View Full Version : HELP! Terrible fall!

This morning I saw MoMo fall from high up in the tree. He hit the ground with such an aweful thud. By the time I could get to the gate and open it to see, he ran to the nearest tree. I saw him climb up and cross back over his home tree. Looked like he was favoring one leg. He didn't come all the way down to his treehouse.
A little while later I saw a squirrel go from his tree to one on the other side of the fence. I thought it looked like Mo, but couldn't be sure. That squirrel looked at me the way MoMo often does when he recognizes me, then went up the tree and started to cross back to our tree and FELL AGAIN! He hit the ground just feet from me, scrambled up the nearest tree and I haven't seen him since. I can't be sure the second falling squirrel was MoMo. I'm afraid he could be in shock or concussed or have internal injuries.
Anybody know what I should do? Is there some good way to coax him down?

If he will take a nut from you, you can try that. Even injured, it is not easy to catch a squirrel. Have a small carrier ready, as well as heavy gloves and fleece blanket. Hope he is ok.

He may have been hit by a car and either physical or neuro injuries are causing him to fall, normal adult squirrels dont usually fall from their tree :(
Put a short trail of tempting foods leading into a carrier or live trap with the best prize way inside the carrier.Do you have a squirrel-friendly vet ?

If it was MoMo --the second fall--I sure hope he's O.K.I get upset when my TWO inside guys fall 6 or 7 ft...
Good Luck with the capture...

can you set up a hav-a-hart with his favorite foods?
or watch - if he goes into his nest box, plug the entrance and take it down with him inside (if that's possible)

MoMo seems fine.
:thankyou
I can't believe it. He came down on his own, ate a nut & some veggies, buried several beans and almonds, drank a lot of water, came and sat on my knee and acted like nothing ever happened. :D No limp, no odd behavior. Unbelievable! I know that first fall was him for sure because I was watching him the whole time and spotted his bald spot. It had to be at least 35-40 feet and when he hit the ground it sounded like a log hitting. But now he's acting completely normal and showing no signs of injury.
This is very encouraging news to a worry-wart dad like me, to know that my boy can survive something like that unscathed! I've been sick at my stomach all morning.
Now if only my Daisy-girl would come home! I haven't seen her since I chased that big cat away 3 times yesterday. :dono I think she may be in heat, so that may explain her absence. We shot the cat twice with a plastic BB gun. (I shot myself with it first to make sure it was safe...stings like the dickens, but no damage.) Last I saw her (Friday night) Daisy was doing that butt-dragging thing that dogs do when they have worms. At first I thought it probably meant worms, but then I thought maybe she's in heat and trying to leave her scent to signal potential suitors.
Anybody know how the mating behavior thing works? Does the girl move in with her fella, or does he move in with her, or do they do a one-night-stand. Does she go back to her own nestbox to have the babies, or raise them at his place?
Just a check-in.
MoMo doing OK?
