I was just wondering if squirrels lose their hair. My Sammy has some new thicker hair coming in and a patch of missing hair. I am attaching some pictures. Thanks for your help.

Squirrels have two seasonal molts. In the spring they lose hair from head to tail and in the fall from the tail up. This may just be a spring molt. I don't see any redness or scabbing. Is Sammy itchy? Is he rubbing against something? Or has there been any recent changes in the house that may have been stressful for him? Hair loss can also be caused by stress. Otherwise I wouldn't worry unless it becomes worse.:)

I came across this in one of my books last night.

If the hair loss is symmetrical, starting around the head and progressing backwards, suspect nutritional problems. Usually boosting the protein levels and reducing the fat intake in the diet will reverse the condition. (PC Hanes)

Hope this helps.
