hi all ive been raising my three girls since they were 2 weeks old. I have had them for 5 weeks now and all of a sudden the one... on friday the 13th Belle became very lethargic and despite my best efforts... she passed away later that day!!!! this is a squirrel who was the runt and never ate much formula, and as i cried for hours i couldnt imagine why after 5 weeks she would die?! Now today... her older sister Jasmine... Is very lethargic, and gasping for air. Im still feeding them formula 3-4 times a day and have been providing rodent block for them daily. Every other day I provide small amount of peeled fruit... apples were yesterday. Anyway, last night they were all jumping around my living room, climbing things.... nothing out of the ordinary. Then I put them to bed and this morning the one who is usually the most active with best appitite was lifeless!!!! barely moving, body limp, and kind of gasping... ?!?!?!?!?!? I grabbed some water put in a bit of sugar and gave her a little bit.... her breathing has become better but baby is still lethargic and not moving much.... !!!! the other babe is jumping around frollicking.... i am afraid to give them any more formula thinking that is the root of the problem??!?! just a week ago i had to buy a new can of powder and thats when all these problems began!!! Should I just provide water?!?!? please help i CANNOT loose another one of my girls!!!!

Help is on the way.
what formular are you using?
is there anything in the cage that might be making them ill?
make sure they stay hydrated

What formula, how much and which block are they getting? Do yo know their weights? Best to post for the best ability to answer questions. Do you have a heat source available to them? If she isn't feeling well a heating pad on ow under half the cage or a rice buddy might be a comfort.

They are gray squirrels. Not gotten into anything, their bedding is soft fabric I got. I dont know their exact weight... Apples peeled and only a small amount, and a small amount of banana. The rodent block is Kaytee FortiDiet Pro Health Mouse, rat, & hamster... I have been using Esbilac puppy formula the powder since I got them and they have been thriving!!

and yes they have a heating pad on half the cage... but im slowly weaning them off the heat. poops are soft and formed... a brownsih color. No diarrhea. I was planning on adding a water bottle to their cage today actually!!! Jasmine seems more alert now, still lethargic, but def better then when i found her this am... maybe her sugar was low!?!?!?? Ive seen that happen with kittens before?!

lethargic???
describe...are they slow?
are they listless, ragdoll, droopy..
hold upright and start hydrating with plain water until we figure out what is wrong..if they can swallow, if not...you needa vet or rehabber unless you have sub Q supplies...start subQing asap if they cannot swallow or hold head up...

have you seen any runny mushy poops?
am I correct in thinking 7-8 weeks old?
can we get a new today pic?

theyre about 7 weeks by my guess of when i got them and info I got off of websites. She was ragdoll this morning but now she is droopy and drunk acting? this am she was like not blinking her eyes just open glazed eyes... now she is closing her eyes while she rests.... def better than this am... i will take pics right now.... she is taking some water... only a bit. the other is scampering around the room like normal... but i dont want to give the other the formula in fear thats what the problem is!!

are you using powder ESbilac or canned?
both need to be in the fridge , even the powder.
Canned should be removed from the can and stored in glass or plastic
needs to be frozen into cubes if you cannot use it in 72 hours...
short shelf life after opening...
never reheat any formula.
never heat fromula in microwave, it cooks nutrients away..
always float a jar of formula in mug of hot water

:thinking thinking out loud

I will not recommend esbilac...
I will not say it is the cause to what is wrong with your sqs either..
I do not believe it kills sqs without first seeing serious complications..
however I would get them on a better formula asap..
FoX Valley is choice.
Someone will come on soon and post how to get it via the web..
until then you should use a gOats milk formula..
If someone can post that too, TY!
I have to run..
hang on someone will help soon with the formula info...:thumbsup

If she can't breathe properly, couldn't she have pneumonia? I'm a newbie, but I thought I'd throw it out there since nobody else had. My little guy had similar symptoms - lethargy, trouble breathing, low appetite, and after a round of Baytril he's a little weaker but active and has a great appetite now.

Also, I just got my FV today - they've been thriving on Esbilac/cream/yogurt for the last 10 days without any issues at all... so as much as FV is better for them, I can't possibly believe that the formula is the problem. There's got to be something else going on...

Good luck and make sure you update!

I know what you are going thru. The esbilic isn't good for them. It has to sit overnight for it to be edible and even then not best. Last year I received three babies about a week old. Smallest I have ever had. They made it to their eyes opening and two died. The baby that survived is now 9 months old and is a small baby. He is my sweetie. Interacts well with my girl who's almost 6 years old. She chases him. I hope your babes survive. They catch your heart right off.

Hope babies are better, you arent using puppy wee wee pads are you, if so take them out. They will kill them all.
7 weeks is kind of young to be running around outside of a cage, they may chew on something they shoudn't or fall . sorry just my opinion.
re-sized for you.

Then came around a little so I gave a small amount of the formula. Just put them 2 bed praying they'll b ok when I wake up tomorrow...thank u all for ur help... and just fyi I only let them out of cage when I feed them one at a time n I let them scamper for a moment or 2 never out of sight

The squirrels in the photo do NOT look like seven week old babies to me. I am very confused by this. Is the picture of different squirrels than the ones being addressed in this thread? They look like much older squirrels in the picture. Stacey

Yeah, "Curliesmom" posted random pics of her squirrels in the thread. :dono

It's "KCB123085" who has the lethargic baby squirrel.

Hey guys... bad news woke up to find her lifeless and barely breathing... and her fur was moist... kinda like sweat or something.. attempted to give water but she couldnts even swallow it... died within an hour.... heartbroken once again...

Ariel her sister is doing fine tho... taking the fox valley with no problems. Bowel movements normal chewing rodent block.... but now I m terrified to feed any fruits or veggies! Since I cannot figure out why after five weeks of thriving the other two passed with exact symptoms?? The only thing I can think of is earlier this week I had to buy a new container of formula... n that's when all of this began... so I m cherishing my memories n hoping my lil Ariel will be ok... its so upsetting and frustrating after five weeks of daily care and love for this to happen...thank. u all for u help... especially u rocky. I truly appreciate it. Will keep everyone posted with updates on Ariel. Xo

Ps no wee wee pads or anything of the sort in the cage... now or ever.

Kristen,
some times there is no explanation as to why.:dono Keep ariel on the fox valley and wait a while to introduce other foods. I hope she will be fine and keep us posted. BTW a photo would be great too:poke
