My lil Chewy started having labored breathing yesterday. he has some clear snot this morning. he isn't eating like he was and is just laying around. he is about 6 to 7 weeks old. my husband rescued them about 2 weeks ago. they were very dehydrated and starved. They were doing really good until yesterday. He looks so pitiful what do I do for him. My heart would break if he doesn't get better.

Welcome! We will need to know a bit more abut your baby. How much does he weigh? What does he eat how often and how much? What is he in and is he still on heat?
The experts will be along but this info will help them to help you.:grouphug

Please tell us what his diet consists of, what formula have you been feeding and how is it being fed. Could he have been aspirated durning feeding? What his (poops) are like. Has he been peeing regularly? How is he housed? Do you have any idea on his weight? The more history you can tell us the better we can excess the situation.

Put him up to your ear: do you hear clicking with each inhale and exhale? Wheezing? Congestion?
Keep him warm and be VERY careful when feeding him, as he already has stuff in his respiratory system and we don't want him to aspirate formula.
Do you have a vet who would prescribe antibiotics? Do you have anything in the house already like:
Clavamox
Amoxycillin
Baytril
Cipro
Bactrim
Sulfatrim
We can help you dose the baby squirrel if you are able to get any of these meds.

he eats about every 4 hours. thru a dropper abbout 7 to 8 cc's. i did start offering apple pieces and bannana and avocado pieces about 4 days ago. they love those. i let them suck the formula out of dropper. so i dont think he could have but i am not positive he didnt. i give them puppy formula. he poops and pees regularly. i have them in a box for now i clean it out twice a day. i am looking for a cage for them but my goal is to release them. i don't have scales but my husband said he is probably about 10 oz.

i have a heating pad under them i keep it on warm. so that they don't over heat. yes i can hear clicking when he breathes. i do have some Bromfed Dm Cough Syrup and I have amoxicillian. i also have some infant motrin should i give him some.

Wait for info from expert on dosing. He likely has pneumonia and will need antibiotics. Be sure the heating pad is under only half of the container so they can get away from it if they are too hot. Also, cardboard is dehydrating so a plastic container is best.
Puppy formula is not good for them now so I will find the goats milk formula recipe for you. Fox Valley is recommended and is less expensive than the puppy formula. http://www.foxvalleynutrition.com/main/home.asp
You will need to start using a syringe for feeding also. A 1 cc syringe is best and usually you can get one from a local pharmacy if you tell them it is for dosing meds to a kitten. Just say without the needle.

No cough syrup, amoxi can help but, can you get hold of a gram scale? An actual weight is needed on the baby in order to properly dose meds.

In light of the recent problems rehabbers have been experiencing with Esbilac formula, it has been decided that the best alternative is Fox Valley 32/40.

If you call in your order and tell him you need it quickly he'll be happy to oblige. He can ship to you regular post 3-5 days and overnight. He's very nice and very easy to work with.
In the meantime you will need to feed your baby a home-made formula, but please for the sake of the baby, do not feed this for more than 4-7 days. It's a great temporary replacer milk but it lacks certain vitamins and minerals that the babies need to thrive. This recipe will ensure that your baby will be well nourished until your order from Fox Valley arrives. Jackie (Jackie in Tampa) has graciously offered her temporary replacement formula recipe.

it is for human..
also need very legible 1 cc syringes without the needle to measure the medicine

no, they can stay together..
dosing a 70 gram sq with amoxy 200mg 5ml
7-10 days, twice a day
0.07ml
ml and cc are the same.
so 7 of the little teeny tiny lines in a 1cc syringe..
it's only a few drops basically.
:) are you following me?:poke

no -- this type of pneumonia is not contagious....hopefully someone will respond with the dosage for you; I don't trust my math anymore, and my book gives dosages for amoxicillin 50mg/ml,. Yours is 8 times stronger than that, I think :(.

I'm not familure with the plug in but if it's not just plain co2 steam which I suspect it's not, I would not use it as it would just cause more irritation to his sinus. Squirrels can be sensitive in that way.

Yes, liquid suspension lasts much longer than two weeks.
Worst case may lose potencency by just a little doesn't turn toxic or lethal.
As long as kept cool, should be fine.

so same amout of yogurt and goat milk just minus cream. is this correct?yep..
if canned goats milk it needs to be diluted with water 50-50 first...
it spoils in three days.
do not leave in metal can, it also spoils
I freeze just goats milk into cubes and thaw as needed and make formula {add yogurt and cream } after I thaw it!
formula is good in fridge for up to 72 hours...

69 grams for the age of this squirrel does not sound possible. I got a baby here that came to me like a skeleton at 5 weeks old and his weight was 100 grams.
other rehabbers can you chime in? I just dont want a bigger baby not getting the correct dose of antibiotics in this case. It could be life threateneing.

My dad is a pharmacist. He told me that expired drugs are fine to take unless they have mold. The most that will happen is that they will lose a small amount of power well after the expiration date. HTH.
