View Full Version : Sandy throwing up

Sandy was quiet today which is extremely unusual for her. We had company over the weekend so I hadn't let her out of her cage at all as I thought it would be too much activity for her. I went up to check on her a couple of hours ago and she had vomited everywhere in her cage. Poor little girl. I let her out to clean out her cage for her and she was subdued but still eating. I gave her a piece of banana with calcium that she nibbled at for a second then hid on the couch. She threw up a few minutes later. I gave her some of her formula as she still likes that now and again, and I thought it would be the best thing for her if she is having trouble keeping food down. I gave her some cheerios, too, as I thought they'd be easy on her stomach....all this is in additon to her Mazuri blocks, broccoli, yellow beans, avocado and blackberry which is regular food for her. She threw up again on her wheel... just a little this time and not all of the formula, fortunately. She's drinking quite a bit, which is good, and it was after she drank a load of water that she threw up on the wheel. The vomiting is not violent at all. She just opens her mouth and out it comes. No retching etc.
The only new thing was newspaper in her cage instead of the usual cedar chips as I heard the cedar chips might not be the best thing for her. Well, she now has the cedar chips back as she has never vomited before. No new toys, nothing.
Does this just happen sometimes? I would think it would be difficult for a squirrel to contract something virus-ey if they have no contact with other squirrels. Could it be the stress of the company combined with the stress of the new bedding?
Suggestions and ideas are most welcome and sincerely appreciated!!!

Could any of your guests have fed her something? If she were mine I would be calling every one of them. Vomitting is an indication of a problem and is not normal.
Push rehydration - water and pedialyte or homemade -
1 teaspoon salt
3 Tablespoons sugar
1 quart water
It will help push whatever is bad out of her. I would hold off on food until she is no longer throwing up.

No one even went upstairs so they wouldn't have had opportunity. My parents brought her some new pinecones from close to their home in Peterborough. They're huge. Can they maybe be too rich?
She's drinking well. That's not an issue. Should I supplement with Pedialyte anyway (or the homemade version)?

So once she had the new pinecones she vomited after those?
You have to keep pushing the hydration to get any toxins out of her body....give her whatever she prefers, the homemade or store bought.
Has she had any new branches or anything, other than the pinecones?
Here is a great link to things that are poisonous and safe for a sugar glider....I know that Sandy is a red, but check this list, if something is on it for a sugar glider, I wouldn't give it to my squirrel, regardless...:shakehead

I'd take the cones out. Maybe something on them, or even mold...

Not specifically. I gave her one Friday night and she was fine. She was fine yesterday, too, and I gave her one earlier today but she didn't eat it. Today was the only day that she's been off, so I'm grasping at anything that might be the cause. No new branches, nothing. All her toys are toys she's had for either weeks or months and I do give her toilet paper rolls to play with, too, but she hasn't had any new ones in a while. It doesn't look like she's thrown anything else up in the last hour or so, so here's hoping whatever did this to her is out of her system. She's peeing and pooping just fine it appears, but I'll be watching that like a hawk as well.
I HATE it when my girl is out of sorts and I HATE not knowing what to do for her! A sick child goes to the doctor, a sick cat or dog goes to the vet, a sick squirrel is an enigma as you can't take them anywhere for fear someone will seize and destroy. You can't buy medicine, there's minimal info online.... Damn!
Thank goodness you guys are here. This is the first place I turned to. :bowdown

I never even thought of the possibility of mold. Would she eat them if they were moldy? With all the rain in the last little while it could be. I didn't notice any but if it's in the nooks and crannys of the cone, I could have missed it!
I'm getting rid of the new ones now, so no one inadvertently feeds them to her. She has others that haven't caused her any problems at all!

You're so right, when these little ones get sick...it's all hit and miss so many times. And even if you have a vet that would see her, there are so few that really know anything about squirrels.
Can you make her a rice buddy. Take a cup of uncooked rice, put it in a sock and tie at the top. Microwave it on high, for one minute. Take it out squish it around so there are no hot spots, and put some fleece around it, put it next to her. A lot of times when they aren't feeling well for whatever reason, warmth feels good to them.:grouphug
Does she have any old stashes in her cage? Has she had any nuts in the shell lately?

I thought of the rice buddy but she's already in her "nest" and last time i gave her a rice buddy when she was in there, it freaked her out. I went up about 20 minutes ago to check on her and she didn't even come out when I opened her cage door, just peeked her head out of the door of her bed. I'll wait until tomorrow to see how she's doing and if she's still off, I'll do just that. Anything that gives her comfort.
I don't think old stashes would be an issue. I completely cleaned out her cage on Thursday after work, switching the bedding for the newspaper, and then cleaned it completely, again, today, switching her back to cedar chips.
I'm really wondering if the pinecones are in fact the problem. I'm such an idiot. Mold didn't even cross my mind!!

Oh, no nuts at all in the last 3 or 4 days. She only gets them once or twice a week as a treat.
