Meet Ozzi. He is about the sweetest, most loveable guy I have ever met! I found him in a park late July last summer alone, scared and dehydrated. At first I t hought he had an injury to his leg, but later inspection revealed that he has a deformation of his front leg.
Now what to do with Ozzie? I could keep him forever, it wouldnt hurt my feelings a bit to have him for the rest of my life. But to be fair to him, he deserves more than a cage. I am wondering if anyone out there in "squirrel land" has ever had experience with a deformation like this. Will he make it if I do a soft release? Is there a sanctuary for sweethearts like Oz?
I need advice. I want what is best for Ozzie!
Please help with any suggestions.
Pictures are attached, I hope they come through.

Is the leg missing or is it curled up?

Can you give us a little more detail about his front leg deformation, please? It looks like he has it curled up, which would be normal. Please provide as much detail as possible.
Thanks!!

Ozzies front right leg is curled up and has just three little toes (no toe nails). It can not be straightened. He does not use it at all. Compensates on three legs.
It was hard to get a picture of it.

Do you keep him in the cage all the time or does he get a lot of family time.

In the first picture on his left hand where a thumb would be is that a purple round nodule. It looks like he is missing a toe on that side as well.

I also see lots of corn kernels, do you all feed corn to your squirrels? I never do, thought it wasn't good for them. Sorry, not trying to derail the thread, he is a real cutie! Wish I was closer :)

His left leg is fine...4 long toes and a "thumb". Picture does not do justice to the deformed leg. Ozzie does not like the camera.

His family time is "me time". I am the only person Ozzie is not scared of. We have had him since he was 3 weeks old and I am the one and only person that he will climb on or play with. If anyone else is around he doesnt want to come out and play. He is unique to say the least:crazy
