I'm in Alaska, Anchorage area. Are there any rescue groups up here? I've looked online and not found any. I just posted to craigslist and already got two people offering to take them. I don't want them to feed some guy's snake!! One may be injured, back legs didn't see to be working but I'm not sure about how they develop. From the pictures they seem to be 5-7 weeks old maybe? I currently have them inside in a box. Not sure where this will go in the AM. Any help will be appreciated.

Okay, the one does not have use of it's back legs. they both have what I'm guessing are fleas and one person from craigslist said she raised 3 and told me to use cows milk - I've read everywhere absolutely not to. The injured one has to be put down, right? what do I do about the fleas? I cannot have fleas in my house!!!

Hi and welcome...
thank you for rescueing them and looking for help!
You are absolutely right, cows milk does not have enough nutrition for baby sqs...
idea is to, warm and hydrate them first, how long have you had them? are they in a small container with tshirts or fleece as bedding?
is their container half on a heating pad set on low?
Are you willing to help them until a safe rescue group can be located?

You can use Dawn dish liquid to bath them, they must be dried well, with cotton, towels are dangerous as they can snag and twist toes and limbs causing injury. No blow driers please.
Keep them warm, sqs body temp is a few degrees higher than ours.
Be sure that the container is covered so they cannot get out.
The little guy with the injury, do you have infant or childrens Ibuprophen?
do you have a scale that will weigh in grams?
Ideally they need to be hydrated, if you are not sure, gently lift the skin between their shoulder blades, if it relaxes slowly, they are okay, if it stays tented, you can use a syinge or eye dropper and pedialyte
here is a homemade recipe for it
1 quart warm water
1 teaspoon salt
3 tablespoons sugar
mix well and keep in fridge for upto 72 hours...
HOWEVER, pedialyte can only be usd for 24 hours, then it becomes to rich in sodium and counter productive.
The recommended emergency formula is a goatsmilk based recipe.
You will need human grade goatsmilk and 1 cc syringes...
do you have a feed store or pharmacy to get the syringes from?
I will get a link from the emergency forum with alot of general info...
http://thesquirrelboard.com/forums/showthread.php?t=21626
I will start poking around for help up there.
Thank you

Hey thank you! I've gotten several replies on my craigslist ad. I did bathe them last night and kept them inside in a box with warm material. (they both had lots of fleas) I did give them some fluids, recipe I got from squirrel rescue site. Stimulated urine. Fluids again this morning. The injured one is more flighty and harder to feed. Currently they are outside hoping mom will come back. Do you have any advice on how to choose the best rehabilitator to send them with?
With the injured one not being able to be released, do you suggest keeping it around for the social benefit of the healthy one before putting it down?

what I suggest is an anti inflammatory..
do you have any steroids, metacm Rx {NSAID} or OTC ibuprophen?
sometimes the spine is injured and the swelling causes nerves to be pinched...SOMETIMES...
if this is the case,. allowing the swelling to reduce will support circulation and his legs may come back...
it's a slim chance..
but it is possible...we have seen this many times...
remember, you can only euthanize once...
does the little one appear to be in pain?
what Rx meds do you have on hand? and OTC?
heat will feel comfy and sooth some pain also...a heating pad or a rice filled sock nuked in the micro for 20-30 seconds will help him feel secure and eliviate some pain too.:grouphug
did you call the zoo?
have you ever thought about rehabbing them yourself, with our help of course...:Love_Icon

I do have childrens IBU. 5 mg per tsp. if you can dose me, I'll try it. Dh is adamently against us keeping them in the house and we can be pretty cold up here still. I have a couple ladies willing and experienced with it or so they tell me. It's not that I wouldn't like to do it myself but I have to be realistic too. I have 4 kids - almost 2, 4, 6, and 8 who I'd have to keep them away from and take care of as well. There's a reason I don't have 5 kids or any pets at the moment! :-) The one phone number is to a fax machine. I'll try the zoo but I'm pretty sure they will tell me to let nature take it's course.

If someone wants to guess a weight we can help with the ibuprophen.
Anyone who has the chart for INFANT ibuprophen - the childrens is HALF the strength - in other words you want to double the dose on that chart...

mitababe:poke wow you are a busy girl...4 littles!:D
can you post a pic?
crittermom, does she have full access yet ya think..
i know fireweed is over ten hours away, but she will know the most if we have to guess...
a pic would be wonderful..unless you have a scale that weighs in grams..that would be better!:)
Do not give these babies to anyone that uses cows milk...they absolutely are not the right person!
You can give them this website so they can make change.
there are web sites that swear by it...:nono
scalded milk and cows milk do not have enough nutrition...:shakehead
glad you knew better!:bowdown
do you have a syringe that has legible lettering on it?
the smaller the better!

aha! the injured one weighs 65 grams. Finally put that little diet scale to good use!
So new development: I know where the nest is, it's been used in the past and we just watched 2 more babies come out. One fell out - about a 20 fall. He landed on his feet and is running around okay. The two new ones are running around today like we've seen others in years past. They will climb up our pants. I put them with the two others from yesterday and they just run around and play. The ones from yesterday are not running and playing, just curled up.
Do I feed them all? Put the lethargic ones back in the nest, feed them first? I can't get to it to see, I could poke it a bit. I'm not sure how I'd get them in the nest but I could get them up closer to it. It's in a bird house on the post on my porch. Too high to reach. I could put them on the porch. Right now they are on the ground under the porch. The porch sits almost a full story above the ground. Is that clear as mud??

if so,
1 teaspoon equals almost 5ml
if 1 teaspoon equals 5mg
so 1mg/ml
dose is recommended on the low side to be 10mg/kg
dose would be 0.65ml
that is alot of yucky meds, but it will work.
Please make sure you hold him upright, do not squirt anything down his throat, let it leave the syringe slowly, angled up toward his mouth roof.
If he will lap it , good.
Go slow, we do not want to aspirate him.
do not lean him back like a human baby, head up, tail down, be gentle, he is probably in pain,
Pain indicators are pinched or pleated ears, ears plastered to head, teeth griting/chattering, head down tucked in..
dehydrated indicators are spiked fur and skin tenting.
He will need a small drink of plain water after the medicine, TY!:Love_Icon
If you could find a rehabber, all of them are probably motherless if they are out of the nest and you do not see her with them.
Please try to hydrate the first two that are lethargic...
do you see any wounds?
are they warm?
thank you for helping them, they are too young to be without you.
Were you able to post pics yet?
If not you can email them to me and I can post them.

Is it possible to place them in a safe indoor place, I am worried a preditor or the cold will kill them.
Tell DH we will find them help soon. Thank you, keep the covered and dark and quiet..
please not under the porch OR back in the nest...they need shelter and safety.

I got the dosing wrong on my bottle. I have two with the same concentration here. 100 mg per 5 mL. that should reduce the amount of medicine he needs.
Now the three are gone and the one left is the injured one. A lady here wants to come see the nest. Hopefully she can see it tonight but we still cant get to it.
I apologize, in the midst of this one child had to get a eeg done (2 hr test) which required her to have 4 hrs of sleep last night so she'd be sleep deprived which means I am too!
pictures - I did get a couple yesterday of the first one. they are still on the camera.
If you could refigure the IBU dose... thank you. How often can doses be given in squirrels?

for 65 gram sq dose is 0.035ml
ml and cc are the same
this can be given every 4-6 hours
thank you, please keep us in the loop.
I will still post pics for you...would rather the lady take them all if they are too young or in danger..
