They might not have electric, which means no phones, internet, etc.

Start sending the TSB prayers...we know how they work.

I am going to try to determine how close they are to the most effected/vulnerable areas. BRB with any info I can find.

okay, just listened on NPR and it said no casualties~~ not "significant" damage and everybody is okay. also, *some* tsunami alerts have been cancelled. I feel a little bit better. the news said Costa Ricans are *used to* earthquakes and this isn't that unusual~~

Having an earthquake of that magnitude is bad enough, the possible tsunami could really be devastating to them from where they sit!

CritterMom
09-05-2012, 12:05 PM
It doesn't sound like a lot of casualties at least not yet but they are evacuating the coast because of the tsunami warnings. How in the ^%$$ are Stosh and Rosie going to get out of there with two squirrels??

God I hope they check in...

Actually 3 squirrels.

I've been trying to call the office phone...it rings and rings and then goes to a super fast busy signal...???

Might be the lines, might be that circuits are overloaded, might be anything.

If they are evacuating the coast, do they also mean the coast that Stosh and Rosie are on or do they mean the coast closest too the epicenter (I realize you have no way of knowing this)

Call me bold, I do not care. I just called the Developer (the company that built the buildings/community that Stosh works at). I called their office in Ft. Myers, Florida.

The lady I talked to said that the construction manager has been in contact with Stosh (and/or staff at Pacifico Retail Village), everyone is OKAY, they did have some minor damage (roof tiles) and they are currently out checking all of the buildings for cracks (looking for severe damage).

She also said that from everything that they've heard there are NO injuries.

So after searching the internet and seeing the videos that are all over the place, I decided to keep calling in an attempt to reach Stosh.

I could NOT reach Stosh personally, but I did talk to someone at Pacifico. The English was pretty broken and there was A LOT of noise on the line so I had a hard time hearing and understanding, but from what I could gather everyone is okay, they are pretty shaken up, Stosh was out looking at buildings.

The tsunami warnings have been cancelled.

Some coastal areas over by the epicenter were evacuated as a precaution.

Now, I guess we just have to wait for Stosh/Rosie and/or any of our CR family to come online...

In my crazy afternoon or inspections, photos, documentation, and safety...I only felt ONE.
The guard near my office, sits outside on a metal chair, and said there was about one/hour since the 7.9 JUMBO ground shaker of this morning.

Hello TSB Family.... well, for my part I am glad today is coming to a close. I do hope our squirrel friends closer to the epicenter are alright and that they will check in soon. The earthquake was an amazing experience and glad I got to "...feel the earth move under my feet. idea .." Have felt little quakes every year we have been here but THIS was beyond any idea of 'quake' this FL girl could imagine. Our babies are now in bed but most of the day they were very upset.... during the quake Cruiser was in his cage.... Rama was on his butt board. And Luna in her box seemed to ignor every thing..... not so the boys. At first it felt like any of the other little 5 - 10 second shakes.... nothing to ponder upon but it kept on shaking and then as the shaking continued it excellerated ... at first I was telling my boys it was okay.... just a little quake but then it got worse... and I could not go to them...while they were FREAKING OUT ! ! ! I couldn't hardly stand up so I grabbed two walls and tried to hold on so I would not be thrown to the floor. I would have gotten under the dining room table except it was made of glass. Everything was shaking so fearcely that I couldn't make my way down the stairs and outside.... besides I wanted to go to Rama, as he was loose..Cruiser was running wild in his cage but he was safe. Rama had jumped to his 'big stick'. It was swaying so much that he could hardly hold on and eventually he ran the banister upstairs and hid..... I could not follow as I was just trying not to fall.
I truely thought that perhaps the local volcano had a major eruption and I kept looking towards the french doors to the lania to see if a black cloud would go by... but no. It was amazing........ and although it was exciting it was also very VERY frightening. I would have rather been outside in the open...I feel I would not have been near as frightened. I truely feared that the building would come down upon us. The shaking was tremendous. So far it is known that 3 people have died... two of heart attackes... one a wall fell on. There have been at least 60 aftershocks, most can not be felt.... but... I have a drink on the coffee table in front of me and every so often I see it do just a tiny shimmy. Thank you so so much to Everyone for caring. It took hours for the boys to calm down enough to eat and go to bed. And I have to mention, Milo's Mom, Wow ! ! ! You really 'went the distance'. Love to you all. Stosh has been busy, busy, busy and will fill you in on all the rest. This was just my day. Now, it is time to breathe and smile a little. Stosh & I both wanted to experience a major earthquake but I wanted it to be outside, and with him. DANG ! ! ! Guess I should have been more specific when I '...put my order in'. HA !

Stosh I really wanted to talk to you, but I knew if you were out working it meant that you were okay, and I was plenty happy with that.

Rosie, I would have totally FREAKED...like lost my composure, curled into the fetal position in a corner. You did an awesome job and I am sure that even though you could not get to the boys, them just being able to smell and hear you brought them some comfort (they may not have been showing it at all times though).

Many many hugs to ALL of you.

Good Morning from "calm and for the time being stable Costa Rica"... ( for now) possible aftershocks today and tomorrow--up to 6.0......

Yesterday -during the SHAKING...I was outside and first thought it was a volcano also... I looked towards where the three volcanoes are on the horizon and saw nothing. It was LOUD and rumbling. THEN I noticed my old Ford van--- It was swaying/ rocking back and forth like three strong guys were rocking it. I mean the top was moving over a foot each way and I could even see the tires compress as it tilted over.
The amazing thing was HOW LONG it lasted. I did not time it but it was at least 30 seconds. That's a long time to be standing on "solid ground" that felt to me, like walking on a bed mattress. LOUD, Vibrations, and a MUSHY feel to the ground.
ALL in ALL it was WAY COOL !!! I loved it. I was laughing and talking to the guard that was nearby-saying " LOOK at my van !!! " Also there as a building near by that is completed to the 4 th. floor and has hundreds of 8 ft tall re-bar steel rods poking up from the concrete slab for the 5 th floor walls. They were swaying--in unison--back and forth like cat-tails on a windy day.
I am glad no one here was injured..mostly roof tile damage and MANY water heaters shook so much they broke the PVC water lines and flooded several homes.
TODAY will be a ZOO.All the out-of -country owners will need updates and we will assess the damage even more thoroughly.

THANKS again for your concern...it means a lot. Hey Ya-all come on down...maybe YOU TOO can get FREAKED OUT...!!! ha !

Milo's Mom

Stay safe today Stosh! It's commonly known that the after shocks can cause significant damage, as the initial quake has "loosened/weakened" the structures.

Does Pacifico have a Disaster Recovery Plan in place? Like a written documented on paper DRP. If not, it might be a good thing to suggest/help implement. The company appears large enough so I'm sure they have something in place in general, but I'm talking a plan that is specific to your location.

Building it high. Its going to be 10ft high, 5ft wide and 3ft deep. Its still in pieces but ill post pics when its complete. Rocket is happy and healthy. Oh good grief--you guys have had quite the adventure. Thank heavens the adventure turned out OK. So any major aftershocks? Stay safe guys. We had a tiny quake in VA last year--nuthin like yours but realizing that rumble isn't a big truck going by but the HOUSE--was exciting and really unsettling. My birds went crazy! All the squirrels were out but I'm guessing they knew something was up. Pretty intuitive critters. Did you notice the quake in your body? I felt it shaking my innerds--weird. Keep that Rescue Remedy handy--just in case--and lots of prayers are headed your way that there won't be a repeat performance.
