Please help!
I found an adult squirrel in the yard, labored breathing, wet from rain. I put in cage i have on heating blanket on low. (its super hot and humid out today, do i still need to do this) looks like its been in a fight, with some head trauma. Let me pick it up with gloves on, seems like its dying. What do i do to keep it comfortable if it is. (at least its safe from predators at this point)
Please advise ASAP!
Thanks

Thank you for helping this little one.
Yes, if it's in shock, it needs warmth.
Where are you located, we may have members close to you that can help?
Remember, warm, dark, quiet.

Hi Nancy,
I am outside of Ocean City NJ. I have rehabbed a pinky, who i raised for months and loved. My gut tells me its too late for this one, but at least its safe until it passes. I'll keep you posted on any changes.
Thanks

I totally agree, it's safe now.:shakehead
You can give her infant ibuprophen if you want, that will help her with the pain. Since she is an adult, you can safely give her 0.12 of the infant ibuprophen, that would be just a couple of drops.
In the meantime, I am just going to see if I can find someone close, just in case....:grouphug

OK, I just sent you the dosing chart through email. Just in case you think her weight may be different.

If you have CHILDRENS ibuprophen but no infant's, you can just double the dose (yes, the infant is more concentrated than the children's).

My baby just turned 18! No kids anything around here!
(do have esbilac, and pedia lyte! LOL)
daughter will be here soon, should i use a pinky nipple?
i am shocked its still alive, it moves some then rests, then moves some then rests.

Sorry - you look so much younger...

I would use a syring with no nipple - the adults tend to chomp down...the children's ibuprophen comes with a dropper top but it is fairly good sized.

ok, gave it to her, she barely moved when i slowly put it in her mouth but she did lick it!! :)
I am shocked she made it this long. Do i try pedia lyte? or should i just let her be for now?
Thank you for your help!

I would let her be for now, give her an hour or so of just rest.
Then definitely give her pedialyte, she may be thirsty.
Actually, now that I say this out loud....since you just dosed her, see if she wants hydration. (Pedialyte)Then let her rest.
You can dose the pain reliever again every 4 hours.
I sent out some SOS's to Jersey members....just waiting for them to come on...:dono :tilt

Thanks!

Hope you saw my edit, in red...:D
Just make sure that she has her head either to the side, or upright, never laying on her back or head tilted back when given anything by mouth. I know you know this....:)

well. eyes are now open! She just took 2 syringe of pedia lyte greedily. Her head wound doesnt necessarily look new, she has one pea size round wound that seems fairly new, but some scarring to her head which may have been scratches that look older. She is very calm, and now resting again. She has lasted far longer than i had expected her too. I assume just liquids for the first 24 hrs, then worry about solid food tomorrow if we get that far?

Do you have any formula there? You could give her pecan flavored ensure, which may actually be easier to get than FV for today....Yes we will take one day at a time, but for now, any liquids you can get in her that are also nutritious would be a good thing.:thumbsup

i have Esbilac on hand, i know for babies that isnt good, should i do that for now instead of the pedia lyte?

CritterMom

I would do a bit more pedialyte - getting rehydrated is important. The ensure is a good idea and is easily available - plus they usually like it. If you can dump a bunch of old t-shirts or sweatshirts in so she can snuggle into them and hide, and cover her container for some privacy.

ok, will get some ensure. She is now sitting up with her tail across her back on all 4's instead of on her side!

:wave123
what antibiotics do you have ?
human or animal?

do you have betedine or iodine?
ideally would dilute with tap water and flush wound first...a syringe works well for this if you have one.

yes neosporin can be used if wound is not too deep, also can you post pic?
any chance you have silver sulfadene cream?

:bowdown your doing great, Thank you btw...

please take that pic if possible, one of us will call you

for now rub some log cabin syrup on her gums...just a dab will work
use a qtip if you are afraid...it will help raise her blood sugar levels rapidly
do not let her get too warm, just barely want to feel heat under her, just a small area, fist sized..
you can place twoels between the pad and the container too soften the heat...

also tell me what amoxicillan you have?
is it expired?
the label will say what mgs it is...
