So, I've been taking care of a little girl squirrel (Alfie is her name) for 3 weeks now. She was a very new pinkie when my niece and her friend found her after falling from a tree. My sister called me (I worked at a vet clinic many years ago and took in a baby squirrel that was brought in, she thought I might know what to do with it) and I took her in. I was pretty confident that I could take care of the baby, I hopped right online and found out what to feed, how often, etc. I'm a work/stay at home mom, so I knew I had the time to devote.
I also found an amazing cage on Craigslist a couple days ago for a great price and snapped that up!(it's the double level Critter Nation) I figured that after the squirrel was done with it I could use it for rats or just resale it.
Anyhoo, Alfie is doing swell, eating and using the bathroom great, just resting and growing. The more research I've been doing and reading here, I've just had one nagging issue in the back of my head that I've been worrying about. The pre-release stage. I know that I'm capable of taking care of her to that point, but I'm not able (or honestly willing to spend the money) to create the kind of outside pre-release cage that she will need. So I've been wondering, what the heck am I gonna do when that time comes?
Would I be able to find a rehabber that would be willing to take her on when that time comes? Is that common, for someone else to take over the pre-release phase? Is there anyone here who is in my area that is experienced and has the right facilities to do this?
She is only like 3 weeks old now, so she would be ready for the pre-release cage around mid to late Sept.?

Sorry for the long blab fest, this is just something that has been weighing on me lately.

Hey Anne! I replied to your post on my intro thread, but you might not have seen it. We used to live in Orange Park! Moved away about 4 years ago.
I could try to give you a call tomorrow, not sure if I'll be home much or not.
Thanks for the reply :)

There used to be a rehabber in Niceville that might be able to help. I'll look for his info. I'd check with the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refuge (http://www.ecwildliferefuge.com/) also. They release a lot of different animals.

I'll be back with more info if I can find it.

I'd offer to help but honestly I'm a flying squirrel hoarder. :D

Oopsy. Apparently the person in Niceville was banned so I can't pass along that info.

Check with the Emerald Coast Wildlife Refugee. They most likely have a list of rehabbers in the area, and the person I was looking for is probably on that list as well.

And the vet they use is St. Francis Veterinarian in Gulf Breeze/Navarre (who might also have some numbers for you.) That's Benji & Nibbles vet. :)

I've been posting new pics on Benji's thread. :D
