At the risk of much criticism, I am looking for non conventional release ideas for Butchie and Joey. I thought I had come close to getting a job very recently but I never got a response after going through one interview and one working interview. I can't buy the materials for a cage for them :(. I would love to hear from those who have released other ways, successfully; either here or via PM or email. Adding to the stress is that they no longer get along; I haven't tried having them out together since January.
Weather here has been unseasonably mild; everything is maybe three weeks ahead of schedule. Trees are budding out, fruit trees blooming, seeds on elms, etc. Lows tend to be in the 40s, highs 60s to 70s. I have wondered about taking them out one at a time, or opening a basement window (they are in the basement with me; my parents live upstairs).
Ideas, tips? I love these boys; squirrels tend to do fairly well in this neighborhood; I feed probably a dozen or so total wilds. The boys are used to outside smells to some extent as they have access to one of the windows down here and it is open with a mesh screen over it. They like to take day naps or just look out the window. They also love to pull down the blanket every morning, no matter what the weather :).
Butchie and Joey are fox squirrels, born last year (Joey in January and Butchie in February 2011). They are not blood related brothers but raised up that way. They did well until December when they started fighting every chance they got. I had planned on a divided cage for them; they rotate days in out with one being caged and one getting to run around two of the downstairs rooms. Both got sick in December;it triggered MBD with Butchie. Both boys were treated and diet has been improved, thanks to help from everyone here.
