I just took in 6 possums from the rehabber that Brian (rescue) posted about having eighty some possums and needing help....... and two of them have green diarrhea, the other four have yet to have a bowl movement.

#1 possum has severe projectile diarrhea and is lethargic with labor breathing.
#2 possum has semi formed green poop with mucus around it.

Question:
Do you think I should continue with the pedialyte hydrate / body flush - then slowly transition over to FV (or)
Do you feel they should be started on medication for poss coccidia?
........ I have some Baytril on hand.

:thankyou

:wave123 as you know carolyn, I am not possie person...
how old are they?
there are some threads going on right now using baycox, I do not think you need a prescription, I know nothing about it..
think it is pyschobird with the general info.
maybe can purchase at feed store.?

I will share what I know to work...
if it's coccdia you need a sulfa based med, SMZ-TMP
if it's giardia, metronidazole is recommended. (flagyl)
green MAY be giardia...very very stinky.

book says all possies coming into rehab, in should be treated with Nystatin or amoxycillan.

sounds like yucky stinky fun:crazy
you are a good soul for helping out...even if you got a mess!:bowdown

Really? that is unusual, she always treats them, it may be the transition to the meds. Keep us up to speed on what is going on.

Thanks to both of the replies....... as Brian stated and talked to me on the phone about....... it might be the meds that are still kicking in or the stress of the drive and coming to a new place...... he is giving the rehabber a call to see what she treated them with --and I will continue with the pedialyte today just to make sure they are well hydrate, then back to fv for dinner.

Ages range from 8 to 10 weeks.

P.S.
3rd possum had a bm and it was perfect......... :multi

I have been unsuccessful to contact her, but it sounds like things are turning around

Thanks for trying Brian........ it looks like it was probably the meds she gave them - as possum #1 is almost to the point of having completely solid poop...... his last bm today was formed (& brown), so it looking really good.
