I know I have heard someone rave about a purple potato that squirrels love.
I saw some at the produce store today, never had seen any before.
I bought one and hope it's the right kind. It was only identified as "purple potato" :rotfl

They are called 'yama' in the Mexican markets and now even in my grocery store. Squirrels LOVE them raw. They are delicious and if you try even a raw chunk you'll love it. (I can't keep my BF from stealing the squirrels' yama chunks:D)

I have been buying some purple potatoes recently but I don't think they are the same as the yama's IR mentioned. What I have been buying is more like a potato than a yam and the flesh is purple as well. Below is a picture I founD of what I have been buying called purple potato.

Just to clarify, I have not fed these purple potatoes to the squirrels! Just to us humans!

Hmmm okay I bought the one Michele is referring to.
It's purple inside.
So I guess I'm eating a purple potato today :D

whoops, sorrreeee! Don't know much about purple potatoes, then! They do look like the ones used for Jet Blue's famous blue potato chips, which are both blue and purple.....:dono:tilt

I wouldn't. Raw white potato has toxic substances - these purples are TRUE potatoes and until I see differently, I would treat them the same. Sweet potatoes are NOT potatoes, despite the name, nor are yams...

You can make some really gnarly looking mashed potatoes with the purples...

No worries, CM...I would not give any potatoes to my kids.
That's why I wanted to double check and just go the one.
I will make myself something interesting with it, hope it tastes good! :D

Edit: I abbreviated for Critter Mom the letters C and M and got a hilarious result above..

Trust me, you're not the only one that's been caught by that. :rofl4

I'll bet those spuds are hoot when they're mashed. :D
Oooo ooo ooo, just a thought.
Next time anybody does white gravy with chicken. Green food color to go with the purple mashed spuds. :jump

The purple potato gets two thumbs up! :thumbsup

I make this cabbage dish that's cooked with potato, carrots and onions.
I threw in the purple dude and was a bit dubious at first,
not really impressed by the look and feel of this strange tuber at first.

Once cooked, it's sweet and has a lovely texture.
It was a nice contrast to the 5 ordinary potatoes in the mix.
