes there is such a thing as a runt/failure to thrive baby. I think my little Zoey was one. When I posted about my concerns about Zoey, IR told me to get some Ultra Boost and add it to her formula. I immediately bought the Ultra Boost. Zoey grew up to be the most elegant beautiful squirrel...I called her my supermodel squirrel.

Is there a reason why you are still feeding her FV at 3:1? I think she needs every single calorie she can get. Unless there is a very specific reason, I'd mix the Fv at 2:1, order the Ultra Boost and add it as soon as you get it.

Pat, you wrote fv 1 to 3, is that a mistype? You should be making the fv 2/1 and adding in ultraboost. If any concerns of dehydration, you can give fluids in between meals (if you are feeding every 4 hours, then at the 2 hr. mark, give a couple cc's plain water). Stop the yogurt. Just fv with ultraboost.

I am such an idiot I am supprised anyone survives around here I had it in my head for some reason that was the ratio. I know I read the instructions and a million posts here. I just re read the bag Crap I am so sorry now I feel terrible I worry about a million things and I am failing at the most basic thing mixing formula. I am glad I mentioned it and you caught it. Will do on the ultra boost and will start mixing the formula correctly. The other babies I have had grew fine on the mixture and I have no idea when I started doing it wrong.
Thank you again I am sure that will make a huge difffernce

Ok, with the extra formula in the mix, it is possible she was not able to properly digest it. Give her a few feedings of it mixed properly, make sure she is ok on it, then slowly add the ultra boost in. Also, do the water in between feedings. She will catch up. Don't beat yourself up, Pat. You have had alot on your plate to deal with. Give her the extra fluids, start up with the correct mix, then after a few feedings, start giving her the ultraboost.

Thank you I just ordered the ultra boost hope it comes soon I saw someone was having a delay from Henry's in another post. I have an unrelated question seems like when I get eyes open babies they shred my supply of nipples biting them right where they slip onto the syringe and the bottle raised babies do not. Has anyone else noticed this

you are already getting great advise, I just wanted to say, I love your threads, the pics are always so crisp and the babies so beautiful..
btw, Henry's has caught up.. there was a big flood of babies all over the USA at the same time...
the mailman could not keep up...back to normal so it seems, I got my orders!! hip hip hooray!

pappy1264
10-09-2012, 07:54 AM
Yes, I notice that too (well, even my bottle raised babies start chomping on them at some point, too!) I usually just stop using a nipple when they do that. Takes them a bit, but they usually do just fine.

Is anyone close to you, maybe they have some ultraboost they could give to you until yours arrives? You won't be using much, it is 3/4 fv mixed with 1/4 ultraboost.

pappy1264
10-09-2012, 07:57 AM
Just making sure, the '2' in the 2 to 1 mix is the water. So you will take 3/4 (whatever you use to measure out your fv powder) fv and then 1/4 of the ultraboost and mix that to 2 parts water.

pappy1264
10-09-2012, 08:00 AM
Pat, you may also want to pick up some Stoneyfield Whole Milk FV yogurt, and see if she will take small amounts of that. Good for the extra fat and also probiotics to help her tummy. Just a little bit, not mixed with her formula, just by itself. Just take a tiny bit on the end of a teaspoon and see if she will lick it.

patjones
10-09-2012, 09:02 AM
I have some of the Yo Baby Vanilla and some blueberry full fat yogurt. They were out of the vanilla last time I was at the store so I wll give that a shot she is a finger licker already.

10-09-2012, 09:11 AM
Let me ask you (I don't do mornings well), when you said 3/1, was that 3 parts water or three parts formula? When I responded, I was obviously confused myself (I thought it was 3 parts fv, but reread it...see why I need coffee before I do anything? lol) Anyway, yes that will work (the yogurt).

patjones
10-09-2012, 10:26 AM
Yes that is correct I was using three parts water to one part formula and one part yogurt so hopefully the yogurt help make up some of the calcium and fat I was robbing her of and kept her going. So now I will go to 2 parts water and one part 32-40 and when I get the ultra boost will add that mixed to my formula if I understand correctly

I read the email after I check TSB - I also sent you some syringes along with some other goodies - maybe you will get it today - I sent it to your house

I know I saw the video - that is soooo great - very hopeful she will make a full recovery

Is it Tootsie that has that bump on her leg? wonder how that happened? has anyone on TSB suggested anything to do about it?

patjones
10-09-2012, 08:47 PM
I got you package thank you so much you and W have been so generous with me I can't thank you enough especially right now with so much going on and with me not knowing how it will all work out. It is a life saver I was on my last legs with syringes and nipples the older ones get so destructive with them.
That is Tootsie with the bump. She favors it but not much. I am not sure what happened to her she lives in a carrier with fleece no towels nothing to really catch it on. I figured I would just watch it looks like a bad sprain she still flexes the joint some. No one has chimed in on it. Squirrels can always find a way to get themselves in trouble. Rosie yelped from the kitchen the other night ran up my leg and cowered on my shoulder chirping like the house was on fire I never figured out what happened except she has a bare spot on the side of her tail she must have caught it on a half open cabinet or a drawer pull. She was scared for a minute though and she ran to her daddy for protection!!

10-09-2012, 08:57 PM
You are welcome - I was not for sure which nipple and syringes you like to use - So I just sent a variety - you might find some you like better

I am still hoping that things work out for the best for you - being in limbo is horrible

Remember that 1 cage Wendell is bringing you will need to cleaned really well - and you will need to check for loose and poking wires - the other 1 is in much better shape

Be sure and send me some instructions with Buster and Cinnamon - if thats who I will be getting

sweet I will do that you are going to love them I promise they have great personalitys especially Buster but they are both great and very very cute. They love each other they may as well have been brother and sister they sleep together and play toghether even though they are in the cage with the chain saw babies they like each other.

Tootsie got her walking papers this week she has been in the release cage for a month or so off and on I kept bringing her in if it was going to be cold. She was ready to be free for sure. She is big and healthy and is going to do great as a wild squirrel. She is comming back to her cage to eat and sleep it has been a week now. Here are a couple of pics of her first minutes of freedom.

Of course move her to success stories she is one of the best stories ever. Her finder still follows her on facebook and told everyone at her thanksgiving the whole story this year.
I should log in here more often but I stay so busy working six days a week and still trying some photography. I am forever in debt to this board there are lots of squirrels alive in this area that would not have had a chance without the help I have recieved here.
