I received a call from my vet and they had a baby for me. When I arrived, they handed me a nwborn with a little cut on his back and he looks bruised on his sides. I'm thinking eternal injuries....then she tells me a lady rescued the baby from a cat. I brought him home and washed him off and put neosporin on his cut. Vet was afraid to giv him antibiotics because he is so small. That is my question to TSB experts. He took puppy formula from vet and he is sleeping now on a heat pad in a aquarium. He seems to act normal but only time will tell if there is any permanent damage.:thinking

Good question, try to post a picture so we can get started on age and weight
did the vet say if they hydrated the baby and for how long??

He's a newborn, less than a week old. They gave him puppy formula and I think glucose for hydration.

If you dont have any pedialyte you can make your own if not

1 teaspoon salt
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 quart water

as far as formula goes if you don't have any Fox Valley please get goats milk formula, you can make it.
3 parts goat’s milk
1 part heavy whipping cream*
1 part vanilla yogurt
I believe this is Jackie's formula.

Make anything you give him Hot, not scalding but a little hotter than you.
Do you have 1cc syringes?? and nipples
Chris Squirrels and More has what you need and info
also http://www.henryspets.com/
Hopefully some one with more pinkie knowledge will come on soon

I have FV but only for 5 weeks old and older. I'm out of the other. I'll lower the dosage of formula until I get other. I think its the best for him now since its for squirrels. He looks plumpy and round.

most times it is best to give antibiotic to any cat caught...it's said their saliva is deadly.
In pinkies baytril is a heavy...however...I would use it for three days as a precautionary..use yogurt in the formula with any ABs,jmo.
SMZ-TMP will be easier on the G/I, but will need to be given 7 days minimum.

call the vet back and ask for a 22.7mg baytril tablet..just one is all you need..$3
or some oral SMZ-tmp.
You'll need his/her weight in grams and we can help with dosing.:thumbsup
poor little pinkie...grrr cats.:soapbox

What Jackie said. I would also do the gm (I did gm/yogurt with Rose initially, then did gm/fv, 5050 until her eyes opened then straight fv, obviously moving gradually up to full stregnth with each change). Baytril is tough, but for cat bites, I believe it is the best choice, imho. What does this little one weigh?

He weighs 13.6 ...he didnt like me waking him up to weigh him.

Do you have a small rodent nipple? they work so much better for these tiny ones. Def. start with pedialyte (store bought or homemade). I did the fluids every hour initially until I was getting good results on potty, then slowly into the diluted gm/yogurt mixture (I did not use the heavy cream).

It is a combination of drugs also sold under the brand name Sulfatrim.

OK....I'm going to call vet and get meds and buy goats milk. I'm going to feed him hydration fluid before I leave. I'll use my new nipples i got from FV. He's sleeping well and moves normal. I hope he doesn't have permanent damage of any kind. I need dosages of meds if anybody knows. I have a list of meds but no dosages per weight.

Back with Baytril....free of charge...so nice of vet. She wants me to keep her posted as well with progress. Gave him fluids before I left so he's sleeping right now.

glad you were able to get meds...
some vets are the greatest!!:wahoo
adding yogurt to the formula will help the babies intestines to maintain good flora...baytril is known to give belly aches & diarrhea.
I use it in all formula, howeevr it would need to be used two hours either way of the meds..
be sure to give a little formula after the baytril, it is very bitter.

we're going to need pics when you get settled!:)
did you say a boy?

BamaHam

A bouncing baby boy....weighs 13.6....I'm going to mix his goats milk and yogurt to feed him. I guess I can mix it with FV formula or do I leave it out? How much Baytril do I give him?

Did the vets give him hydration before he came to you? If not, I would give a couple more of fluids, then start in with the gm/yogurt diluted at 25/75, working up to full stregnth (I would only do that for now, fv can be added in a little down the road. the gm is easier to digest.)

I gave him goats milk, yogurt mixture with some hydration fluid. I did see poop on his bedding and I got him to us the bathroom whn I rubbed his genitals. He's seems to be doing fine but first 24 hours are always critical in any emergency care. Time will tell.

I found my chart of meds and dosages....thanks. He's doing fine today, his color looks good, he poops and I think he pees, hard to tell whn that small. I use a small wet towel with warm water. I'm starting to think its a chipmunk instead of a squirrel. They look so much alike just a smaller version. Time will tell because they mature faster. Is 13.6 an ideal weight for a newborn squirrel? He had an umbilical cord still attached. I'm going to try to post pic with the help of my daughter and her Ipod camera.

Although it is said general weight at birth is 16 grams, Rose was 12 grams and I know she was at least 3 days old when I got her, so there you go. Glad to hear he is doing well. Use a q-tip to potty him, dipped in very warm water...works great!

Is Rose an E. grey? That was our initial thought of this one. Then we thought too small so maybe a chipmunk. We'll know in a few days.:)

Precious pictures! Theodore (that is what the girls named him) is doing great. He's a trooper....eating, sleeping, peeing, and pooping just fine. I've given him Baytril yesterday and today, and I put neosporin on the little cut on his back. I'll post again tomorrow. Thanx evryone.:Love_Icon

Theodore is doing fine. He is getting a little grey around his tiny whiskers and the tip of his tail. He'll be with me a week tomorrow and I'll weigh him again. I'm sorry I haven't posted anything lately.....working 2 jobs and taking care of hubby, 2 teenagers, 2 dogs, and 3 different squirrels is keeping me busy. I'll start my vacation in 3 days....I'll catch up on my sleep then. LOL If I don't go BONKERS first.:crazy :crazy :crazy :crazy

Today is not a good day. This mornig at 4 am I went to feed baby and he would not eat, lethargic, and felt hot. I think he is sick and has a fever. I tried to give hydration solution and he took about 5 drops and would take anymore. Now he doesn't seem as lethargic but still will drink. I put it in his mouth but he doesn't drink. I put a fw drops on his mouth and he only swallowed a little. I think I'm losing him. He moves around a little and has small wimpers. He just sleps in my hand and I feel helpless. I'll continue trying to give him fluids to see if he will respond.:grouphug
