My male is about 7 wks and was pooing and peeing fine until yesterday i noticed he was really swollen beneath his penis above anus.i do stimulate him and he will poo but not pee.he is in pain i have soaked his behind in a warm bath twice for about 2 or3 minutes.I've tried massaging downwards on the area.I stopped feeding formula just in case and hes been drinking pedialite and water.I'm very worried it is big and soft and affecting his back legs.there is no vet here that will see him but they gave me a number for a rehab but they r gone on holidays.any advise would be appreciated.

Nancy, I can post it.

Please send your pics to me ad_astra81@hotmail.com

also, in the meantime, could you please describe what and how often and in what amounts you are feeding him.
Sometimes, when underfed they start suckling on themselves (If that is what the problem is), but, of course, could be other things.

So, describe the above and our experts will try to help you:grouphug

WOW, I'm not sure what this is, it doesn't look like bloat. Let me contact some other members that may have some ideas...:thumbsup

Here are photos.

Sugarsmom, I am going to copy what you shared with me, so that our experts (and I am not an expert) will read it.

Also, please describe what you feed him (what formula etc), how much per feeding and how often per day.

Have you ever seen him suckle?
When did this start?
How did you notice it?

it's not bloat; i have never seen anything like this before, either. I would switch to plain water instead of Pedialyte right now -- he doesn't need the sodium because that causes water retention. I wonder if his bladder/urethra is blocked? I will send my vet a copy of the pic and maybe he'll answer us quickly!

I have no idea..
without feeling it etc and knowing the onset duration etc..
I have no clue..
things that come to mind, but by no means am I even suggesting...:shakehead NO,
just ideas..
blockage
hernia
tumor
I do not see red so would not think abcess, but could be, is the area hot to the touch?
internal injury...
if losing use of legs, whatever it is, ...it is laying on/pinching a nerve..and creating paralysis. This could be temporary or NOT>
I SAY WITH ALL MY HEART< YOU NEED A VET> there is not one person on the board that can positively identify, diagnose and help advise treatment.
I would be concerned..
how is his demeanor?
I would also be leary what treatment you use..until you have a better idea what is going on..
damn...poor baby sq:grouphug :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug :grouphug

Hello everyone, the blister lump on his belly leaked out all this clear fluid. As he was being dried, more liquid came out like a pee. I think it is a urine track blockage. Haven't seen him pee lately. It didn' t smell like pee though. He hasn' t been suckling himself, there is no indication of this. They are being fed esbliac 4 x per day noemally. The one in question has been getting some pedialight because we thought maybe constipation?
Also mineral block and vegetables. 5 cc per feeding. He was VERY relieved when it leaked.
:D
Don't know what else to say except thank you very much for everyone's help

are you saying it was urine?
from his urethra?

pappy1264

A blockage wouldn't cause that (it would be up higher, the belly would be very round and hard). He was pooping with that like that? Are you stimulating him still?

It didn't leak from his penis it seemed to seep out of his skin. I can't see a sore or opening it must be very small. I just asumed it could be urine but it had no smell. Before it broke it seemed like a big water blister. I just gave him water about 3 cc. He seems to feel much better but im conserned it might come back or maybe get infected(the skin is very thin now). I guess we'll see if it fills with flid again. He will poo but not pee when stimulated. His poo is fine looks normal and plenty of it! Still worried, any other suggestions would help.thanks.:D :dono

If it looked like pee but didn't smell like it, it was serum. Sounds like a seroma. But what caused it?

Sweet Simon's Mommy
05-29-2012, 10:29 PM
it does sound like a seroma, but they usually develop from a surgery or an injury, was he ever injured in anyway? Did he fall, how did you get him?? I am thinking, he wasn't peeing because there was pressure on his bladder stopping him. Or there is a blockage and he is peeing into himself which created this balloon.

I'm not aware of any injury he seemed fine but it could be possible. I found him 2 weeks ago we tore down our old barn and found them in some insulation that was in the roof.which is probably why the mother didn't want them back. Last night before bed he was all wet because this keeps seeping fluid now. We where able to see the tiniest little hole where its coming from. And now his poops are very soft.im not shure what to feed him this morning. Maybe some watered down formula. Will post back after feeding. Thanks for any further advice. If there is a blockage in his urinary tract what could be done for that?

This is very strange. Any type of blockage in the urethral tubes would keep urine from getting that far. I really think if at all possible, this little one be seen by a vet. But the pnly way to know if it is a blockage is an ultrasound. Depending where it is (and what is causing it) sometimes they can put a catheter in (and even stitch it in to hold it open for a while). But some blockages that will not work (such as a narrowing of tubes. I know, I lost a baby this way.)

is he regaining leg mobility?
thinking you could use a taught DARK sheet as bedding, easy to monitor urine out put.
is he active? lethargic?
are there sibblings?

sugarsmom
05-30-2012, 08:06 AM
Yes he is being active now. Legs are normal again. I think the swell affecte his legs.he is eating like normal and not biting anymore. He has a sister and brother both are in great shape. But this keeps leaking fluid and he's always wet down there now. I will recontact my vet to see if she will take a look at him. If not I'll try to find somebody else.

What Has the Vet Said???
Do you Have a appointment yet? :dono If he is Blocked time is critical. Vet really Needs to be Consulted. (Be sure to take a copy of the Picture so Vet can see what was going on.)
Could this Baby a Hermaphrodite? Can you mark a spot where the Liquid is leaking from?
His tinkle looks really small for his age. Does any one see this also?

One thing that will help all your little ones is to get some Fox Valley formula and not use the esbilac much longer.

good point Stosh , I missed that.
Yes Fox Valley, the Esbilac has changed its formula a couple of years ago and squirrels don't do well on it any more.

Is this fluid accumulating in his scrotum? It looks that way in the picture. That would make the penis looks small if the scrotum was swollen up around it. A severely swollen scrotum will cause lack of use in the back legs. A blow to the area could cause a seroma, so will some bug bites. Like a hematoma except no blood vessels were broken. Keep the hole open as long as it is draining fluid, and maybe it will gradually heal and resolve on it's own. Keep the serum cleaned off since it can scald the skin. The little guy looks old enough not to need stimulating to relieve himself anymore. When I found my little girl, she was between 4-5 weeks old and was already going on her own.

Same here.
So happy she was connected to a rehabber. What a wonderful service you all provide for those who care enough to want to help the squirrels :)

And it's especially gratifying to read when a rescuer is kind and thoughtful enough to surrender their animal to receive the help of someone with more knowledge, connections, and access to vet care when they have already bonded with the critter.

What a selfless act of love Squirrelfriend. :Love_Icon :bowdown

Praying for the best outcome possible.

It appears to have been a seroma...he has a bit of a UTI probably from not being able to pee with the pressure from the swelling...I have him on Baytril right now and we may pop into the vet tonight to grab more meds and have him looked over.
The seroma itself is completely drained and he is active and wrestling with his brother and sister...he is eating well.
Sugarsmom did a great job raising them all the siblings are healthy...and FAST!:D
