View Full Version : help starving dehydrated 4 week old babys

I have 2 starving dehydrated baby squirrels the mom died 5 days ago had no idea there was babies. about 4 to 5 weeks old very near death. eyes closed have been rehydrating for hours 1 improving other one not so much. are on heating pad doing pedilite (spelling sorry). need more advice they are nothing but skin and bones.

Do you have FV or goat's milk? They may really need nutrition.:grouphug

all I have is esbilic on hand. scared to give them any due to still being very dehydrated.

You would want to use glucose in this case, to rehydrate them but it helps bring up the calories too. Pedialyte when they are starved is counter-productive, you can find glucose at the pharmacy, or if you can't get any then you may use a bit of molasses or maple syrup diluted in water. Make sure you offer it quite warm - mom's body temp is around 102-103F.
If you provide formula, the best thing to do when they've been starved is use the Goat's milk formula, it's easier to digest, and ffer it a half-strength to start with.

to my surprise they are still with me the little boy is so weak. have given them diluted food. have a vet tch coming I hope this morning to see if there is ant way she can give them iv fluids.

Please do consider a diluted version of the goats milk formula. Esbilac has changed their manufacturing process resulting in many babies dying of diarrhea, since it no longer digests properly, and this little one doesn't need anything else working against him.
