HELP! I live in Chicago near the zip code of 60625 which is Lincoln Square/Budlong Woods and I found a teenage squirrel with his hind legs broken.. We found him on California and Summerdale on our way home from grocery shopping at 8PM on 5/14. We watched him carefully as he just stayed by the trunk of the tree unable to move.. when we came back with a box, he was crawling with his two front legs towards a busy street... luckily we got there in time to rescue him from being roadkill. Poor thing. He is now in a box, with fleece blanket, and no food or water. We have no mode of transportation other than a taxi, bike, or transit train or transit bus.. we called 311 for the city of chicago, and they said they would send animal control center to retreive him.. but we are worried.. are there any wild life rehabbers in this area of Chicago that can heal a broken leg on a squirrel... please email me ASAP.. siemprevero77@gmail.com! Thank you!

Hopefully some one will come along that will be able to help you locate a rehabber close to you, as I an concerned that the city may take the little guy and dispose of him due to his broken legs.

In the mean time please keep the squirrel warm with either a heating pad or take a few bottles filled with hot water then slide them into a sock and place them next to the squirrel for warmth...... wrap him up in a warm shirt or fleece if you have it.

Please keep him contained in a small cage or box so he does not jump or move around a lot until a vet has a chance to look at his legs...... this will help start the healing process. Does his leg look red or swollen at all?

You can also give the squirrel some homemade pedialyte to help hydrate him while you have him over night......... here is the recipe.

Homemade Pedialyte
1 cup warm water
1/4 tsp salt (teaspoon)
1 Tbsp sugar (tablespoon)

Thank you all, I kept him warm last night with a fleece blanket and called the (847)842-8000 or (888)FLINTCREEK for the FlintCreek Wildlife Rehab at 9PM after retrieving him at 8PM last night. Oringinally I call 311 for the City of Chicago Animal Control Center, but they couldn't tell me exactly to do with him and said they would call me in the morning. So, I search and search on the internet for an hour... and finally found a place located in South Chicago that did wildlife rehab for squirrels, but only the answer machine picked up. Luckily, the website offered enough info for me to know to put him a box, with a fleece blanket, to keep him warm in a dark, quiet place... and not to feed him food. I stayed up with him all night, giving him a small amount of fluid 1cc since he looked dehydrated because of his skin.. but he wouldn't drink. He looked like he wouldn't make it thru the night, and sure enough, he passed away at 8:30am and I am so sad because the Rehab location called us at home exactly an hour later. Then ACC called 2 hours later. I was already reluctant to give him to ACC originally, and was unsure if they would connect him with FlinkCreek Wildlife Rehab for us. He is now buried in a small place in our garden.. poor thing. It was a first for us trying to save a squirrel, and we don't know if we did it more harm than good.. or if we had a car, who would of taken him at such a late hour... Does anyone know of any wildlife rehabbers that live in Chicago that take animals in at an emergency care level? We would love to know, so that we are more prepared next time to get the care to these animals when it's life or death. Thank you for any suggestions!

You did exactly as you should have - you gave him a safe, warm, loving environment for him to pass. It is highly unlikely that a rehabber could have done anything more than you did.

Thanks for helping this guy:grouphug
