So about a month ago, my mom got scratched by a wild squirrel on her foot and it drew blood. My mom had been feeding the squirrel for a month before that, so it would always be in our backyard. Before the incident , it started acting very sick. Getting very lethargic, slow, and would come to eat and fall asleep in the middle, or just lay there. We went to the doctor and he gave her a tetanus shot and laughed it off. Two days later, my mom put out bread, it once again came onto our porch and while in the middle of eating, fell into what seemed like a coma and slowly died. My concern is that , what if it had rabies? We live in BC, Canada and so the only main threat is bats but ive been SO SCARED. I realize this isnt a medical advice site, but to ease my anxiousness , what do you guys think it could have been? Because squirrels dont usually die randomly. It had been eating bird food from our bird feeder, which included sunflower seeds. And my mom mostly only feed it bread, along with the fact that Vancouver does not have much sunlight. MBD i suppose? What would be the symptoms? Or poisoning? This is really bothering me :/ ugh should have sent him off for rabies testing :( Thanks for your help!

squirrels don't carry rabies, so I wouldn't worry about that. As to why the squirrel died It is hard to say, Could be diet related or something else.

That's true, it was just frighting to see it die a slow death. I cant stop thinking about what the reason could be :thinking :dono

anyone else have any ideas?

could be so many things:
severe head trauma from a bad fall, brain tumor, secondary health issues from traumas, poisoning, raccoon roundworm . . . but one can only guess without autopsy
