My little ones are *about* six weeks old at this point and I had to move them into a bigger cage... they had totally outgrown they're first 18"x18" bird cage and they're now in a 2.5'x2.5'x4'high bird cage with lots of climbing/hiding/exploring gear in it.
My problem is, there isn't anywhere to put the heating pad except INSIDE the cage (and then the wire would be exposed which isn't the least bit safe).
Do you guys think they'll be okay as long as I have lots of fleece for them to hide in, put a fleece throw overtop the cage and change up their sock buddies every couple hours?

6-7 weeks is when I stop using additional heat...:thumbsup
No way should you put the pad inside...they will chew it, they WILL!:D
we are going to need new pics of their new diggs!:poke

That's EXACTLY the response I was looking for! :D
They're also extremely huge for their age. We had a young lady who used to volunteer at a wildlife rehab centre help squirrel-sit last night while we were at a wedding and she was very surprised that they were so big at only 6 weeks. Is it possible they're older and just opened their eyes very late? :thinking I need to get a weight on them... but anyway, being that they're so big my first instinct was that they'd be okay without the extra heat.
I'm going to take a whole whack of new pics tomorrow when my human babies are back at school and I have a few minutes. :jump

I just weighed them and like I suspected, they are absolutely gargantuan!
Barney was the smallest and he's 192 grams and Betty is the biggest at 207 grams and the others two are staggered in between.
I knew northern squirrels were supposed to be bigger but holy smokes! :rotfl Not bad for around 6 weeks old!
