I just found Goliath limp in his bed this morning and occassionally gasping. This is the squirrel that was brought to me will be 2 weeks ago this Thursday and was limp and severly dehydrated. He never did come to normal and I've always had to kind of force him to eat, but he seemed to be progressing slowly and opened his eyes on Friday and has been taking 5-6 ccs of formula.
I found him this morning when going to feed him and he was limp and didn't have control of his body, (possible seizure?) and taking some occassional gasps ofair. Should I try to feed him? I don't have molasses. Can I give him something else?
I've been worried about him since I got him, because he never perked up like a normal squirrel, but did seem to be slowly progressing and even taking steps out of the bed and back in again.
Please help!

As I was typing,
I think I may loose him. He seems to be getting stiffer and breathing is slowing:shakehead :shakehead

He's still alive, just very still. Has a heart beat and is breathing. If someone is out there that can give advice, please respond!

Do you have maple syrup (real or fake)? Rub it on his gums and see if he'll take some sugar water.

He's not clicking at all, just gasping?

I just put maple syrup (real) on his gums. No clicking, just occassional gasping, not all the time and he never aspirated once since I've had him, just for the record

After he took that on his gums, he started trying to move, but he arches his back and doesn't have control of his body. :(

This is definitely seizure activity....he may very well be in his last moments -- I am so sorry, virginia. If the seizure was hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) the syrup may bring him out of it....but prepare yourself for the worst. :(

I had a bad feeling about him when I got him, but I am surprised he hung on this long (a week and a half) How much maple syrup can I give him, just what's on his gums? Can I try to get a little milk down him?

You can syringe sugar water into him too. Syrup is good if he won't swallow because it sticks in the mouth and is absorbed by the membranes.

Wheew!
that was scary, I just got off the phone with Anne.
I was syringing sugar water into him and he started perking up and regained body function, opened his eyes and started eagerly taking the syringe. While on the phone with her, she told me to go ahead and put some of the syrup in his formula and feed him. He took his feeding and now seems very sleepy, but better.
I am separating him for the rest of the day from the others to monitor him and adding maple syrup in his water, (going to buy some molasses today-just ran out not too long ago) and feeding him like that.
Thanks guys and any other suggestions, please feel free to throw them this way! :thankyou :grouphug

With this kind of special situation, should I go back to night feedings? I think he went too long in the night from feeding (it was about 10 hours, so he probably shouldn't go longer than 8 in the night, right?)

thank you Anne for sharing

it may very well be glycemic seizures..
feeding less more ofter sometimes fixes things..

What schedule should I put him on then?

What schedule should I put him on then?

He weighs 90 grams. He's five and a half weeks old with eyes open.
He should be taking 6 cc's per feeding, but it's hard for me to even get that into him. Yesterday I did. He usually wants to stop by 4 cc's, and I have to force the last 2 into him.

What schedule do you have him on now?
I think like Jackie that I would do more feedings, perhaps every 3-4 (tops) hours, he will take less, but in the course of the day, he will take the same amount if you do it more often.
Since it's a struggle to get the last 2 cc's in, this may just do the trick. They usually know when they're full.
Do you stimulate during feeding or wait until the end?
I ask only because perhaps if you stimulated after the 4 cc's then offer the addiitonal 2, he may take it better.

Just got back to my computer and man am I glad to hear that he responded! :thumbsup
virginia, he sounds like the type who cannot take too long between feedings without going into hypoglycemia. 10 hrs is a very long time anyway.....my guys don't go that long until they are 8-9 wks old. I wouldn't let him go longer than 6 hrs between right now. Feed him as late as you can at night, then crash for 5-6 hrs and wake up and feed him again. (You can always go back to sleep. :)) He is very small for his age (I know, he's a FL squirrel, but still....) so he needs extra help. :)

Okay, then this is what I'll do, (please feel free to object if you don't like this plan)
I'll go every 3 hours and give 4 cc's and build from there.
(I agree with you island rehabber-he is small and needs to gain more)
I won't let him go longer than 6 hours in the night.
And see what he does.
Thanks guys!

His schedule before was 5-6 cc's every 4 hours and then usually an 8-9 hour break at night. Last night he went 10, because it's been crazy, but I'll do better on that part.
:thankyou

all FL babies are small this year..
the weather messed with mother nature..
we had drought..
very few babies earlier in the year like normal as the moms knew there would be no food without rain..so they crossed their ankles..
HOWEVER..the minute it rained twice,
the girls put on their nicest bling and some channel and went buck..:D
and our acorns are so teeny and not a big crop that I can see..
hence little minis in Florida..
and all of the sudden they are everywhere..:sanp3

get well baby squirrel..:Love_Icon

Jackie,
Anne had asked me if he was emaciated and I said no, but I started feeling on him and my husband did too and his bones are really sticking out more than they should. How can I fatten him up? I went to the store and just brought back some molasses, but they had no decent yogurt. The closest store around me is 30 minutes that sells everything I need. I'll try to go tonight or tomorow.

I love the Chanel and the nicest bling part:rotfl
That's hilarious!

Went for 3 pm feeding (2 feedings after emergency this morning) and found Goliath sitting on top of his bed and he had pooped out what looks like an explosion. There was a very large pile of poop that then turned to watery diarhea all over his bed. (thinking maybe the molasses and maple syrup?)
Is this normal? Should I just feed normally? He ate fine.
Just curious.
