I know that I'll eventually have to get a bigger cage, but I was wondering if this cage is too big for a first cage. The little guy is 6-7 weeks. I was told the bars are 3/4 inch apart. Will that be too big?

Thanks for your response!

me myself personally think it is too big and ideally you want the bars only 1/2 spaced, little arms can get caught and they can hurt their teeth chewing

The bar spacing is a bit too large. 1/2" is what is generally recommended. :thumbsup

I put mine in this cage on its side, didnt want it to tall, they can fall and get hurt, they are in a nest until they are 10 weeks or so in the wild, they get more space with us but need to be watched and not given too much room , they can get hurt
The one on teh top is what i started them out in.

you first need a big sterlite with holes drilled around the upper edges of the bottom, and all over the top, sterlite should be of the clear, not colored type for visuals/

2) the second container will be a simple small hamster cage

3) then a small finch flight cage until they are 9 weeks'ish

4)the a bigger cage that can be rolled outside

OOOh! Good release cage pic, Jackie! :thumbsup That is what is on my mind these days! tinfoil

I concur with the others that 3/4" spacing is too big. :oldwise At 6 weeks, you have plenty of time to pick a larger indoor cage and make/purchase a release cage.

Babies can hurt themselves in a cage too large, but adolescents & adults can hurt themselves in a cage too small. This is my baby cage and my indoor adult cage. My adult cage is XL (approx 5'X3.5'X3') so you could go smaller. :)

Treeman, where did you get that adult indoor cage? I love it!

Thanks, pappy! It was a great investment and I have been very pleased with it. The only drawback is that the roof overhang adds about 3" to the width. That prevents it from fitting through a standard door so I can't roll it onto the porch. :( The cage comes with a divider and can be split into 2 smaller cages. I use shades on the bottom half to prevent pacing and I bought one of Jake's fabulous nest boxes. My Spicey loves her little home! :Love_Icon

I purchased it from Lionsco Pet during their Christmas sale. They have an excellent selection and very good customer service. However, it is available elsewhere so I would Google the brand-name to check for best price.

What a great resource. I have not had the occasion to rehab little squirrels, but with all these great resources, I wouldn't hesitate. Thanks for sharing.
