Dear Friends..I am Priya from Kerala, India. I had a baby squirrel 2 weeks old. But he died due to bleeding from his bottom. I was feeding my baby squirrel with cow's milk using an eye dropper and he was doing good. But suddenly one day I found blood tinch along with his poop. I consulted a vet and he told me that he got infection and this is very serious and it can occur from the eye dropper which I used to feed him with. The vet suggested a pediatric medicine for him and also some vitamin drops. I tried my best to save him.I feel so sad that I could not save his life. He was so sweet.

The medicine the vet suggested for my squirrel for his infection was 'Discalator Paediatric Drops' half a drop each, two times a day(morning and evening is better). He also a gave a vitamin supplement named 'Zincovit drops' to be given 1 drop each twice a day by mixing in milk or water (mix it in the milk you feed him with). Be careful that both the medicine and the vitamin drop should not be given at the same time. Keep an interval of 30minutes or 1 hour between the two.

So friends, what I want to tell you is, Be very careful while raising especially feeding your baby squirrel. I dont want you to repeat the mistake I did, even unknowingly. Plz read the following. This may help you.

Bleeding from inside the body is a serious problem for squirrels, especially for the babies. This usually happens due to internal infection. Squirrels are very feeble and delicate, especially the babies. So we must be very careful while taking care of them. From my experience I found out the following.

1. Sterilize the eye dropper or syringe each and every time before u feed the baby. Boil water in 100 degree celcius the put the eyedopper or syringe and also the vessels used in the water. If you want, sterilize it after feeding also.
Never feed them without sterilizing:nono

2. Feed them with small quantities (10 to 20 drops or as he drinks)at 1 or 1.5 hour intervals. Otherwise the baby's body gets dehydrated.

3. Keep note of the quantity of milk the baby drinks usually. If he starts drinking in lesser quantities than before take him to a vet. This may be an initial symptom of any disease or infection. Dont take any chances.

4. Squirrels need warmth. I think 35 or 37 degree celcius is required. Take suggestion from a vet.

And the most important of all, if you find squirrel babies that have fallen, keep them safely beneath the tree where you got it from or any large tree nearby and wait. People say that sometimes the mother comes and take them back. It is the best thing that we can do to them. No one else can take care of a baby than its mother. If you dont find the mother even after a long time then only take the babies. Take them to a vet (A vet who deals with wild animals or a zoo vet is better) as soon as possible and do as he says.

Take good care of the babies and I pray to God for their good health and long life.:wave123

I am so sorry that you lost your baby squirrel. I am even sorrier that you did not find and read this board earlier. We probably could have saved your baby's life.
First, you would have learned to NEVER feed cow's milk to a squirrel.
Secondly, to use a syringe to feed, not an eye dropper.
Thirdly, all the care advice for babies is given here in the baby squirrel section's thread. Heat sources and many things are talked about-a lot of information on what to do when you find a baby. All this knowledge and no vet bill!
All these things we know because we are a large loving group who constantly learn from each other and the many mistakes that have been made in the past.
Take the time to read through the many posts in our baby section. You may find another baby squirrel someday and then you will be prepared to raise it safely.
Baby squirrels are really very strong. Falling from the nest or tree may have caused the internal bleeding.
