We have a squirrel who (we think) feeds from our bird table. We see it often, and think it must be taking the food as the table is picked clean within hours of heaps of seed and peanuts. The real mystery is the disappearance of the large blocks of suet mealcake I have been putting out on the table. They are roughly the size and weight of an A5 paperback book and dense. When I put them out they will be pecked at by the birds, but in the morning will have disappeared. I do not see how a rat or a squirrel could carry one from the bird table in just its teeth, and how could it move while trying to hold a relatively huge block in its small front paws/claws? I would be fascinated to know the answer!

:Welcome to TSB! You've just been granted full membership access so let's see a pic of this Herculean squirrel :D !!

Seriously, it's amazing what grey squirrels can drag around with them. They are determined little creatures and if it's worth stealing they will take it! Either that or you've got something larger at work; I know you don't have raccoons in the UK, but what about a large raptor...owl or hawk? Deer, even?
