I was riding my bike not even 30 minutes ago, when I came across a freshly dead bird.. I continued riding, and when I made my 2nd lap around the neighborhood the bird was still there, but this time there was a baby bird next to her! This is obviously the babies mom..

I have never taken care of a baby bird before so I'd feel much more comfortable to hand her off to someone with bird experience! If anyone knows anybody who takes in baby birds in the Conroe/Houston area, PLEASE contact me. In the meantime can we work together and figure out how old/what kind of bird this baby is??

Just keep him in a warm quiet area away from ANY animals. I will look for help for you.
Put him in something with a top (like a large cardboard box with a blanket over or a towel over so he can't jump out)
and something to sort of brace him up a little like a shallow
margarine container with lots of kleenex in.

I have kept baby birds many times for a few days before I could get them to a bird rehabber. They do not need to be on heat and they do not eat at night. They have to eat from dawn to dusk every 20 -30 minutes. Do not put a dish of water in the box with them or try to give them water, they could drown. You can feed them dry dog or cat food that has been really soaked in water until it is mush. I hope this helps while your finding a rehabber.

This is info given out by a local org.

If you have found a baby bird, please place it in a hanging basket with a toliet paper nest and hang it in a tree in the shade closest to where you found it. The mother will come and feed it. It is okay if you touched the bird.

I do know that babies leave the nest and mom and dad try to get it to stay in bushes until baby can fly they still feed it. I myself would take it back. :grouphug

Yes, and remember do NOT give it water.

Looks like a baby sparrow. Here is a good diet, have raised many sparrows on this: http://www.avianhaven.org/FoNS_for_2012.pdf Yes, they do not eat at night (although when I was up, I fed them until I went to bed.) Wish I were closer to help, love bb birds. Also sent this to psychobirds.

This is just a short video of a baby robin that I had last year. You will see how they just open their mouth, as a rule....and how easy it would be to place a small piece of the food in there. Try to get it back in his mouth a little, with nothing sharp though.
Still looking for help.

It looks like a blue jay to me - I found one last year - I put it in a box with lots of tissue - took it back to where I found it - put the box in a tree - and the moma blue jay came to it - the baby would cry for its moma - and she came - according to the info - I read on blue jays - they spend a lot of time on the ground - with the moma watching

Good Luck

Nope not a sparrow or a bluejay, I'm leaning towards robin, need to see the tummy to be sure, there is something a little different bout that face though
Anyways species doesn't matter right now
You've gotten great advice so far
One thing to consider is it has 2 parents, so even if one is dead the other parent will need to work double time to care for the babes
Plus he probably has siblings too
Might want to try the basket thing in the morning and watch from a distance pref with binoculars to see if the other parent shows up
Pappy gave u a great diet for now

Oh and the diet for the pigeon is totally different for a songbird
Think animal based protien, And fruit is good to hydrate
Cut up blueberry, small bits of peeled grape, Mellon
Mmmmm, could he be an oriole?
So hard to know from pics, I get mystery birds all the time
Especially naked bbs I have never rehabbed before
Usually figure it out in a few days to a week

It's doing well this morning! I tried the dog food thing and it won't eat! I also tried the basket idea and nothing came for it.. I sat from a distance for about 45 minutes to an hour, I'm not quite sure..

You have to be persistent with trying to feed. Keep going from above like the mom would do. Don't let them see your hand at first just kind of approach from the top if you know what I mean....he HAS to be hungry. Is the food really mushy? How are you attempting to get it into his mouth. Did you get the information from Skull?

I've been trying to feed it every 10 minutes or so.. It's chirping, so it obviously wants something! I did the dog food soaked in water so it's mushy, and I trying to feed it to the bird with chopsticks.. (I don't know what else I could try that isn't sharp)

Is your mother willing to drive someplace if we can find one?

Just a thought, call some vets near you and ask if they know of any wildlife rehabbers around your area.
Tell them your problem and that you don't know what to do.
Sometimes people that work at vets will also rehab wildlife....ask them for help.

That is a little insectivore I think - a swallow, maybe or perhaps a phoebe. Insect food would be greatly appreciated - either mealworms (grab them with tweezers or forcepts and pinch their heads to crush them) or waxworms from a pet store.

Two tricks to get them to gape for food:

Use something like the eraser end of a pencil and tap the beak at the hinge, right where the top and bottom beaks meet in the corners of the mouth. Lots of times that will make them open that beak wide. If he is still being stubborn, reach around from the back of the head and put the pad of your thumb on the beak "hinge" on one side and the pad of the middle finger on the hinge on the other side, then gently press inward on both sides at the same time and the beak will pop open like a chinese puzzle! Once you drop a mealworm or two in there, or even the wet down kibble, they get the hang and will start doing it on their own.

Nancy; Yes my mom is willing to drive, but tonight's her 1 night that she has to work really late.. So I have no one to take me until tomorrow.. I did see the video. I'll call some local vets but I'm not sure they could help because they're all livestock clinics/: Crittermom; I will try those techniques! That is my problem, the little guy won't open its mouth!

yay! btw that lady in the vid is giving the babies WAY too much food at once, watch how the babe has it coming back up, can easily kill them that way
little ones like that i give maybe 0.10-0.20 ml at a time and bounce around giving everybody little bits till they are full

My grandma took me to the rehabber, and as we were talking, the topic of baby squirrels came up! Turns out the organization she works for (Friend Of Texas Wildlife) does summer internships, and I can help out with some baby squirrels this summer!
