View Full Version : Help! Infant Squirrel (WA State)

What has happened so far:

Yesterday I found an infant squirrel in my backyard. I left him/her there on the sidewalk and brought the dog and cat inside and just watched from a crack in the window. I checked back over the course of an hour and never saw mom/dad squirrel come back to get the little thing. He was still laying out there :(.

So! I couldn't stand it anymore, and put him inside a nice big box carefully. He is tiny, but very wiggly and seems eager to live. Then I left him outside and under the tree I thought his parents were nesting in (There is a birdhouse I -think- they are occupying). I watched a while longer but they never came looking. I never saw them and wasn't sure what to think.

I went back outside and searched the area to make sure there weren't more baby squirrels laying around. I didn't find any. I took this one inside cause I was worried he would die from getting cold. I believe he/she is a newborn cause he/she is completely pink, no fur and eyes are still sealed. I'll post a picture if I can.

I placed the baby in a box with a heating pad (on low) under half his towel and covered with a hand towel. : / Not sure it is warm enough but figured it was better than laying on the sidewalk.

I tried to make 'hydration solution' but had no way to feed it to him. He wiggled and made grunting noises and I tried to just gently put a drop into his mouth. I didn't want to accidentally drown him/her either so I finally just placed him in his box again :(. I'm not equipped to hand raise a baby squirrel.

I did try to call PAWs and left a message with them. Just not sure if they will be able to help me at all : /.

To make matters worse...I'm pregnant! and I mean REALLY pregnant. As in 5 cents dilated, 100% effaced, just waiting for labor to start pregnant! PAWs or anybody needs to come get him/her before I go into labor! I can't exactly smuggle him into the hospital XD.

Kare - have you gotten the e-mail I sent you with the e-mail address of someone that can help you?

Just Updating!

I haven't heard anything back from Paws. Bill is a little far away : /. My last labor was an hour and twenty minutes, har har har, so unless Bill can deliver babies I better stay closer to home >:3, haha.

Feeze is in Seattle. That's a little closer :o. Anyone have a number?

or if you know anyone right here in Everett or Lynnwood that would be for the best.

Meanwhile. Going to go out and get some pedialyte, formula and a syringe right now. The squirrel is still very active. When I open his box to check on him he squirms a lot.

Thanks for all the help! Struggling to care for him/her as best I can till someone can come take it. Here I've been wishing my little one out and now I'm begging him to stay in!

Ahh, I misread. I thought you said Bill was in Vancouver for some reason. Auburn is better.

Yes I just emailed him after I saw you sent an email. I'll call too if he's close.

Do you think he's willing to pick up?

I do not know, but I think if you explain your situation he'll be very understanding and do whatever he can to help you.

Ok, I'm off to the store. I'll check back here and my email when I get home.

Thanks again.

Jackie, yes, please send Kare via e-mail Bill's number. Not sure how she was planning to call him, as I only gave her Bill's email address.

Yes, 1 hour 20 minutes for labor is quick and I think they only get faster...

OK, I got Kare's e-mail, they have a place not to far from her 2nd Chance Wildlife center in Snohomish just east of Everett, I am willing to go get the little one, but can not make it until after 1:00 PM our time. And to one of her questions, yes I can deliver babies, I am a retired firefighter/paramedic and have done quite a few, mom and the baby does most of the work.

Thank you! That was very fast! I just got back from the store :).

Leiana says they are full, but Paws called me back. They wanted me to try putting him back outside, but nailed in his box to a tree. I don't think that's going to work though. I did it anyway since I was told to.

Leiana said I could also run it up to Survy (sp?). So I'll do as PAWs instructed and if she doesn't come get him/her in an hour I'll head up.

And haha Bill, seems your a man of many talents :3. I won't make you deliver my baby though =P.

DO NOT follow or contact PAWS again, if you send the baby to them they will kill it since Grays are not native to this area!! Call me.

Oh my gosh, I'm so glad you said something. That's so sad! QQ. Aww, and I'm pregnant so its made me all emotional.

What about Sarvey? I'm waiting on a call back from them.

If they do the same thing what do I do next?

Kare - do you think you can make it till after 1pm your time today?

Bill - Can you raise the little one or will you hand it off regardless?

Kare

I think I'll be fine. Just need to know he's going somewhere. If for some reason I go into labor before he's picked up I'll have to put him somewhere easy to find for someone. Hopefully my boy will stay in though ;). At least for a little bit longer.

Kare you now have full access to TSB, so you can send private messages, receive them and post pix. I am sorry for the delay -- I was transporting my half-dozen babies to my beloved squirrel-sitter, Nancy in New York:)

My daughters are: Aurora and Ariel. My husband is military and he has not chosen a name for our son yet. He's leaning toward Jacinth, or Xavaeir. :). EDIT: What I mean is that he's on the Sub and hasn't surfaced yet to contact me about names.

Bill arrived and has picked up -Flora-, haha. My girls had to rename her since they guessed he was a boy but we were wrong ;). Bill could tell.

Very happy she's on her way to a second chance.

I'm on my way to my midwife to be rechecked for dilation and to see if they are going to break my water or not. If I'm over 6-7 cents they'll break it. If I'm still at 5ish they might let me coast it out a bit longer ;). They're trying to keep me from accidentally having the baby at home =P. Either way, everything is good now and I'm ready for labor!

I am a WA state licensed rehabber in Washington. If you havent placed the squirrel yet, I will take him. I am in Vancouver but have resources around the state so if you need my help call at 360-713-1143 or jackie@squirrelrefuge.org. Washington does not require the euthanasia of eastern grays like Oregon, but it is possible that a large center like paws will not have the resources this time of year to care for a pinky.
