I'm a bit new here, and I really love the looks of this forum. A quick question - is it normal to have a ton of orange tailed grey squirrels in the backyard? I suspect one mated with a red squirrel farther away, came over here, had a family, and then made a bunch of red/grey squirrels. They look kind of like this -

Thanks!

Hi welcome!!!:wave123
I have some with red tails and patches off red on their hind quarters, no red squirrels here.
I don't think they inter mix anyway

Squirrel species do not intermix, SSM is right. If your reddish looking 'greys' have black pads on their feet they may actually be fox squirrels (Sciurus niger), which are mostly grey and orange. Grey squirrels (Sciurus carolinensis) can have very reddish coloring sometimes, but they don't mate with fox squirrels OR red squirrels (Tamasciurus hudsonicus).

(Not trying to be a showoff here -- just being factual by identifying the different squirrel species. It's like tigers, leopards and lions are all big cats but they do not mate with each other. :))

Thanks for the responses! I'm thinking we do have some fox squirrels in our yard. I have always wanted to see other squirrels aside from the greys. They're so cute, and the number is multiplying very quickly although I do not know who they're mating with.

Looks like a nice fat little fox squirrel to me! Not an expert but that is all we have here.

I have a couple regulat Grays with blonde/reddish tails.
Almost normal around here.:D
Every now and then, we get a completely blonde one. They're kind of pretty.
