Hello Everyone,

My name is Scott Fields and I live in Florence, South Carolina. While cutting grass ~2 weeks ago, found baby squirrel on the ground below an oak tree in backyard. Mother did not come back for it. My guess is it was about 10-12 days old. Hydrated with gatorade 1 day. Have been feeding it canned goats milk since 2nd day. Do I need to add something or change to different solution? Seems to be developing normally, but I am unsure and need confirmation. Eyes still not open. Active. Weight is about 42 grams. Eats ~3mls Recently moved to 10ml syringe with nipple on end from eye dropper--afraid of aspriation. Concerned about diet. Please post recommendations. Thank you all
Scott

If you call in your order and tell him you need it quickly he'll be happy to oblige. He can ship to you regular post 3-5 days and overnight. He's very nice and very easy to work with.
In the meantime you will need to feed your baby a home-made formula, but please for the sake of the baby, do not feed this for more than 4-7 days. It's a great temporary replacer milk but it lacks certain vitamins and minerals that the babies need to thrive. This recipe will ensure that your baby will be well nourished until your order from Fox Valley arrives. Jackie (Jackie in Tampa) has graciously offered her temporary replacement formula recipe.
Jackie's Goat Milk Recipe
1 cup goats milk
1/3 cup heavy cream
1/3 cup dannon all natural vanilla yogurt

Mix well and keep in a covered plastic or glass container in the refrigerator. Replace after 48 hours.
Please note, this website has several links that still mention Esbilac and we need to keep these links active as they do contain excellent information so please keep in mind that Fox Valley is now the formula of choice for raising baby squirrels.

Your going to want to use a smaller syringe, a 1cc syringe is perfect. You can get these from a vet or local pharmacy.

:wave123 Scott:Welcome to TSB

You need to tweek your formula...
Below is the recipe for goat's milk formula. Pleace go to our forums for information on squirrel nutrittion, you can find a lot of information there.

***While waiting for the Fox Valley to arrive...

Temporary Formula for Infant Squirrels – The Goat’s Milk Formula

Because of recent manufacturing issues, Esbilac and other puppy formulas are no longer being recommended for squirrels or other wildlife. The formula that TSB recommends, Fox Valley Day One, is currently available online at www.foxvalleynutrition.com and www.henryspets.com. But those require shipping and this baby squirrel needs food NOW.

One of our senior members who posts as Jackie in Tampa uses an excellent temporary substitute, and it can be assembled from locally purchased ingredients:

3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt

Formula will last 48 hours in refrigerator.

Goat’s Milk
This can be purchased at natural food stores such as Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, and at most health food stores that sell groceries. It is a product for humans. Do not substitute commercial formula made for baby goats or other livestock sold at feed stores.

Goat’s milk is available fresh in a carton; evaporated in a can; and as a powdered milk. If you purchase either the evaporated or powdered versions, please blend them with water according to the package directions before using to make the formula.

Heavy Whipping Cream
This is found in small cartons in the grocery store near the coffee creamers and half and half. Regular heavy cream may be substituted if it is unavailable, but the heavy whipping cream has the highest fat content, and is preferred.

Yogurt
Yogurt has beneficial bacteria in it that soothes and settles digestion. Full fat yogurt is best, and a good choice that is very widely available is Stoneyfield Yobaby yogurt. However if it is unavailable, a low fat vanilla yogurt may be substituted. Avoid those that have artificial sweeteners in them. Vanilla and banana are both popular flavors, and the sweet taste of the yogurt helps to convince the baby to accept it.

It has been recently discovered that very small pinky squirrels may do better digestively if, instead of being given Fox Valley formula straight, mix the Fox Valley 50/50 with the Goat’s Milk Formula assembled WITHOUT the heavy whipping cream.

*It is recommended that when just starting to feed a new baby that the first feedings be made without the heavy whipping cream. This will give their digestive systems a chance to acclimate from mama’s milk to our substitute without the harder-to-digest whipping cream. Once they accept the formula and are eliminating properly, the whipping cream can be gradually added in.

When your Fox Valley formula arrives, please transition your babies to the new formula slowly, by blending the Goat’s Milk Formula with the blended and liquefied Fox Valley formula, increasing the ratio of Fox Valley with each feeding until you are no longer using the goat’s milk.

Hello everyone,

Did have one more question. Baby squirrel (Fernando) :) twitches while sleeping. Since I am new to this, can someone verify this is normal. Thanks

Do you have her on heat at all? Use a heating pad under half the container she is in?
Is that pic from the day you found her two weeks ago? Do you have a recent pic? How much does she eat at a feeding?

ok..from the pics and weight (42?), I would guess she is about 3-4 weeks now...(also looks like a girl, but would need a clearer pic....Fernanda?,lol). Still have a week before eyes open.
Is she gaining every day?
3ml should be fine feeding every 3-4 hours.

Twitching is normal :)
