Hi there, I wrote yesterday in another forum, I have 2 baby squirrels, my vet says they are only like 1 -1.5 weeks, I've been very careful about not feeding them so fast, but this last feeding the one wasn't interested in eating, and I listened and she has a slight clicking sound... very quiet, but it seems to coincide with her breathing... I'm stressing out cause they are doing great otherwise. I called my vet and she said they are too young for antibiotics, and that I just need to hope for the best and do the best I can.

Can anyone offer me any other advice??

Thank you...

stosh is the best person to answer since he's in costa rica too.... he'd know what vets/prescriptions etc are available down there....

they won't eat for a number of reasons... dehydration is major ... so is warmth ...if they're not warm enough or the formula isn't ....

as for pneumonia ... i'll post a copy of a video that miriam has kindly posted which shows for sure what it looks like....

meanwhile if it is pneumonia then you will need a good vet and antibiotics...

I saw the video and I'm afraid its that sound but much quieter... I've spoke with 2 vets here and both said they can't give them anything.. I wrote Stosh and hope that I get a response as I may be able to get something at the pharmacy if he knows what it is..

you will need antibiotics as soon as possible ...like yesterday!!! if it's pneumonia ....

hopefully someone else can tell you the dosage/strength etc...

(do you have stoshs phone number? i'm sorry i don't have it myself).

if you could print out information from the squirrel board so that they understand there is a way to treat squirrles? maybe they don't know????

If you ca get Baytril (enrofloxacin), Cipro (a human equivalent of Baytril) or Sulfatrim (also known as Bactrim or SMZ-TMP) those are the most effective with pneumonia in squirrels. Unfortunately your vets do not know about wildlife, which is not unusual. Vets treat domestic and farm animals, not wildlife, in most places. I have given antibiotics many many times to babies less than one week old -- they recovered, thrived and were released.

Any chance of getting one of those medications from someone who may have them for a dog or cat?

I got cipro for myself once at the pharmacy? Its a different name but the same thing I believe. If someone could give me dosage?

Most drugs are over the counter here so if someone has dosages please tell me... thank you

Hi there and welcome. I'm sorry your little one is sick. I do not have dosages for cipro or SMZ. I'm blessed to have access to medicines from our wildlife center however there are quite a few experienced members here who will be on here eventually to help you. Keep checking in.

It would be helpful for them if you could post the weight of your baby. Do you have gram scale. Also whatever anti-biotics you have access to and the strengths of each so they can convert them for you.

In the meantime, if you haven't already got them on heat you need to do so.
Put them on a heating pad without an auto turn off. Place it UNDER 1/2 of the container you have them in. They need to be able to move on and off if they get too hot. Give them enough soft fleece or flannel fabric or t shirts to snuggle under making sure they are kept warm is important and that your formula is warm as well

Do post that information right away so the next rehabber can help immediately.

I haven't been able to find a heating pad anywhere... I've been filling a sock with beans and microwaving it and changing it every once in a while and they have lots of blankets. I just weighed her and it looks like she is approx. 60 grams.

Thank you..

Hon, can you get us any info on the drug? If your baby has pneumonia, Cipro is a fantastic choice, and we can help you dse it, and despite what the vet says, do this ALL THE TIME with no issues.

Hi everyone, just an update, they both woke up hungry and active this morning, I still notice a very slight clicking sound in the breathing, but its very very quiet and I have to put her to my ear to hear anything, it could be something like licking or something as he does make lots of different noises.

I spoke with Stosh on the phone and he is going to try and send me a package with some supplies and meds. It was so great talking to him, a wealth of information. Thank you everybody for be so involved, its really nice to have.

I will update if anything changes :)

Hola !
I just spoke with Sarah for 30 minutes and here is where she is:
>>>Post Office-she is trying to find the closest one so I can send ABs and Fox Valley, syringes etc. to a General Delivery address. I will send stuff tomorrow if we find a PO that will take gen. deliv.
>>> Both squirrels have a VERY faint clicking noise but not loud enough to hear unless you hold them to your ear. ??? Cruiser had the same issue 2 times and nothing came of it--but I am sending cipro anyway to be safe.
>>> she has been using a 1 cc with a small nipple that the VET "cut" the tip so it would FLOW BETTER !!!
I fear that they are getting too much ---too FAST .I told her I will send new sqringes and nipples and NOT to cut them, The flow will be too fast with their powerful sucking strength. Maybe a needle in the tip, but not to cut with scissors. Cruiser could pull the syringe handle down by mouth. I had to restrict the flow.
I am sending 14 days of FV for her two guys...and she will call NICK for a delivery.
She decided to keep them until they can be released around 5 mths. old. So we will; be seeing her on TSB OFTEN---I Hope.!
I explained that she should STOP microwaving the food-just heat the water and let the water heat the food.
I explained how to feed at a 45 degree angle UPWARD...never downward ...She understood.
She will be a GREAT new member..... HOOT !!She was HAPPY & Impressed at the speedy response and replies from TSB members. THANK YOU ALL for caring ....

Yes, it is right. Here is the best way I have found to dispense small amounts by syringe:

Pull up the correct amount of meds in the syringe.
Then, pull up some air - doesn't matter how much - in this case, just pull the plunger out to about .1.
Now you have a bubble of air near the tip of the syringe with the meds behind it against the plunger. You want to make those two things swap places. Here's how:

Turn the syringe so it is tip side pointing down and tap, tap, tap the syringe until the medicine moves around to where it is right next to the tip of the syringe and the bubble of air is behind it. When you dispense the meds, that air bubble will push all of the meds out.:thumbsup

I just sent some pictures to Stosh so he should get them soon. These are variegated squirrels typical of the Nicoya peninsula in Costa Rica. I will keep taking pics as they grow!

Ya -Hooooo
New Pics... Thanks Sarah....

Their colorations are VERY similar--I can tell them apart by the small white patch just below and in front of their ears.
Mickey's white patch is LARGER.

The Variegated squirrels in Costa Rica are different in each area of CR.
I hope we get to see even more variations of color as members join TSB from the Southern sections of the country.

Sarah--to get an accurate weight--you will need a much smaller scale. The 11 lb. scale you have is not accurate enough to determine weight --esp. if meds are being based on TRUE gram weight.
Great news that the "clicking" has passed. Is it audible if you hold them up to your ear? or gone completely?? I sent the meds just in case,
If the rehabbers respond that it will not be necessary to adminisdter the ABs,---save the caplet for future use

Yes I will try and find a better more accurate scale if I do need to give the meds, but I can't hear any clicking at all now. They are doing great today, I have separated them in their nest, they are on either sides of a pillow case as Minney will not stop sucking on Mickey and Mickey was getting a little sore, no matter if they have just eaten or are hungry, she's always doing it. Both little girls are doing good though, they can still cuddle, just not suck :)

I am new to this site, but in need of help myself. I have a 16 gram pinky that has started making the clicking sounds. He is still very active and interested in feedings however I am not sure how much he is eating since I am so afraid to drown him. I have a 0.5 cc syringe with a silicone nipple that I am using & I am very patient with his feedings. As for the possible pnue - I have on hand Ampicillian 250 mg/ml and I think I have some tablet form of cipro. I just need dosage for his weight please.

I just lost a little 9 gram pinky an hour ago and I am still grieving that tiny life loss. He too had clicking & visible bubbles from his nostrils. I held him upside down & wiped each time I saw bubbles. Aparently I am not feeding these little one correctly. So help is needed with both abx and feeding technique to avoid another life loss.

I have successfully raised 4 other baby squirrels, that built a drey in my yard & still hang out close by my house & my last one still comes to my front door for an almond or a pecan. So I have had some success, but I can hardly bear the loss of this last tiny little guy & would love help with my other pinky. Thanks!

I have a question for you, I am looking at building a cage for them as they are beginning to become active and right now the container I have them in is really good for nesting but they can't jump or move around much if they wake up. I would prefer to have the cage outdoors, in a tree or something. If you have any ideas I really appreciate it.

Also, they are looking to chew now so I'm thinking I can start to introduce food to them. What foods do you typically introduce first? And how do you go about weaning them off the forumla?
Thanks a lot.

Hi Stosh! Mickey and Minney are doing great, I picked up the fox valley yesterday and started them on it, thanks again!! I had a little scare with minney yesterday, she didn't want to eat any formula in the morning and in the afternoon she wanted a lot, but she had some blood in her mouth while she was drinking... I was very worried, and thought something awful had happened, but, thought I would wait until her next feeding before I stressed out and she was fine last night. No more blood. I think she must have bumped her tooth on something and maybe thats why she didn't want to eat in the morning.

They are doing great though, eating almonds (trying to get through the hard shell), bananas and another green fruit (kind of looks ilke an apple with white seeds in the middle), and they love them! I have some pictures on my camera of them eating and will try and get those uploaded today or tomorrow to post.

I am still looking for some insight on making a release cage?? Any ideas? Right now they are out most of the time, and in their nest box while sleeping, but they are up more and more of the day so I need to get something made for them asap.

Any suggestions would be great!

To train them to chew an Almendra...start with very small green ones. Look on the tree branches, close to the tips , where the new fruit grows, and find some all-green ones... less than an inch long. They are soft--easy to chew thru--but tasty. Then get some ripe ones. Purple or yellow.
Cut half the meat off, to expose the Hard Nut inside. Cut the tip off the nut--with a hack-saw blade--to expose the seed inside. Let Mickey & Minney chew out the seed. This way they are keeping their teeth trimmed down, by chewing on the hard nut. You should hear them scritch, scritch on the nut.
It's a BEAUTIFUL sound.Eventually they will learn to do it all by themselves.

So today was a big day, I've been trying to figure out what to do as one of the girls on our property has a dog that would love to catch a squirrel. She moved in a couple weeks ago, when I was going to start my release. So I held off, and today she left for a couple weeks so I feel now is a good time.

I let the girls out in the back and they made their way over to one of the almond trees, I've been hesitant to let them play in the trees because of the fear that I won't be able to get them back. But they played and played for about an hour (Minnie is much better at jumping around the branches, Mickey fell a few times, but made some progress), and at the end, Minnie was sitting with me and I called Mickey down as she was at the very top of the tree and she came jumping down when I called her :) Such a great experience! Next time I will take photos!

Just had to tell somebody ;)

Make sur thay have a water bowl or bottle outside --all the time--and change the water daily.

The girls are not on FV anymore. They are doing great, I don't see them drinking water and they usually just knock the bowl over if I give them a bowl (I tried the bottle and they chewed the bottom in 2 days, I also tried zip ties to tie the bottle, cause they kept knocking it down, they chewed the zip ties overnight...)But I think they get a lot of hydration from the coconut and vegetables that I give them. Like I said, I offer them water, but they don't really take it.

I haven't let them outside as much as I would have liked this week, we have some construction going on the property, so I have to be watching them closely, and when I put them in the tree they pretty much run 1 lap and then come down to sit with me... My only camera right now is on my computer so it is difficult to take it outside and get the shots. Here are some shots from lunch today though :)
(Most of the pics are of Mickey, she is much more cooperative with the picture taking, Minnie doesn't really have the patience ;))

They all are so cute at this age. I love how they hold their tail over their back.
One thinks it's a monkey hanging on that thread of a twig!
Beautiful babies.
Thanks for sharing the pictures.:)

I am always amazed at how our squirrels can support themselves--on then thinnest of branches...

WELL---2 years have passed...how are your girls???? still in the area???

I released my brothers--Claro & Oscuro in Dec 2013 ( see their link--below). Oscuro returned in April 2014 and comes back every day for breakfast. Claro returned in August for a few weeks but then disappeared again.
