Welcome! KMR is NOT good for squirrels. Can you get goats milk? The best thing to use is Fox Valley which you can order online at http://www.foxvalleynutrition.com/main/home.asp

How old is the squirrel? Eyes open or shut? Hair on body?
Try a little apple juice to relieve constipation. As long as your baby is sufficiently hydrated. Good luck.

I had a good result with the apple juice too.
The first, you have to stop this formula (garbage) and push Pedialyte.
I would start with diluted apple juice and then full strength apple juice.

sueanne, you are here on The Squirrel Board asking us what is the best way to care for your baby squirrel. We are giving you the information you seek, based on the combined knowledge of rehabbers who have raised hundreds and hundreds of baby squirrels using these methods. If you choose to believe other sites on the net, we can't help you. The proven best method for raising baby squirrels is:
Fox Valley Day One for Squirrels: 32/40 for the first 4 wks of age.....20/50 afterward
Add Ultra Boost by Fox Valley if babies need to gain more weight
We recommend the goats milk formula while people are waiting for the Fox Valley to be delivered, because it cannot be bought in stores.
Esbilac and KMR are formulated for CARNIVORES. Fox Valley is formulated for Squirrels. It's really very logical if you think about it. :):peace Also, the parent company that makes both Esbilac and KMR changed their formulation a few years ago, and baby squirrels and bunnies started dying at an alarming rate. Since then, the company refuses to acknowledge that there is any issue at all with its product, and says that neither product was ever intended for use on wildlife. :shakehead

See where it says "quick links" in that horizontal bar under our The Squirrel Board banner? If you click it you can go to "Today's Posts." There are TWO PAGES of them! The benefit to a message board that is so busy is that we get new information really fast, and have the ability to spot problem trends really fast, due to just sheer numbers. Lots of successes here.
Rehydrate your baby with rehydration fluid, either the homemade described or commercial pedialyte. Give no longer than 24 hours, and NEVER mix the formula with the pedialyte instead of water.
Until you can get the correct food, the Fox Valley, use the goats milk formula given. Plain goats milk cannot raise a baby to adulthood because it does not have sufficient fat. However it is HIGHLY digestible and mixed with the other ingredients is a complete formula. The Fox Valley is better, but this is an excellent sub until you can get it.
If you continue using KMR or esbilac, your problem will be diarrhea. Due to manufacturing changes, they can't digest it very well anymore.
I really doubt your baby is constipated. He likely does not have enough in his system to need to eliminate any. Get him on the right formula and the poops will come.

Esbilac used to be suitable for squirrels (KMR never really was, too high in protein and too low in fat, but used to be OK) but they changed how they make Esbilac and KMR and neither is suitable for squirrels anymore, either causes bloat or really bad diarrhea.
Fox Valley is the best formula you can get right now for squirrels. I'm not a huge FV fan, but believe me, they have the best stuff right now. PetAG products are so unpredictable, one can can be fine the next causes massive diarrhea and bloat.
Definitely take the advice found here, there is some crazy info. out on the web, don't believe everything you read and vets sadly are often not knowledgeable about wildlife, so asking your vet what formula probably won't help.
Good luck with your little tyke.

You don't know how many times I've wanted to scream this out of a bull horn!! :pissed
I know we are here for the squirrels so we are told to cushion our tongues, approach gingerly, be diplomatic, We don't want to scare the newcomer off, yadda, yadda, yadda...
We want to help! Still, with all the combined experience, all the combined knowledge we have to offer, we can still get hit with that wall of opposition. We get debated, dissected, argued with, and too often ignored at the expense of the poor creature we are trying to help. It is very frustrating to say the least!! :soapbox
Your post should be a sticky!!

I don't think you can find the FV in the store.. :thinking Call them.. I'm sure they will figure out how you can pay them. :thumbsup
Have you started the Goat milk formula ?
I hope your baby is pooping now?
Btw .. how much does he weigh?.. How much and how often do you feed him?
For cats: they are squirrels predators. Your baby should not be in any contact with them. He/she needs to learn that a cat IS NOT a friend :shakehead

You won't find the Fox Valley at retail. It is available at:
www.foxvalleynutrition.com and
www.henryspets.com
I bet either of those folks (the woman at henrys is a TSB member) will be happy to work out a payment - both have telephone numbers on their sites and are actual human beings!

You can use regular fresh goats milk - and mix w/ yogurt and cream as described.
You can also use evaporated goat's milk, which will be canned; or dry, powdered goats mik. In both of those cases, you mix it with water according to the package directions FIRST, then use it in the recipe like you would fresh GM.

Hi darlin. You have a big heart to help your baby. It's NOT easy. Thanks to TSB, I've not only raised babies from just born to juveniles who bit the crap outta me, but become a licensed rehabilitator so I can help more critters. There ARE a lot of sights on the internet and I've looked at em all, then looked at formulas based on content of formula and what a squirrel needs to thrive. Know what? All the good folks here--AND in the Commonwealth of Virginia--AND the National Wildlife Federation are straight up with what you need to do to see your darling grow into a beautiful big squirrel. If you just can't scrape the money together to order some Fox Valley I'll send you some. You can mix it with your goats milk to stretch it if you have to. Sounds like your sweetie is finally pooping and that's great. Study the nutrition site. Please be warned that raising squirrels costs and if you are on a very limited income, maybe the very best thing is to let a licensed rehabilitator care for your darling. TSB has folks all over and can likely help with that if needed. We really do want to see another healthy happy squirrel grow up big and strong.

How is the little one doing? Would you want us to try to find a rehabber for you to get your little one to?
Sorry, just saw that Chickenlegs made that suggestion. Please let us know if you need our help finding someone.
These little ones can be very time consuming if done right, so not a problem if you feel you may be in over your head.
I remember my first squirrels, actually 8 babies at the same time, I didn't shower for 2 days, I kid you not....:shakehead :D Had no clue what I was doing, but I would finish feeding the last one, and the first one was hungry again.:tilt

I guess you figured out the measuring? It doesn't matter how large or small the "part" is, as long as it remains the same. In other words, if you want to use a Tablespoon, it would be 3 Tablespoons of goats milk and one Tablespoon each of the yogurt and cream.
I wrote it that way so you could make a little or a lot, depending on how many mouths you are feeding, and the concentrations would always be the same.

If you have a grams scale, weigh the little one daily. They should eat between 5-7% of their body weight. You need to feed every two hours round the clock, which means through the night too.:thumbsup
Can you post a picture of your little one? We LOVE pictures!
