Hello squirrel lovers,
I need help please.
I'm in Montreal.
Found a squirrel (about 5 to 6 weeks old).
I think his left leg is broken.
I'm feeding him with milk for kitten mixed with pedyalite and I'm keeping it warm.He is ok.
I called the urban animals advocate but they can't help the squirrel if his leg is hurt. I don't know what to do. I don't want to bring him to the spca because I'm pretty sure they will euthanize it...
What should I do?
thank you so much,
Gen

Welcome to TSB...
Hoping some of our canadian friends see this soon and can help with medical options.:grouphug
It is advised to never make formula with pedialyte...
it is also advised to not use kitten replacer milk,
We recommend Fox Valley formula for sqs.
It is also advised to never feed pedialyte for over 24 hours, it is counterproductive.
Heat is good:thumbsup
I will private message some members near you...
thank you for rescueing the baby and finding help!
and again...welcome to TSB.

This works as a wonderfull temperary sub. for Fox Valley which you can order online.
The goats canned, fresh, or powdered and is much better for the little ones!
Goats Milk Formula
3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt
Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.
For the first few feedings do not add whipping cream
A big thanks to Jackie for this formula!

Could you post pics of the baby?
Get some good ones of the leg if possible.
How is your baby? :Love_Icon
You need to feed the baby every 4 hrs according to the 5% rule: weight of baby in grams x 5% = amount to feed in ml every 4 hrs (or 4-5 times per day) for a 5-6 weeks old (if eyes are open you do not need to feed during night time).
Have you given the baby any goat milk formula yet? This is a good place to start after rehydration and you can give sugar water formula (1 quart warm water + 3 tablespoons brown sugar) inbetween feedings of goat milk formula if needed.
Remember to store everything in the fridge and feed warm. Keep baby warm too by placing a heating pad outside and under half of the container in which you are keeping the baby. :thankyou :grouphug

Hey hey a quick word to say that I'm very happy. I think his leg is healing. Nature is so strong...
happy happy!!!
Can someone tell me what's the best plan to rehabilitate a squirrel?
I guess it's much better if he's with other squirrels hum?
thanks : )

Hello again,
Here's a video of the little squirrel.
His leg is getting so much better.
2 days ago he wasn't using it at all, it was all soft, now it just seems weak.

With FV formula he should improve even more. Give him time to heal. :grouphug :grouphug

it will be best to restrict his movements until his leg healed completely.
For injured/broken legs moving too much too soon - may result in complications.
If it's just a really bad sprain - it will, too, heal better with as little movement as possible
Don't let him crawl too much - keep him in an enclosed space.
(babies at that age should not be crawling everywhere anyway. In the wild at this age they all sit in a nest/tree hole and are not allowed so much as to peek out)

Thank you Astra,
Before I was taking him out of his box to feed him but he seems more happy now that I am feeding him where he is in the box.
Thank you all for your support!!!

Had a baby with a broken femur a couple of years ago. Vet said it takes 3 weeks for them to heal and by 3 weeks time he was back to new. They are amazing creatures!!!:jump

:thumbsup they instinctively know what's best for them.
Babies (and pray animals in general) need the small enclosed spaces (noticed, how they love to burrow and hide) - they feel more secure that way!

Hello hello all!
Flash news!
Iwonka is very helpful explaning to me how is rehabilitation should be done.
She will soon bring me the magical milk and a little friend for Sebastien.
I will keep the two squirrels for another 6 weeks and then Iwonka will take care of the last week with them in their new environment.
Everything sounds peachy : )
I'll post some pics or video once in a while.
Merci à tous!
