I just got a call about a fawn laying in a field with a dead mother close by. Babys ear were curled so I quickly got her rehydrated and she is now up and walking.
I do NOT know what to do with a fawn....and need all the help you good people wanna throw my way.
I am willing to drive to get her to a proper rehabber but that entails a different state close by. Maybe Minnesota or South Dakota??
What to feed??
How to keep??
Please help.
SHe has had about 18 oz of pedialite....and has had one really good pee.
Shes young...belly cord is still attached.

Goat's milk formula might be okay to start. What do you think?

Here's what the rehabber I asked said...
If possible get goats milk if not get calf or lamb starter. This is a powder you mix with water available at most feed stores. Warm whatever you get slightly. The fawn may not take it immediately but keep trying every so many hours. Once they get going they will take up to 4 oz. every few hours. Make sure that the fawn urinates after a feeding or two. Sometimes you have to use a warm moist cloth and wipe it on their but to get them going. The mother will lick them there every so often in the beginning to get them started. Get the deer to a rehabber if possible.

I have lamb starter.
She just took about 4 oz of pedialite....sucked it down like she didnt stop.
I was waiting to hear from someone to see if its ok to switch to formula...and now I have my answer.
Next feeding I will try the lamb replacer.
Shes sleeping right now.

She knows a lot about fawns and has raised quite a few herself. I was just looking at a thread where she helped Nancy out with a little one.:D
Here's the link, they look close in age.

Well now she is up walking around....she pretty wobbly....well...not so wobbly anymore....just all sprawl legged.
I wish I could find a way to age her....but like I said the cord is still there....so she can't be too old.
Well....I will wait for Mandie to call back and in the meantime....get some formula ready.

I was just reading what I sent you. Did you see that you have to stimulate them?
See how much I know, they look so big, I guess I wouldn't even think of that....:dono
And to provide a heat source, and a large stuffed animal for singles....awe.
AND their eyes start to turn brown at one week.
The umbilical cord drops off in the 2nd week.

I hadn't gotten that far...but yes...now I see that info. Once again...you're the best Nan!
Her eyes are still blue...she can make sound but its really tiny. She just now took a bit over 4 oz of lamb starter....and had one heck of a pooh!!
She has NO problem feeding once you get it in her mouth....then she nurses really well.

lol....oh yeah....but not much. 3 cc is as big as I have!
No....I also raise sheep....so I have a supply of lamb starter and nipples that fit a 20 oz pop bottle. Shes about the same size as a newborn lamb.....so the nipple works good. She was sucking so hard on the bottle she collapsed it...lol

Awe, I'm so glad that she is taking right to it.
So it looks like you are all set with the formula, bottles, and nipples.
Now how many rehabbers can say they are ready for a little fawn....:dono
So glad that she found her way to you!!! :grouphug

Well.....I got lucky. This is my first year farming wool. I just bought 60 bred ewes and one ram 2 months ago so I also bought everything in case I had bottle lambs. Its lambing time right now...so yes....this little fawn got very very lucky. Same people that found Flash found this fawn....and called me right away.
One problem with fawns is that they imprint very easily. That's about I can tell you, sounds like you are doing everything just right. Nick at Fox Valley makes a fawn formula. I would only worry if she gets and continues to have diarrhea. BTW, ewe's milk is the bomb! Better than goat's milk!

Well I have a boat load of ewe milk....fresh or powdered replacer.
I can see what you mean about imprinting easily. She follows me around....and is VERY comfortable around people.
Im still searching for a rehabber...I know I could do this but I so want her to make it and I think being raised with others is her best shot. Im in a pickle because since my *beep* state doesn't have a single rehab....im the best chance shes got. If I call Game and Fish....she dies.
I don't know what to do....I do know that my moral law will out weigh any man law any day!

OMG I couldn't be any greener with envy if you had come on and announced you found George Clooney in a field and needed to know what to feed him!! She is beautiful.
Some years ago I happened on a blog - maybe linked from Cuteoverload - folks in TX and their Jet. Hubby driving to work sees deer dead on road and it just doesn't look "right." He goes back to find a half born fawn who he takes home. He and wife contact deer rehabber who was filled but agreed to help them with info, given that they lived adjoining a big protected wildlife area and had a perfect release situation. Jet bonded strongly to them and to their male Great Dane Drake and even "nursed" off his chest. He grew up in the house and then in the yard, coming in at night to sleep with Drake on his bed. I remember his favorite treat was long carrot curls from the carrot peeler! When he got older, a deer herd moved in to the area and he sort of joined them by day, continuing to come in at night for a long time, a full grown buck sleeping with the Great Dane. The herd became very friendly too, seeming accepting them because Jet did. He hung with them for several years, sometimes disappearing for a time but always coming back. He disappeared for good after Drake died, but his old herd continued to visit and eat carrot curls!
You can totally do this...
Yeah, and people still get that "Look" and ask us why we rehab!

So far so good....she just sucked down 8 oz of formula...:thumbsup
I did more reading on the info that I was provided and Im going to guess her at around 2 weeks. The cord is about to fall off....and her eyes are just starting to turn brown. She can pee on her own but still needs to be stimulated to pooh. ( and boyyyyy can she pee!!) She weighs just over 13 pounds....and I will also need to start adding a dish of dirt to her diet....I guess it helps their digestive system learn to accept vegetation...( please correct me if this is wrong)
I will be heading back out to the farm soon and checking lambs....and also meeting Dr. Motter there to help me vaccinate and band and dock( I hate this part).....sounds like a perfect opportunity for her to get looked at by a doc. I'll just bring her with me! :D
Here is a pic of her just now....standing just after eating. She using her legs much better today. Sorry about the bright eyes....I had to use the flash. Its rainy and kinda dark today....good thing we found her when we did....one heck of a thunderstorm blew through here late last night....trees down all over the place.
