My little Leo started having diarrhea last night and was sneezing. He still had the diarrhea and the sneezing was about the same today. Tonight he was active when I got him out and trying to leap from me to the dresser beside me, but had not interest in food what so ever. I had started him on Baytril because I didn't want to risk the possibility of him having pneumonia and me letting it get worse. What should I do? I gave him LRS SQ since he wouldn't eat. My two girls are doing great, they are eating like champs and their stools are back to normal.

What is Leo's diet? How old is he?

Today is his first day strictly on the FV and then rodent blocks. I just went to give him more pedialyte since he didn't eat and he was chewing on a block, but still won't have anything to do with FV.

What was he eating for formula? Did you mix it and change a bit at a time?

I know with guinea pigs and hamsters we always nebulize them with gentamicin when they get pneumonia, if anyone thinks that would help I could do that.

he was on esbilac and I slowly switched him to goats milk then slowly to the fv.

Why do you suspect an infection?

I would backtrack a bit with the GM. What mixture was he willing to eat?

he is sneezing and had green ocular discharge, sorry I forgot to mention that. I can deal with sick animals all day at work but let one of mine move the wrong way and I freak. I may just be over reacting if I am just tell me and I will stop haha I just don't want him to get worse

he really LOVED the goats milk and I had to get a smaller syringe to slow him down when he was eating it.

I will not even begin to guess on the medical portion of this but the eating I will. If he willingly ate the Gm with FV combo I would stick to whatever ratio he was willing to eat and do the switch more gradually. Formula is just too important to stop so young.

I will definitely go try that right now! Thank you, one of my main concerns was that he stopped eating. If you know of anyone to point in my direction as far as the medical part goes let me know! My vet felt it was more of an upper resp. infection this morning when she listened to him but we see small animals and exotics not wildlife. So if I am over doing it with the antibiotics I will stop but in college, green= infection, was beat in my head so that's why I started them.

There are some people that keep their squirrels on the goat's milk formula and never switch. Were you adding the heavy cream and yogurt?

yes, I am. I just gave him a 2:1 of the goats milk and FV and he took 4 1/2mls. I'm hoping maybe the FV just didn't agree with him

how many mg/kg are you treating with on the baytril?
that can give diarrhea as well as formula switching..
no heavy cream in the formula until all poops are perfect..
def need the yogurt if not using a probiotic for the baytril..it is a gut buster.
go slow...he'll adjust to the formula...
strengthen the ratios as you go today.:thumbsup

I have him on 10mg/kg of the baytril, and I have him on benebac as well. Should I give him the benebac daily or as it says on the bottle?

Although I have BenBac here, I just don't use it...
would rather not say as my experience is nil if you are having diarrhea, would rather an experienced user answer that..
I love yogurt!:)

Should I give him more yogurt than what's in his goat milk?

He normally goes after every feeding, which is every 4 hours and then he has went a couple of times in between feedings. He had the diarrhea before I started the antibiotics and then before the diarrhea he was having soft stool.

I don't, I use yogurt in all my formula.
It's advised to give a probiotic two hours either side of ABs.
I give cipro with apple juice as it's not really supposed to be given with dairy, but it is not really that sensitive:peace
I know others use benbac:dono
There is always someone here on ABs..I like my protocol.:thumbsup

Thank you so much Jackie, the yogurt worked like a charm! Leo stool is almost back to normal!
