Does anyone know approx how long rut lasts? I have an MBD (Oliver) and a releasable (Barney). Both have been in rut since very late Feb/very early April. We are in Florida if that matters and I am running low on peroxide and bandages :dono
Barney was extremely ill with mulitple issues as a baby and was WAY behind in survival skills. His cage mates have been free since Thanksgiving! Just when he was getting the hang of being a squirrel we were cursed with rut.
They are in seperate cages and I change shirts between cleaning each one but Barney still smells Oliver come cleaning time. I bring Oliver's giant cage inside evry night while I clean out Barney's cage. (been to the chiropractor twice this week)
I know I can't start Barney's release until he is out of rut.
I recently had to have Oliver's bottom 1/3 tail amputated as he had no feeling in it due to the nerve damage from his fractured spine and paralysis when he first arrived. ( he was fed oreos and honey for 4 weeks by the people who originally found him on the ground as a baby) He had it chewed down to the tendon. I'm torn about having him neutured since he's already missing his tail. I'm afraid if I have his you-no-whats removed he'll become top heavy and spend the rest of his life doing a head plant....kidding! I think once Barney is released, he will be OK and we can revisit the possibilty if neccesary down the road. He is NOT the one turning into Hannibal Lechter at the drop of a hat.
Anyhoodles....sorry this post is running so long.:dono I guess I'm just hoping someone out there can tell me how long rut may last. I'm guessing mid-July but hoping I am overextending the time. Also Barney is not eating as much as he used to...(22 different veggies and fruits are rotated and offered ...) His coat is starting to look dull and scruffy. Hoping for some advice here....hope someone can help!
:thankyou
