alright so I've had this flying squirrel for..id say 3 days. I found him belly up & drenched from our previous thunderstorm. I took him home, fed him little cherry tomatoes with some soy milk. he was a burst of energy, seemed fine. He normally sleeps curled up in a ball but today I found him slouched over? He seemed like he was dead, he wouldnt open his eyes or move really. When I fed him, he started to move more & opened his eyes. Im guessing it has something to do with his diet because, he walks around slowly. When Im holding him he puts his face in my palm like hes looking for something. Im trying to order FV. I plan on buying puppy formula & maybe pedialyte?

This probably isnt life threatening but Id rather be safe than sorry. I dont know what to do. :dono

How much does this baby weigh? Do not get puppy formula, go to the grocery store and pick up some goats milk (w/vitamin D, not the one with the added iron), some full fat yogurt (Stoneyfield Whole Milk French Vanilla is good), and some heavy cream (although initially I would only do the yogurt and gm together). I would also get some pedialyte too, and start him on that first. Make sure he is on heat (on low, under half of enclosure) before feeding, make sure he is warm. Are his eyes open?

I honestly dont know how much he weighs but he's pretty small. thank you so much but the only problem is that its very hard to find full fat yogurt around here. I have him on a water bottle heater that he loves laying on. His eyes are open, he just seems weak now.

Your going to need a heating pad set on low- not the shut off kind- water bottles don't provide consistent or lasting heat which they need for digestion.
Your going to need the goat's milk mixture immediately soy milk is not substantial enough for- the recipe on how to mix is on the forum just do a search here.
How often do you feed and how much?
How often do you stimulate him to pee and poop?
How are his poops like what do they look like?

He is probably suffering from low blood sugar and malnutrition which is deadly- he's a cutie by the way make his diet a priority.

Temporary Formula for Infant Squirrels – The Goat’s Milk Formula

Because of recent manufacturing issues, Esbilac and other puppy formulas are no longer being recommended for squirrels or other wildlife. The formula that TSB recommends, Fox Valley Day One, is currently available online at www.foxvalleynutrition.com and www.henryspets.com. But those require shipping and this baby squirrel needs food NOW.

One of our senior members who posts as Jackie in Tampa uses an excellent temporary substitute, and it can be assembled from locally purchased ingredients:

3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt

Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.

Goat’s Milk
This can be purchased at natural food stores such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, and at most health food stores that sell groceries. It is a product for humans. Do not substitute commercial formula made for baby goats or other livestock sold at feed stores.

Goat’s milk is available fresh in a carton; evaporated in a can; and as a powdered milk. If you purchase either the evaporated or powdered versions, please blend them with water according to the package directions before using to make the formula.

Heavy Whipping Cream
This is found in small cartons in the grocery store near the coffee creamers and half and half. Regular heavy cream may be substituted if it is unavailable, but the heavy whipping cream has the highest fat content, and is preferred.

Yogurt
Yogurt has beneficial bacteria in it that soothes and settles digestion. Full fat yogurt is best, and a good choice that is very widely available is Stoneyfield Yobaby yogurt. However if it is unavailable, a low fat vanilla yogurt may be substituted. Avoid those that have artificial sweeteners in them. Vanilla and banana are both popular flavors, and the sweet taste of the yogurt helps to convince the baby to accept it.

It has been recently discovered that very small pinky squirrels may do better digestively if, instead of being given Fox Valley formula straight, mix the Fox Valley 50/50 with the Goat’s Milk Formula assembled WITHOUT the heavy whipping cream.

*It is recommended that when just starting to feed a new baby that the first feedings be made without the heavy whipping cream. This will give their digestive systems a chance to acclimate from mama’s milk to our substitute without the harder-to-digest whipping cream. Once they accept the formula and are eliminating properly, the whipping cream can be gradually added in.

When your Fox Valley formula arrives, please transition your babies to the new formula slowly, by blending the Goat’s Milk Formula with the blended and liquefied Fox Valley formula, increasing the ratio of Fox Valley with each feeding until you are no longer using the goat’s milk.

You need to get a gram scale, so you can monitor his weight and also to know how much to feed. Just posted temporary gm recipe, which will be good for him (start off w/o the heavy cream for a few feedings so his tummy can adjust). Also, you will need a heating pad, with no auto shut off, set on low under half his enclosure. A soda bottle does not work consistently enough and him getting cold can cause organ failure (also, you should never feed a cold baby!)

Hi CheyB!

I am trying to PM you but seems like you are too new to the board, so I can't. Please either private message me or e-mail me (pghharpist@yahoo.com) and I will get you Mrs. Skul's phone number. She is the flyer lady on here and she will give you instant help over the phone. She is the best person to talk to. She has helped me through many a flyer disaster!

Have you ordered the FoxVally 32/40 Yet? Do you have this Baby on a Heating Pad half under the container? Heat is still a MUST at this age. :thumbsup3
