View Full Version : Found Baby in Dog Pen, Very small, HELP PLEASE

I admit I don't know jack about raising squirrels, only had one so far and he was big enough to eat on his own when I found him.

I got a call from neighbors today and they found a baby squirrel that had apparently fell out of tree into a dog pen full of squirrel dogs!

Poor baby.

He is very small, head is about the size of a silver dollar, maybe smaller.

His tail is nice and bushy, He looks like the dogs did not bite him, but he was traumatized.

I will take PICS as soon as I find camera cable... durn it.

Neighbors report giving him drink from syringe. Baby took water well.

I put him in a shoe box with a blankie and a rice buddy.

I have no idea if he is big enough for regular food or still needs formula.

Please help me.

Baby Squirrel Information

1) Is the baby uninjured? Is mom still around? and if so, warm the baby and place in a safe spot where mom can reunite if possible. Mom will not take a cold baby!
2) Okay, so you couldn’t reunite with mom. Start by warming the baby in a plastic container full of fleece or tee shirt material. (Not towels as the loops catch little claws and can cause injury) Place the container half on a heating pad that is set on low. It needs to be a heating pad that does not have an automatic shut-off. It needs to be half on and half off so that the baby can get off of the heat if it gets too hot.
3) Check to see if the baby is dehydrated. You can do this by gently picking up the skin on the back of the baby’s shoulders. If the skin goes right back down it is not dehydrated. If the skin remains “tented” for a time, you will need to rehydrate with Pedialyte or homemade Pedialyte.

Hydrate them right away (use a 1cc syringe and go slow)........ give some homemade pedialyte every hour for six to eight hours and then you can start start feeding them some formula made from goats milk (if they are thoroughly hydrated).
Pedialyte for no more than 24 hours!!! Too much sodium!!

Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup warm water
1/4 tsp salt (teaspoon)
1 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)

Feed slowly with a 1cc syringe - head UP tail DOWN
Keep warm at all time – If no heating pad available fill bottle with hot water (cover bottle with sock) or fill a sock with dry rice or beans and microwave. Be sure to squish the rice or beans around to be sure there are no hot spots that might burn the babies.

____________
4) Once rehydrated begin to feed Fox Valley formula which can be ordered from http://foxvalleynutrition.com or while waiting for that to arrive use recipe below. As a general rule you will feed 5 - 7% of their body weight per feeding

Homemade Goats Milk Recipe -

1 cup Goats Milk * (if can - dilute)
1/3 cup Full Fat Vanilla Yogurt
1/3 cup Heavy Cream (frig section)

(lasts 72 hours in frig)
5) This information is really just meant to get you through until you can get the baby or babies to an experienced rehabber. If you are here on The Squirrel Board, you have access to all of the information you could ever need about squirrels. Most importantly there is generally someone here who can help to find you someone who can take the babies and prepare them for life in the trees. The trees are where they are meant to be and people here know how to get them safely there!

OK, bought heating pad....

Milked the goat.....

All I could find was FAT FREE vanilla yogurt at the rural store I live nearby?

Should I use it or not?

Baby does not have tenting, don' t think he is dehydrated but I could be wrong...

You really need the full-fat. Especially if he is skinny... The cream may cause GI issues without the yogurt. Where are you again? Maybe someone nearby has FV you can borrow until you can get some.:thinking

thanks ..

I'm not even knowing how old he is or how to tell... looked at the stickies and can't find how to age them?

anyways...

UPDATE ON General Nathan Bedford Forrest the Squirrel's LIFE THUS FAR.

Neighbor now says squirrel picked up by dog outside dog pen.

He also related that an adult squirrel was killed in the yard by a hawk.

I bet Gen. Forrest's Mom was the one who got eaten. He is so skinny, that I bet he has gone a couple of days without mamma and came out of his nest trying to find some water or something?

How often should I be feeding this little fellow? Every 2 hours?

I would guess age is about 6 weeks maybe at most.

His ears are the biggest thing he has right now. Fur is good, might be a little thinner on his legs, but tail is full.

No meat or fat on his bones at all. Very skinny squirrel.

Thanks

CSL, go slowly with this baby even tough he's an eager eater. His little system will be overtaxed by too many calories all at once. Feed every 3 hours, and you might offer some hydration in between for the first day......homemade pedialyte works best. After he is up to speed you can probably go to every 4 hours. Make sure he's pooping and peeing as often as possible, but he probably won't have much of either for the first 24 hours.

Thanks for posting. I appreciate the help sooooo much.

Gen. Forrest is still alive ! :D

He drank another 2 cc of goat milk at 10:30 pm and seemed to be done.

He is sleeping quite a bit, moving from under the covers to the cool side of his box and back to the warmer side.

He just drank 3 cc at 1:30 AM and seemed to want more. Then right back to bed he went. I guess I will get up in 3 hours and do it again.

Such a blessing to have this little fellow in my life.

He is not being defensive or trying to bite me at all. ( He did nail my neighbor)

Now my neighbor has it in for the poor hawk who ate his Momma. I wouldn't want to be that hawk! poor hawk, he is just being a hawk.

Thanks again for the help.

Well mamma CSL was bad girl and slept for 5 hours..

I woke up terrified to look in the General's box, but he alive and well :D :D

General ate about 3 cc and taking another nap.

No pee pee or poo poo yet, but I guess that is to be expected after being starved nearly a week (4 days).

Got the crew out looking for siblings, hoping to find the others... but I bet they are stilll in a tree somewheres.

The General is eating well and climbed up on my hand after eating this last feeding.....

Ordered my milk for FV.... Should I get the kind that is 20/50?

Surely he is 4 weeks old, but no squirrel expert.

anyone got psychic powers? if so, please tell me where the Nikon camera cable is please so I can post pics of the General.

Thanks

Searched for the other siblings, but did not find any of them :(

Looks like mom was a new mom and the nest was just some leaves in the crook of a tree limb......

Neighbor said he found Mom's body on Monday, so he went nearly 5 days without food/etc. if neighbor is correct.

The General just ate another 3 cc, which seems to be about all he wants at any time.

Anyone know which kind of milk I should order, they haven't called me back yet and gotten my $$$, so there is still time to pick either 1 day old milk or the 4 week old variety. Please advise.

Either will work, meaning the 32/40 or the 20/50. I have not read the entire thread, sorry, are the General's eyes open? If so, go with the 20/50.

WE HAV E POOPIE :D :D :D

Yeah! The General ate well at his 2 AM, 6 AM feedings, and this morning at 10 the lil devil was trying to sneak out his lil box !!!

He heard me wake up and was coming after me for the food :D

and inside his box was lots of lil poopies... hard, black and dry, but still poopies ....

He seems sooooo much better this morning.

ALAS... Nick from Fox Valley called this AM and I won't get his formula until Thursday cuz of the holiday Monday... shucks... Hope he makes it OK on the goat milk formula until then.

The GENERAL seems torn between being afraid of me, and knowing that I got the milk... dunno if he will tame up good or not.

This is the first day that he has felt good since his Mamma got eaten by the hawk though.

Fingers crossed, and praying for him

CSL

p.s. Do all squirrels like to be rubbed on the chest? The General throws his hands back to allow me greater access to his chest. He LOVES it. My last baby did too!

I am so worried.....

General did not have much of an appetite at 6 pm feeding, and then again at 10 pm, he acted like he did not want to eat either....

Got a couple ccs in him each time, but he is not as greedy as he was.

I ordered formula but it won't get here until Thursday, and also ordered squirrel blocks and stuff (calcium, etc.) from Henry's. Wow $20 a pound.

I'm just sitting up waiting for 2 am feeding before I go to bed.

I'm getting worried.

This morning the General is in fine form. He ate really good and then proceeded to run around! and bite me repeatedly!

Then he took up a squirrel block and held it in his hands, then he started gnawing on it.

Finally he took a nap, and although I have had very little sleep tonite, seems like I can't go back to bed very easy...arrrrggghh.... lol

just wanted to let ya'll know he is doing good at this writing :D

heehee so true. I am a zombie with no sleep today haaha

General is doing real good today, eating well. Milked the goat again for fresh milk (what fun) and mixed up some more yogurt/cream/goat milk.

Won't get the FV milk until Thursday.

Anyways, the General is up walking, and even PLAYING today! He bit me real good a couple of times, (he is gonna be a biter for sure)

He is still a little afraid of me, but it's only been 3 days or so, so he will get to loving me real good soon.

He does come to me when he sees me open his nest box, after ascertaining that i am gonna hold still. LOL

THANKS TO ALL ONCE AGAIN

Taking care of a squirrel that can see may be more challenging that blind squirrel care !! lol

The General was in rare form after eating, he wanted to PLAAY!

He escaped from his nest box and jumped onto my hand, then climbed up my arm. He did this about 10 times, and he is a good climber.

He is a good jumper tooo hahaha.

Nice well formed tan poopies again today and suspicious wet spots in the bedding make me think he is peeing too, but I didn't see it happen lol.

He is feeling frisky indeed.

Finally went down for nap after 10 pm feeding... drank about 3 cc each feeding, which I hope is enuf food? don't have tiny bathroom scales to weigh him on lol.

Guess I will try to stay up until 2 am feeding is over if anyone wants to chat it up and join me :D

I am writing a song today about me and the General....

I smell like pee, cuz a squirrel just peed on me..... heehee

Well that is all I have so far... hahahahah

Last nite the General was in his box and I see him squat down and boy did he take a big peepee. His eyes closed halfway, like he was really enjoying it too.

Then this morning he climb out onto my chest and peed some more on my shirt, so now I should be in the bath tub, but what is a little squirrel pee among friends? haha

He is doing SOOOO good on Aunt Jackie's formula of goat milk.

I am going to have to switch nest boxes, as the little devil is a climber and I think he may sneak out when he ain't supposed to heehee.

How could anything sooooooo skinny be so strong and good at climbing and jumping?

He must have climbed down 25 or 30 feet out of his nest when Mamma squirrel died to get some help. Too bad his siblings were not found. so sad.

Oh today for first time he did this little hump back jumping around, it was so cute I laughed out loud.

Life is better sharing it with a squirrel!!! :D

All I can say again is THANK YOU TSB for saving my baby.

Today I was at the drugstore and saw some reading glasses. Eureka! I thought... "That is just what I need to see the Geerals tiny mouth better"

I bought the reading glasses and at feeding time, put them on and started to feed the General.

The General looked at me, did a double take, and looked again. It was clear to me that he was wondering who this new person was with the food... I could tell he did not like my "new look".

So off came the reading glasses. LOL

Then the General gobbled up 6 cc in a feeding frenzy. Milk flew and foamed around his whiskers a little. He tried to swallow the tip of the syringe.

He was one hungry baby. lol

I moved him into a bigger nest box as well, so he could have more room to play. It was obvious in a past life the General was some kind of Houdini escape artist. He has "escaped" 2 times from old nest box, but all is well, as I was right beside him during the escape attempts .... hahaha

Hello to All from the General.

The big boy is doing really well today. Eating like a hog, peeing and pooping real well.

Today he was jumping and playing. I thought the new, BIGGER nest box wouuld be Mt. Everest and impossible for him to climb out of.... I thought wrong.

That lil devil jumped up, clung to the plastic, and heaved him self right to the top in a blink of an eye! heehee

CSL is getting slap happy from the sleepless nites (yawn)

The General is still nibbling on a squirrel block from Wal Mart. He likes to gnaw at it and swallows tiny pieces too!

I still cannot find my dadblame camera cable. (Send for psychic locator haha) That may be only way I find it I guess.

I am supposed to go and get my teeth cleaned today, waited 3 months for appointment. I will have to cancel, as it is at the General's feeding time.

After 4 days it seems the General is finally not afraid of me anymore! yippie! I notice when he is frightened his tail poofs up like a cat's tail. Is this normal? It is so cute....
