Hi and help!
Stella woke up from her late nap just now and has vomited several times.
She eats HHB's and boo balls made with HHB's. She gets a variety of veggies (although we go thru "tough love" stages and she has been limited with the veggies and snacks lately.
About 5, After grocery shopping, she got into a bag of corn, dug thru the husk and got a piece or two.....she also got into a small cup of coconut oil that I had set aside to make a new batch of balls. She probably got about a teaspoon. Other than that, she has had nothing but her blocks and balls. Ive been with her all day.
There is nothing in her vomit...it looks and smells like her food.
Right now she is pancaked on her favorite chair and does not want to be held or touched.
I gave her water and can make the homemade pedialyte.
Beside hydrating, can anyone tell me what else to look for? Anything that would give me a clue that this is more than just a bad reaction to one of those things she ate?

ok...lets add diarrhea to this.....she is clearly woozy and is not putting any weight on her "bad" foot. (She has always used it, even though it healed crooked).

Coconut oil would make anyone feel sick and would also cause loose stools. Hydration is very important with both vomiting and diarrhea. Not sure about the foot, but I am sure experts will be along soon!

if she eat a teaspoon of coconut oil that would do it .
It is very rich , even when I give mine a piece of coconut it is very small piece. Don't give her anything but water let her tummy settle. It will go through her in a day . Only give her block and banana for a day after to help tighten her back up.
Then after her stool gets harder, you can go back to veggies. If there is an expert out there with a better idea they will let you know, this is just what I would do.

thanks
I figured out her foot issue was because she has diarrhea all over the underside of it...thats a relief.
She has vomited a few more times. Her stomach must be empty, because it's now very watery and a little foamy.
I just learned that she HATES the homemade pedialyte, but she is drinking water.

Water is best anyway on an upset tummy. Poor baby... maybe she will NOT steal coconut oil again! Yeah right!
Glad her footsie is okay!

Im extra nervous because Ive never had a problem with her except for her extremely picky appetite.
I suppose its normal for her to be worn out, but she is sleeping very unsteadily. Her eyes will not completely close and her breathing is weird...not labored, just weird. She gets up every few minutes to potty...I think it hurts because she moans a little.
Should I stay up with her thru the night?
Dumb question, I could never sleep with her feeling this way! Ive rescued two others over a 10 yr span, but Stella has reignited my passion....Ive even gotten a catagory 1 rehabbers license (Will have it in my hands as soon as Im inspected)
We love her so much.....she is the light of our house and lives. My world will fall if anything happens to her.

Keep hydrating her. If I'm not mistaken somewhere on here there was a similar problem and it was discovered that coconut oil is NOT good for squirrels...now to find that darn thread...:shakehead

Still up with Stella... She is up every 15 minutes or so with diarrhea...vomited two more times, but just pure water.
She takes little sips of water...Are little sips ok for now?
I'm so worried...it's making her so weak and tired.... Her little legs are trembling so badly.

You have to keep pushing the water. With vomiting and diarreha, they can dehyrdate really fast.
Let me put out an sos to some other members.

I just wanted to highlight this section so the people that I have alerted to this post, can see the part that concerns me.

Thanks!
We are still awake...almost 10 hours of diarrhea. She looks exhausted... She looks awful and skinny. I thought I was losing her a few times because she would sleep with her eyes partially open and was so weak.

At this point, since we know what it is - and ANY oil in that amount would do this - you give mineral oil for constipation - I think that you SHOULD give this little one either a couple drops of immodium or a couple drops of kaopectate. You need to stop the diarrhea.
Add probiotics via yogurt or Benebac, available in paste and powder form in any Petco type place. Look in the hamster stuff.
I would be giving as much rehydration formula as I can get her to take.

That makes sense
She is throwing up all the liquid she takes in... I think it's making her not want it

:grouphug doesn't matter...you must be in charge,,, go slow,
making her eat and drink is what you have to do.:grouphug

Thanks, I'll be tougher with her!
She's having little episodes that I would call tremors .... Not as stiff as a seizure and she doesn't lose focus... Maybe her body is in shock? Poor little thing wants to sleep so bad

Maybe some flavored Pedialyte Jackie? Do you think her electrolytes might be out of whack? Poor baby! Her little body has taken a beating. All that vomiting and diarrhea on top of it! :shakehead

This is not a suggestion to try without the experts weighing in. I'm just feeling sorry for the little dollie..

Make a rice buddy or get her on some low heat.
Look at the first page of what I sent you. Supportive Care: Maintain body temperature

I'll do that now... I've been holding her all night .
Should I stay home from work? It's a 4 hour shift?
Also, should I hold off on a bath? She is sticky and stinky, but I'll wait if it will stress her out too much.
Thanks all.... I love this board!

If you are able to stay home, you and she would probably feel better. This started last night around 9:00. I think the first 24 hours are critical....and remember to push the hydration.
NO bath, the less stress the better, if she will allow, just wipe her off if you have non scented baby wipes, or even a damp cloth...only is she will allow and she is not bothered by it.:)

I wrap the sq and the rice buddy together in fleece when i am working with a challanging situation...keeping everything warm, sq and fluids is best advise ever...
it burns calories to maintain body temps, so we try to compensate to expedite healing.
Everything being warm is so important.
I think you are doing great...
I do not want to add to the heart ache, but coconut oil is part of a fade diet that died. I would seriously research a better block and try to stay with what is on the healthy diet list...what we know to be safe and correct.
sending good vibes...

you mentioned before sh eis a picky eater, can you tell us what her normal diet is ??
msriri
05-01-2012, 10:38 AM
She is settled in her favorite chair with blankets and a heating pad underneath. She is still only taking drops of water, but she is keeping it down. We slept for over an hour with no diarrhea. She is exhausted!
Her regular diet is HHB picky formula and boo balls (hence, the coconut oil). She likes the balls better and eats about 5 a day along with 1 or 2 hhb.
The picky formula has large pieces of nuts and sometimes she will dig those out and leave the rest.
I started making the balls out of hhb instead of Kaytee and she likes them better. I will certainly leave out the coconut oil from now on.
Her veggies are very mixed...I manage a restaurant and have free access to the produce :).....she loves avacado and endive..other than that she gets different lettuces, different squashes, peas, broccoli and occasionally apples and berries.

Just to clarilfy...she is a very picky eater and this week has been a "tough Love" week, so not many veggies for the past couple days.
She has free roam for a few hours to all day most days so I dont have a lot, if anything, sitting out. I just happened to come home from grocery shopping and she was getting in the bags as I was putting it away.
The oil was out because my next task was making balls and I had it in a little dish to microwave.

Tough love means that you give her plenty of veggies and block....
Tough love means no sweets, nuts, junk from our plate.....
I think I would cut back on the block. I believe that it suggests two per day. If she is eating the boo balls made from the HHB's along with the HHB's, that's a lot.

Will do. Just balls maybe because they have Fv in them?
Im trying to get her to eat something... She nibbles and I can tell she wants to eat, but then she drops it.... I've tried fv, ensure, peas and squash, balls and block and crackers which she loves. I don't want to leave her, but I'll go buy whatever she needs.

A lot of squirrels love watermelon, especially if they are dehydrated....:dono
Oh please don't let her read these words..."I'll go buy whatever she needs..."
You may have a list waiting for you when you get home,
and it won't be for food.:D
Maybe something like this.....:tilt

That's awesome!
My husband loves her but I've really pushed the envelope with her, lol. She rules the roost here and she is FIRST with me! I think my son is truly jealous also, but both are understanding about where my heart is.
She is sleeping a lot and crawling off the heat but I'm getting Fv in her one drop
At a time.... Going shopping too because there's not a lot here that will be easy on her stomach and that she likes enough to force on her.

Stella was up and around this evening and so hungry! She ate FV, pumpkin, artichoke, applesauce, banana and drank water all day. Not interested at all in hhb or her balls.
I want to thank everyone for getting us thru a very rough night!

She probably;y associates the boo balls and HHB with coconut oil, so it might be a while before she can stomach them again. Like that first time you get drunk and are so sick after, that you can't stand the smell of what you drank let alone drink it.
Don't beat yourself up about the coconut oil too much. It's more than likely the amount she drank. You said about a teaspoon which would like coming home and drinking 1.5-2 litres of edible oil in one sitting. Don't think you'd be feeling to good for a couple of days.
