Hey guys,
Babies are doing great. Eating wonderfully, opened their eyes yesterday and growing like weeds. My question comes from seeing some other posts on here regarding squirrels with down syndrome and the "symptoms." I've noticed one of the little females seems to have a much rounder face than the other two and I wanted to know what you thought... And then the question becomes, if so, what do I do? Are they even releasable at that point? Do they require special care? I'll posting pictures below. Tell me what you think and thank you in advance :)

The first few thumbnails are the ones I took tonight... The first one is female 1, then the male, then female 2/possible down's?

I posted your pictures so they can be seen easier. I think you have 3 beautiful healthy baby squirrels....I see no problems. :Love_Icon :Love_Icon :Love_Icon

Do you see what I am talking about with her head shape though? I would be thrilled if she isn't as I love rehabbing, but I just don't know about actually keeping one as a pet :)

Do you mean rounder like this one? I had four from the same mama and they all looked different from their ears to their noses to their head shapes....and they were perfectly normal.

looks normal to me.

in fact, it is easier to notice Down's shape when you look straight in the face, not side: the head shape is usually wider, eyes are set wider, too.

Moreover, since head shapes vary so much (as NIN pointed out), Down's babies should show other symptoms: lack of coordination (not baby kind of clumsiness, but much more prominent), difficulty eating, inability to maintain body temp as they get older, etc etc etc.
If it is Down's, it will be easier to determine that when she gets older.
You can't determine that just by the head shape, especially, because from these pics it looks normal.

Your babies look beautiful and right on track for their age, they even resembled a few baby squirrels I had at their age that had me concerned too, but they turned out fine and was released right on schedule between 4 and 5 months old.

Thank you to everybody who answered. I feel better knowing she is more than likely fine. All 3 of them are growing great, constantly hungry and peeing/pooping right on schedule. It is a little crazy right now between preparing to move and we've decided to go ahead and get married so now I am trying to plan a wedding for April 6th (exactly 3 weeks!), but they are so much fun. It has been a few years since I have done rehabbed anything (about 3 yrs), and I forgot how much I enjoy it (hence why I decided to try and take the rehabbers test). Anyhow I am so glad I found this board and am enjoying getting to know everyone and their squirrly's. Thanks again :)
