Hi everyone, it's been a while, way too long, just been time challenged and fell into the facebook trap too, lol.Andi has been well, those who know her she will be 9 in July. But something is wrong, I noticed she only ate 2 mushrooms yesterday. This a.m. had usual avocado breakfast but did not come out when I came home for lunch, or after work, and hadn't eaten anything else.I got her out of her bed and her left eye was white goopy and a pea sized swelling under it on her cheek. She refused all food and water, did lick an oreo a few times ( not a regular food but one she loves ).I can tell she hurts, she wont let me touch the swelling. Rubbed some rescue remedy on her nose , head, feet and ears ( so she'd wash herself and unknowingly injest some )
Bug bite ? She has no teeth other than the two bottom teeth right in front. They stay short as she uses them for scraping foods. How much Benedryl would I give a fat 2 lb squirrel, and what kind- liquid/childrens/ capsule/tablet / ? Any ideas how to get it in her ? I am hoping it is a bite and not a tumour :( If no improvement will have to try to get her in to a vet tomorrow, iso her and get a look. It will not be easy, she is a mindreader and right after I started thinking about it she got all suspicious, hid from me and squealed, noises I have not heard in YEARS, noises she made when she had teeth and I would trick her monthly into a carry box to go to the vet to get her maloccluded teeth trimmed, she would squeal the whole way there :(
I am very worried, and like I said she will be 9. She has gotten so sweet, loving, affectionate and mellow in her older age, and trusting, I hate to see her afraid, she can tell I want to examine her :(

Children's Benadryl. 2 lbs is 907.18 grams. Dosing would be as follows:
900 grams - 0.72cc's
910 grams - 0.73cc's
920 grams - 0.74cc's
Is she drinking water?
Can you post a pic of the area?
White goopy? Like white tears? White tears mean pain. Or goopy like mucus?

Kat, you said she has no other teeth other than front two lowers. Is it possible that while she was eating something that was a hard or sharp it may have gotten stuck in her gums and then gotten infected?
How does her breath smell?

Thank you everyone:thankyou She weighs 2 pounds, Milos Mom thanks for the dosage ! Have to run out & get some childrens benedryl, then run her to the vet will have to knock her out to get a look in her mouth. It is the white pain/stress tears :( The rescue remedy does seem to help some with that. Her eye seems okay so I don't think she scratched it, her breath has not been wierd, so I don't know.My poor baby :grouphug :Love_Icon

If she is nin pain, you can give her infants Ibuprofen

I dont know the history on this girl, but it sounds like she is a senior girl. No teeth? Not sure if they had been removed due to her being old and having tooth issues? When did she have teeth? Like how long ago? Could she have a small piece of root left in the gums that finally festered up and now she has a huge abcess? Abcess is VERY painful. She may need to see a vet. best wishes with her. Hopfully we can all get this figured out.

Pappy, what would the dosage be for the ibuprofen ?
Wonkawillie, she had mallocluded teeth from an early age, would get them trimmed,I think it was 2005 she contracted an oral infection which was horrible. She almost died, it lastd months, she would go in for steroids, fluids, antibios a couple of times a week. All her teeth fell out one by one until only the two front bottom inscisors were left. She uses them to scrape her food and gets a lot of softish food too. What saved her life was a pharmacy which compounds medicines, they made baytril into a cream so I could rub it on her ears, it took 2 weeks and she was cured.Has been very healthy other than a couple of uri's since then.

if there is infection in her mouth/sinus, you usually smell it.
Kat would know this from prior abcsesses.
I too think a vet would be best if possible...just to be safe.
If it is an infection in the root area, it needs intervention, I thought same thing as you all..there is that possibility.
I would get some metacam into her for inflammtion and swelling, gentle relief. vet always used baytril for deep root tooth abcsesses.

Just got off the phone with Kat. The vet saw Andi. She has an abscess, he did drain it, gave her some pain killers and antibiotics. Kat & Andi are at home.
Kat will be on later this evening at some point to give more info/details.
Keep them awesome TSB healing thoughts and prayers coming...we know how well they work!!

that's a first for me..I have never heard of NO MOLARS...all her teeth fell out..omgosh..
that was a nasty infection, suprised she lived thru that, wow.
I fought an abcseess infection in Rocky for almost 6 months before we were able to pull a tooth, but that is frightening to think about.
Glad she got to the vet!
Thanks MM for update...
I know she is going to feel better though...:flash3

Wow everyone, what a day. Well, her mouth was all swollen inside, poking around he must have burst the abscess cuz then there was blood and the swelling went down significantly. He gave her fluids, an injection of baytril & a little pred, and then one of medacam:nono UGH. I was like :soapbox and he said it was just a little pred and she should be okay:shakehead
It's not like you can just go to any vet, he is my former boss and is willing to do anything for her, but regular vets get no training in wildlife medicine :( He happened to have an extra tube of transdermal baytril so I didn't have to wait to have some shipped, and gave me 5 oral syringes of medacam, which I hope I can get in her. Also got some info on better antibiotics from my lifesaver Milo's Mom, & Jackie, and LI thank you for your voicemail SO MUCH ! Didn't call you back cuz after I got her home and settled I went to bed.Have to go to work now til 10 pm UGH.
Jackie yes all her teeth fell out one by one, she was sick from March til August, it's literally a miracle she lived. She started out a fat 2 lbs and lost a pound, half her weight, her fat probably helped save her life, she would only eat watermelon. Today though looking in her mouth I thought I saw some molars, I was like WTH is that and he thought maybe roots?
She is quiet, sleeping in her hammock rather than her bed ? and slept last night under a blankie rather than in her bed ?
Pointy, thank you for the hugs:grouphug
JBtartell, lol, I don't regularly give her oreos lol.But I like to have a couple of " extra special " tempting treats when I NEED her to do something, or trick her into a travel cage, etc etc.Oreos she loves, or a piece of reeses peanut butter cup or those cheese cracker/pnut butter sandwhich crackers. She loves avocado but these are even more tempting cuz she rarely gets them.
Have to go to work now til 10 tonight.I am in a zombie state, flat, no emotion but fear. This happens when she is sick.During that march til august illness I lost 11 pounds myself just from worry.I know she is not out of the woods yet by any means, I feel like I could throw up.
Will give update tomorrow.Love my Squirrel board:Love_Icon Have to start hanging out more here and less on stupid addicting facebook:bowdown

Kat, worried zombie :(
Just came home from work and Andi was sitting there eaing some watermelon. It's the only food I put in her cage since her mouth is so torn up, don't want pieces of whatever making it worse, the watermelon hydrates, cleans and flushes the kidneys, and was the only food she ate during her Last Big Oral Infection Sickness. Was so thrilled to see her eating it, even if only a small amount.Do not have work tomorrow, can spend the day with her, and try to get the metacam in her. And reading the Squirrel Board.:)
Kat, who will probably be able to sleep tonight because of watermelon:tilt

LOL Milo's Mom, I live 5 minutes away from my work, it's one of the reasons I chose this place to work.I get an hour lunch so can come home for 50 minutes in the middle of the day, let my dog out to pee/play, give Andi lunch, or whatever. When I left my vet job I had 5 newborn squirrels whose mom died from hit by car, so I looked for a new job only in the immediate area, and took the one with the longest lunch break.LOL. You can tell what my priorities are and clearly by my paychecks it is not money:thinking
When I got up this morning Andi had eaten at the the remaining watermelon from last night. She slept in her bed, not some wierd random place which was a good sign. When she heard me she came out for her normal avocado breakfast, and acted famished, she did have a little difficulty, but was able to eat it all, I made it a little mushy with a spoon for her. Then offered her a peanut butter cone, she only licked a small amount off the top, but that is right where I had a little pool of medacam ;)
She then went back to bed, she is mad at me , growled at me, and is suspicious because of the vet yesterday, letting her nap a little but will have to get her out soon to get that Baytril on her ears.Even mad, she can hardly resist an ear rub, so I am confident it will go okay, and she will begin to forgive me.There is slight swelling still, but very slight, thank God I was able to get her in yesterday, and that it was Saturday and not Sunday ! Only Emergency Clinic is open on Sunday they are not wildlife friendly at ALL.

Yes, left a message and he'll get back to me . Boy she is famished, but still just giving her soft foods, afraid to hurt her mouth.Came out and rode on my shoulder this morning for the first time since the vet trip, guess she is starting to forgive me, she is still on " suspicion alert " though, went to the back patio for a nice sunbath.
Now off to start Ellie's thread, :jump although will prolly have to do in chapters, have to go to work soon UGH.

Update on Andi - Swelling still down, she is eating and drinking, but I can tell she doesn't feel 100% . Vet did not want to switch her to the ( flurfenacol sp? ) he doesn't stock it & didn't know that it was appropriate for what she has. Will try Clavamox if a change is needed but likes that she has always responded well to Baytril and had no side effects).Upon examination of the fine print on the Baytril pen I got the other day, it was 5 days past it's expiration date ! It should still be okay, but he ordered another to be sure, that should be in today or tomorrow.
I'm so anxious for her to be " normal " again, telling myself not to worry that it will take a little time to cure such a bad infection. And reminding myself that the really bad one took months. One thing I don't like is the nasal snuffing/sneezing thing. I keep thinking of Squarlet, didn't she make nasal noises with her odontoma ? Going to have to try and find her thread.
